Sports – Wednesday, September 9th, 2020
The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers fell to the Lady Red Wings of Eminence Tuesday night at the high school gym in five games as Eminence won the first game, 19-25, then Salem came back to win the second game 25-17. The third game went the way of Eminence by the score of 25-13, but the Salem Lady Tigers battled back to take Game 4, 28-26. Game five was a see-saw contest but a call at the net that went the way of the Lady Red Wings late in the game after the officials conferred on the floor gave them the advantage. The game winner was a beautiful redirect of a pass by senior Aidden Bashman as the Lady Red Wings beat Salem, 14-16. Salem is 0-3 on the year and the Lady Volleyball Tigers will be at West Plains Monday.
A five-run third inning propelled the St. Louis Cardinals to as 6-4 win over the Minnesota Twins in the second game of the double-header Tuesday in St. Louis. Earlier in the day in the first game, Minnesota smacked three home runs in a 7-3 win over the Red Birds. Tommy Edmon homered in the first game for St. Louis who will have the day off today. The Cards will have another double-header Thursday when they host the Detroit Tigers starting at 12:20.
Maikel Franco drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning and had an RBI single in the ninth as Kansas City beat the Cleveland Indians. 8-6 Tuesday night to snap a seven-game losing streak. Whit Merrifield hit a three-run homer and Cam Gallagher had an RBI double for Kansas City in the win. Greg Holland got the win as he worked two perfect innings. The Royals and Indians will play again this evening in Cleveland in the third game iof the four game series.

The Salem Football Tigers lost to the St. Clair Bulldogs Friday night by the score of 45-14. Kaden Coffman scored on a 91-yard run and on an 18-yard pass from Garrett Connell. St. Clair scored 19 points in the 1st quarter rushing and two more touchdowns in the 2nd quarter. Salem is 1-1 on the year and host Houston Friday.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers game at Ava scheduled today has been rescheduled for Monday, September 21st at 4:30.
St. Louis lost 5-1 to Chicago yesterday but won 3 of the 5 games in the series. The Cardinals play Minnesota in a double header today starting at 1:20 on KSMO Radio.
The Kansas City Royals dropped their seventh straight game losing to Cleveland yesterday, 5-2. They will play the Indians again today.

The Salem Football Tigers will be at St. Clair tonight at 7:00 to face the Bulldogs. Each team enters the game with a 1-0 record. Due to COVID restrictions, St. Clair R-XIII Schools has provided Salem R-80 with 250 vouchers for tonight’s football game. After providing players with vouchers for their families, there are a limited number of vouchers remaining. Persons interested in attending the game tonight in St. Clair MUST pick up the vouchers in person at the Salem High School Office from 8:30-11:30 this morning, from 1:00-2:30 this afternoon, or until they run out. There is a limit of two (2) per person. Anyone under the age of 5 does not need a voucher, and vouchers do not replace the cost of admission. The school will not accept phone calls or emails to hold vouchers.
The Cards were off Thursday and will start a five game series in Chicago against the Cubs tonight in a game that will be delayed on KSMO until 9:15.
The Chicago White Sox scored five runs in the 2nd and 7th innings, then held off Kansas City rallies in the 6th and 8th innings to hang on and beat the Royals, 11-6. The Royals and White Sox will continue their four game series tonight.
The Blues traded Jake Allen to Montreal for a 3rd and 7th round draft pick in the NHL 2020 draft.

Joey Votto’s 9th inning single drove in the game winning run as Cincinnati beat St. Louis last night, 4-3. Brad Miller and Yadier Molina homered in the loss for the Red Birds who will have today off.
The Cleveland Indians shutout Kansas City on three hits last night and beat the Royals, 5-0.The Royals will be heading to Chicago to begin a four game series with the White Sox tonight.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers lost their home opening match to the St. James Lady Tigers in three straight games by the scores of 16-25, 18-25 and 17-25. Salem falls to 0-2 on the year and they will be home next Tuesday against the Lady Red Wings of Eminence.
The Cardinals banged out 23 hits Tuesday night as they destroyed the Reds, 16-2 in Cincinnati. Kolten Wong and Brad Miller each had four hits with Miller getting seven RBI in the contest. The Cards and Reds wrap up their series today in Cincinnati at 4:45 on KSMO Radio.
Cleveland had 17 hits and scored ten runs as they dominated the Royals Tuesday night, 10-1. The series finale is tonight in Kansas City between the Royals and the Indians.

Paul DeJong hit a grand slam to back the pitching of Dakota Hudson as he went seven innings and gave up just two runs on four hits as the Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds Monday, 7-5. Paul Goldschmidt went 3-3 and was on base all five times he batted in the game. Giovanny Gallegos got his second save. Kolton Wong, Tommy Edman and DeJong each had two hits for St. Louis who will play the Reds again today at 4:45 on KSMO Radio.
Maikel Franco’s single in the bottom of the 8th inning tied the game before Bubba Starling’s single drove in the winning run as the Kansas City Royals came back to beat Cleveland last night, 2-1 in Kansas City. Scott Barlow got the win and Greg Holland picked up the save.
The Royals will play Cleveland again tonight in Kansas City.

The Salem Football Tigers opened their regular season with a 27-2 win over the St. James Tigers Friday night at the SHS Field. Devin Atchison rushed one-yard for a touchdown and caught a one-yard pass for another, both in the 1st quarter. Kaden Camden ran for a touchdown from four yards out in the 2nd quarter and Bradlee Gover caught a nine-yard pass from Garrett Connell for the 4th Salem score in the 4th quarter. St. James only points came on a bad snap on a punt in the end zone that Connell kicked out of bounds. Camden ran the ball 15 times for 95 yards to lead all rushers while Connell was 8 of 11 passing for 106 yards and two touchdowns. The Tigers will be at St. Clair Friday at 7:00. For those planning to attend the game, St. Clair is using a voucher system to allow entry into the stadium. You will need to contact the high school to find out more information at 729-6641.

The Salem Lady Tiger Softball games this week with St. James and Alton have been postponed. The game with St. James will be made up on October 6th in Salem. No make up date has yet been announced for the game with Alton.
Adam Wainwright pitched a complete game giving up four hits and two runs as the Cardinals stopped their five game losing streak beating Cleveland, 7-2. Dexter Fowler and Dylan Carlson each doubled home two runs and Fowler later added a homer in the game. St. Louis will be at Cincinnati tonight at 4:45 on KSMO Radio.
Luis Robert’s three run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Chicago White Sox a 5-2 win in the rubber game of the three game series. The Royals will be home tonight to face the Cleveland Indians in a three game series.

The Salem Lady Softball game with East carter scheduled for today has been postponed and will be played on Monday, October 12th.
The Pittsburgh Pirates swept a make-up doubleheader in St. Louis Thursday winning in eight innings, 4-3, then shutting out the Cardinals in the nightcap, 2-0. The Cards start a three game series with Cleveland tonight on delayed basis after Salem Football on KSMO at about 9:15. On Saturday, the game will start at 11:20 and on Sunday at 12:20 and both games can be heard on KSMO.
The Royals were off yesterday and they start a three game series with the Chicago White Sox in Chicago on the south side tonight.

Kolton Wong’s bases loaded walk in the bottom of the 9th gave the Cardinals an improbable 6-5 comeback win over Kansas City after St. Louis was down to their last strike trailing 5-2. Tyler O’Neal’s two-run single tied the game after Yadier Molina was hit by a pitch to make it 5-3. St. Louis plays Pittsburgh today in doubleheader starting at 1:20. Kansas City has the day off.

Ryan McBroom’s 8th inning RBI single off John Gant proved to be the difference as Kansas City beat the Cardinals Tuesday night, 5-4. Ryan O’Hearn had three hits including the game tying home run in the 6th inning. Tommy Edmon drove in two runs for St. Louis who will face the Royals tonight at 6:20 on KSMO Radio.
