Sports – Wednesday, February 28th, 2018

The Rolla Bulldogs dominated the Salem Tigers in jumping out to a 23-0 lead after the 1st quarter and extended the lead to 46-9 at halftime en rote to a 72-34 win in the District semi-final game at the Rolla High School Gym. Rolla was led in scoring by Alec Buhr who scored 13 points followed by Davie Pound with 11 and Coby Martin with 10. Nate Bray led all Salem scorers with seven points. The Tigers finished with an overall 8-19 record.

Signups for the Co-Ed Church Softball League are going on now at the Salem Community Center@The Armory at 1200 West Rolla Road through March 23rd. The cost for each team will be $250 and games will be played at the Al Brown Fields starting on Monday, April 2nd. Each team is required to have a minimum of three men or women players on the field at one time. Jontay Porter scored 24 points and seven rebounds, and Jordan Barnett added 17 more points as the Missouri Tigers defeated Vanderbilt Tuesday night by the score of 74-66 to improve to 19-11 on the year and 9-8 in the SEC Conference. The win ended a three game Missouri losing streak. The Tigers will host Arkansas Saturday afternoon at 4:30 on KSMO.

Eric Staal had three goals and two assists to combine with linemates Mikael Granlund and Jason Zucker for 14 points to propel the surging Minnesota Wild to an 8-3 victory on Tuesday over the St. Louis Blues. The Blues will be at Dallas Saturday afternoon at 12:30 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

The St. Louis Cardinals beat Boston Tuesday afternoon, 6-1 to improve to 2-3 in Spring Training. The Cardinals will play Baltimore this afternoon.

The Kansas City Royals outlasted Seattle in wild one in Arizona, 14-9 on Tuesday afternoon. The Royals will face Cincinnati this afternoon. The Royals are 3-0-1 during spring training.

Funeral services for Robert Eugene Cherry of Kevil, Kentucky, age 88, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 1:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Morrison Cemetery in Salem with Full Military Honors.

Funeral services for Jerry Ann Schafer, of Salem, age 84, will be held at 11:30 Saturday morning at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 9:30 until service time. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Green Forest Cemetery.

Memorial services for Paula Jean Koenig, formerly of Rolla, age 90, will be at 1:00 Saturday at the Christ Episcopal Church, Rolla. All arrangements are under the direction of James and Gahr Mortuary of Rolla.

Funeral services for William “Bill” Stark, Sr. of Salem, age 90, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 11:00 Saturday morning until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.

Gary Lee Krewson of Joplin, formerly of Licking, age 74, passed away peacefully with his family in attendance on February 22nd, 2018. Gary was cremated per his request and celebrations of life will be held at a later date, both in Joplin and in Licking.

Stanley Richard “Fred” Vaughn of St. Louis passed away February 27th in Salem at the age of 73. There will be no visitation or service held. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.

Local News – Tuesday, February 27th, 2018

The Dent County Commission met Monday morning for their regular meeting. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated Dent County received between seven and eight inches of rain in the last six days. Crews were out over the weekend to work on making sure roads were passable and open. He said they will be adding materials, patching and grading on Dent County Road 4160 while county road 5525 will get materials and be graded. Other roads to get attention will be county road 6670 that will be graded while county roads 5520, 6250 and 6255 as well as many other roads will receive patch grading. Crews will be out checking on other roads as well to make sure they are drivable. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said his crews were also out over the weekend checking roads for damage. He said materials will be added to Dent County Roads 4010, 4030, 5200 and 5270 and many others as work will be done on those roads to put them back in shape. Dent County Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles will be attending an Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District Executive Board meeting today at St. James, and will also be attending the “Meramec Morning” Wednesday morning starting at 9:00 at the Salem Community Center at the Armory. Interested citizens, local officials, non-profits, businesses, schools and community leaders are encouraged to attend. The MRPC will share some information about the Meramec Regional Planning Commission and ask those attending to share what is happening in your city and county, especially as it relates to economic development. Skiles also wanted to remind everyone to get their 2018 County Assessment forms in by Thursday or be faced with penalties. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said absentee voting for the April 3rd election is continuing in her office and you must have a reason why you are voting early. Also, you must bring in a picture ID to vote. At the last meeting, Dent County Prosecuting Attorney Andrew Curley came in to discuss a Burlington Northern easement request and will get back with the commission after he reviews it. He also discussed the county’s health insurance and the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program. The next meeting of the Dent County Commission will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department has released a report for Friday, February 23rd, deputies responded to a residence on Dent County Road 4170 for a report of stealing. The victim reported that her vehicle was broken into and items were taken from inside. The items taken included checks and $80 worth of coins. This report is still under investigation. The Salem Police Department has released a number of reports. On Friday afternoon, February 16th at approximately 5:45, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 700 block of East Fourth Street in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown took two bicycles valued at $151.49 from the yard of a residence. The report is under investigation. That evening at 6:06, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 1100 block of West Franklin in reference to property damage. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown broke out a bedroom window of the residence that was valued at $80.00. The report is under investigation. On Saturday morning, February 17th at 12:37, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. That investigation led to the arrest of a 26-year old female of Salem for failing to comply with ignition interlock device requirements. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. That evening at 11:19, an officer transported a 76-year old female of Salem to the New Hope Psychiatric Facility in Sullivan on a mental commitment order. An accident happened Sunday morning at 10:45 in Dent County on Highway 68 at Route U. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 Pontiac Sunfire driven eastbound by 16-year old Hailey Corkell of Salem pulled into the path of a 2014 Ford Escape driven southbound by 75-year old Shirley Lyons of Cook Station. Lyons suffered minor injuries and was taken by the Salem Ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Both Corkell and Lyons were wearing seat restraints. The Pontiac was driven from the scene while Ford was towed by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers took the first seed School of the Osage Lady Indians to the brink Monday night at the Rolla High School Gym, before falling by the final score of 58-50. Salem was led by Michaela Chilton who sunk 5 of 7 from the 3-point range and finished with 22 points. Baylee Bilyeu in her final game as a Lady Tiger, scored 17 points. Salem finished with a 12-14 record on the year. Great Job Ladies!!

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will face the Rolla Bulldogs this afternoon 5:00 at the Rolla High School gym in the district semi-final game. You can hear that game on KSMO and online at ksmoradio.com. That game will be aired live on Fidelity Local 6 and Fidelity Local HD 406.

The Missouri Basketball Tigers will be at Vanderbilt tonight with the game starting at 6:00. KSMO Radio will join the game in progress after Salem Tigers basketball. Missouri has lost three straight games and is now 18-11 on the year and 8-8 in the SEC Conference.

The St. Louis Blues have acquired a conditional 1st round pick in 2018, a conditional 4th round pick in 2020 and forward Erik Foley from the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for Paul Stastny.

The St. Louis Blues are mired in a six-game losing streak and they will be Minnesota tonight to face the Wild. That game broadcast will be delayed and can be heard on KSMO at 8:30.

The St. Louis Cardinals lost to the Minnesota Monday, 5-4 to fall to 1-3 in Spring Training. The Cardinals will play Boston this afternoon.

The Kansas City Royals blasted the San Francisco Giants Monday afternoon, 10-4. The Royals will take on Seattle in the desert. The Royals are now 2-0-1 during spring training.

Time is running out if you want to help the Bonebrake Center of Nature and History reach their required goal in their quest to get an endowment match. The Community Foundation of the Ozarks selected the Bonebrake-McMurtrey Foundation to participate in this program that will reward them with $5,000 for their perpetual endowment fund provided the Bonebrake-McMurtrey Foundation Board could raise $10,000 by February 28th. According to Libby Sanders, the board has been able to raise $6,000 of the $10,000 that is required, but they only have until Wednesday to raise the money needed. Sanders said she feels confident the Salem Community will come through, but knows the time is getting close. If you would like to make a contribution or donation so they can reach their goal, please contact the Bonebrake Center. Remember, the Salem Vision 2040 second meeting will be held this evening, February 26th, from 5:00 until 7:00 at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory at 1200 West Rolla Road in Salem. At this meeting, the students from the Center for Community Studies will present a variety of vision sketches based on the information gathered from the first meeting that dealt with community visioning as well as the discussion with those interested in the community that were present. These “What If” ideas are intended to create discussions and broaden the community’s awareness of potential improvements. Come and bring your friends as people of all ages are encouraged to attend and participate in the visioning process for your city.

An accident occurred on Thursday at 5:50 in the evening in Texas County on Highway 32 about 5 miles west of Licking. According to the highway patrol report, a 1998 Mitzubishi Fuso Truck driven by Ryan Nash of Salem traveled off the roadway into a ditch and overcorrected, coming to rest on its side in the roadway. The Mitzubishi sustained moderate damage and was towed by Whitaker’s of Salem. Nash suffered minor injuries and was transported to Phelps County Regional Medical Center by private vehicle. He was wearing a safety restraint at the time of the accident.

Teacher candidates from the Southwest Baptist University campus at Salem recently began their student teaching this semester in area elementary, middle school and high school classrooms. Those student-teachers are: Samantha Callahan, Sara Anderson, Ashlyn Cook, Diana Welch, Meagan Stuckmyer, Megan Hammonds, Mary Ellen Arts, Kayla Hemken, Micheal Fleetwood and Chris James. Baylee Bilyeu scored 18 points including going 8-8 from the free-throw line to help the Salem Lady Tigers beat the Owensville Dutchgirls, 58-43 in the first round of Districts. Michaela Chilton scored 15 points and Madison Woolf added 13 more as the Lady Tigers move to 12-13 on the season. The Lady Tigers will play the School of the Osage Lady Indians this afternoon at 5:00 at the Rolla High School Gym. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com. Senior Lawson Toman scored seven of his 17 points in overtime and blocked a three-point game tying attempt by Owensville’s Trevor Abernathy in the OT to lead the Salem Tigers to a 71-63 win over the Dutchman Saturday afternoon. Cody Rictor and Jordan Shults each netted 12 points for the Tigers and Reese Dodson added 10 more as Salem is now 8-18 on the year and they will take on the Rolla Bulldogs Tuesday at 5:00 at the Rolla High School Gym in the District semi-final. The 2017-2018 Salem Lady Tiger Softball team was second in Class 3 in team Grade Point Average finishing with a 3.839 team GPA. Jefferson City-Helias was first with a team GPA of 3.90. Also, several Lady Softball Tigers were honored individually and qualified for academic All-State honors. Those girls are Malia Terrill, Alyssa Bowers, Trista Heavin, Brooke Adams, Addie Konkel, Taylor Bradshaw and Alexus Woolman. Congratulations Lady Tigers!!!

Kevin Knox had 21 points, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander added 14 and Kentucky made 10 3-pointers and shot 55 percent to blow out Missouri, 88-66 on Saturday night. Kassius Robertson had 26 points including six 3s, and Jordan Barnett had 11 points for Missouri Missouri has lost three straight and is now 18-11 on the year and 8-8 in the SEC Conference. Pekka Rinne made 27 saves for his sixth shutout of the season and the Nashville Predators earned a 4-0 win over the St. Louis Blues on Sunday. St. Louis lost for the sixth straight game. The Blues have been shut out in consecutive games. They will be at Minnesota Tuesday night.
