The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first 3:30 of the 1st quarter over Houston Saturday and cruised to a 70-38 win. Salem was led in scoring by Ashton Bowers with 22 points followed by Savannah Manthey with 13 points and ten more by Bella Jadwin. The Lady Tigers finish the regular season with a 15-9 record and 5-2 in the SCA Conference. The Lady Tigers play the Owensville Dutchgirls tonight in the 1st round of district play at Owensville. That game will begin at 6:00. Admission to the game is $5.00 and debit and credit cards will be accepted to allow for contactless pay. The Houston Tigers beat the Salem Boys Tigers Saturday, 61-49 as Houston went 15-19 from the free throw line in the 4th quarter to break open a tight ball game for over three quarters. Lucas Morrison scored 16 for Salem in the loss. Salem finished the year with a 3-20 record and 1-6 in the SCA Conference. Salem will play Owensville Tuesday night at 6:00 in the district play.

The St. Louis Blues outlasted the San Jose Sharks Saturday night, winning 7-6 as Marco Scandella scored two goals and it was the first time in his career to have a two goal game. The Blues also got goals from Zach Sanford, Sammy Blais, Brayden Schenn, Ryan O’Reilly Mackenzie MacEachern. The win snapped a three game losing streak. The Blues will play the Anaheim Ducks tonight starting at 8:30 on KSMO Radio.

Washington shortstop Jackson Cluff muffed Ivan Hererra’s groundball with two outs in the 9th inning to allow the St. Louis Cardinals to score two runs to tie the Washington Nationals, 4-4. The Cardinals will have today off before they play Miami on Tuesday at noon.

Kansas City came back from a 2-0 first inning deficit to beat the Texas Rangers in six innings Sunday on home runs by Ryan O’Hearn and Salvador Perez, 3-2. The Royals will play the Cleveland Indians this afternoon in Arizona starting at 2:00.

Sports – Friday, February 26th, 2021

Thursday night at the Salem High School, Mountain View-Liberty defeated the Salem Tigers, 81-48. Salem’s leading scorers were Braiden Carmack and Gunner Konkel with 14 points each. Salem is 3-19 on the year and 1-5 in the SCA Conference. The Lady Tigers, who are 14-9 on the year and 4-2 in the SCA Conference, and the Boys Tigers will have make up varsity games with Houston tomorrow afternoon beginning at 1:00 with the girl’s game to be followed by the boy’ s game. For the district games Monday and Tuesday at Owensville, their administration is limiting their gym to a capacity of 1,000 spectators. Each school has been provided 100 vouchers and they will admit an additional 800 spectators that do not have a voucher. Those will distributed on a first come, first serve basis. The administration is asking all those in attendance to wear a mask when moving about the building or when physical distancing can not be maintained. They also are asking spectators to sit in family groups and maintain 6′ distance between groups and they will require any students sitting/standing in the student section to wear a mask. Admission to each district game will be $5.

The Missouri Tiger game Saturday with Texas A&M has been postponed due to COVID-19. Their next game will be Wednesday against Florida at 5:00.

The St. Louis Cardinals begin their spring training season this afternoon against Washington starting at 11:55.

The Salem Tigers snapped their 15-game losing streak as they beat the Mountain Grove Panthers by the score of 68-66. Levi Smith led Salem with 21 points followed by Lucas Morrison with 18 points and 11 rebounds. The Tigers will have another make up game with Mountain View-Liberty tonight and it will be Homecoming. The St. Louis Blues dropped their third straight game as they lost to the Los Angeles Kings Wednesday night, 2-1. Oskar Sunqvist scored the only Blues goal. The Blues will be at San Jose Saturday night to face the Sharks starting at 9:00. You can hear the game on KSMO.

The Salem Lady Tigers beat the Cuba Lady Wildcats in a makeup game Tuesday, 60-50. The Lady Tigers will host Houston Saturday at 1:00 in a makeup game for their final regular season game. The Lady Tigers are 14-9 on the year and 4-2 in the SCA Conference.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will have a make up game with Mountain Grove tonight and it will be Senior Night. The JV will play at 6:00 followed by the varsity contest. The Ole Miss Rebels held off a late Missouri surge to hang on and beat the Tigers Tuesday, 60-53. Kobe Brown had 12 points to lead Missouri who falls to 14-6 overall and 7-6 in the SEC. The Tigers are scheduled to play Texas A&M Saturday afternoon at 4:30, but the Aggies are in the process of contact tracing after a COVID outbreak and the playing of the game is in question.

The St. Louis Blues will host the LA Kings tonight at 8:30 and try to break their two game losing streak. KSMO will join that game in progress after Salem Tiger Basketball.

Sports – Tuesday, February 23rd, 2021

Ava jumped out to a 21-5 1st quarter lead and cruised past the Lady Tigers Monday night, 72-43. Ashton Bowers led Salem with 12 points followed by Savannah Manthey with 11 more. Salem drops to 13-9 on the year and they will play today at 4:30 at Cuba against the Lady Wildcats in a varsity only game. Salem dropped to 4-2 in the SCA.

Salem scored only 2 points in the 1st quarter while the Ava Bears netted 19 in that quarter in their win over Salem Monday night, 72-46. Levi Smith led Salem with 11 points as the Tigers fall to 2-18 on the year and 0-4 in the conference. The boys will have a make up game with Mountain Grove Wednesday night at 6:00 starting with the JV contest followed by the varsity game.

Athletic Director Phillip Karr has indicated the SCA Conference basketball games with Houston will be made up this Saturday afternoon with the Lady Tigers game at 1:00 followed by the varsity boy’s game at about 2:30.

The Missouri Basketball Tigers will play Ole Miss tonight at 7:30 at the Mizzou Arena. Missouri enters the game with a 14-5 overall and 7-5 in the SEC. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Johnathan Quick earned his 54th career shutout Monday night as the Los Angeles Kings blanked the injury riddled Sty. Louis Blues, 3-0. The Blues will face the LA Kings Wednesday night at 8:30. KSMO will join that game in progress after Salem Tiger Basketball.

Kasey Richards scored 19 pints for Licking Friday night leading the Lady Wildcats to a 56-37 win over Salem at Licking. Anna Sullins scored 11 and Kiley Ingram added 10 more as the Lady Wildcats improved to 18-8 on the year. Salem was led by Bella Jadwin with 14 points followed by Ashton Bowers with 12. Salem falls to 13-8 on the year and they will play today at 5:00 at Ava in a key SCA contest. Salem is 4-1 in the SCA and Ava is 5-1 in the conference and 16-5 on the year. The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers dropped a 57-45 decision to Bunker Friday afternoon in non-conference play. Salem falls to 2-17 on the year and they will be at Ava tonight to face the Bears in SCA play. Salem is 0-3 in the conference. They have makeup games with Mountain Grove on Wednesday which is Senior Night, and Mountain View-Liberty on Thursday which is Homecoming.

The Missouri Basketball Tigers snapped their three-game losing streak with a convincing 93-78 win over South Carolina Saturday. Dru Smith and Jeremiah Tilmon each scored 17 for the Tigers who had five players in double figures. The Tigers are 14-5 overall and 7-5 in the SEC. They will play Ole Miss Tuesday night.

Logan Couture’s 3rd period goal with 7:52 left proved to be the winner as San Jose beat St. Louis, 5-4 after the Blues rallied with four 2nd period goals to tie the game, 4-4. Zach Sanford, Ryan O’Reilly, Brayden Schenn and Jordan Kyrou all scored for the Blues who will face the LA Kings tonight at 7:00. In a last minute schedule change, the Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will be in Licking tonight to face the Lady Wildcats in a varsity only game at 7:00. The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers with Houston tonight has been postponed and no makeup date has been set. Instead, the Tigers will travel to Bunker this afternoon. The JV game will begin at 4:00 with the varsity game to follow. Salem is 2-16 on the year and is 0-3 in the SCA Conference. KSMO will not broadcast the boy’s game today as they will be in Licking to broadcast the Lady Tigers game tonight.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers and the Boys Basketball Tigers are both seeded 5th in the upcoming Class 4, District 9 tournament. The Tiger teams will each face Owensville in the first round of district play. Both games are scheduled to be at Owensville starting at 6:00 for the girls on Monday, March 1st and 6:00 for the boys on Tuesday, March 2nd. Those games can each be heard on KSMO Radio.

David Perron scored on a power play in overtime after Brayden Schenn tied the game with 32 seconds left as the St. Louis Blues beat the San Jose Sharks, 3-2. Mike Hoffman also scored on the power play for St. Louis. The Blues and Sharks will play Saturday night at 7:00. You can hear that game on KSMO at 6:30.

The Salem Boys Basketball makeup game with Mountain-View Liberty last night was postponed. The game will be made up on Thursday, February 25th. The boy’s game with Ava that was scheduled for tonight has been rescheduled for Monday, February 22nd. The girl’s varsity game will be held Monday night at 6:00 and the boy’s varsity game will follow. The Salem Girls are scheduled to play Houston Thursday night at the SHS gym in SCA Conference play.

The St. Louis Blues finished up their seventh consecutive game against the Arizona Coyotes with a 1-0 loss as Darcy Kuemper earned his 19th career shutout. St. Louis native Clayton Keller scored the only goal of the game. The Blues will be off until Thursday when they host the San Jose Sharks at 7:00.
