Sports – Monday, February 11th, 2019

The Salem Lady Tigers beat Viburnum Thursday night, 71-24 after outscoring the Lady Jays, 21-4 in the first quarter that set the tone for the rest of the night. Five Lady Tigers were in double figures for the game. Michaela Chilton and Taylor Norris led the way with 13 points followed by Bella Jadwin with 12 points, Madison Woolf netted 11 points and Tatum Hatridge finished with 10 points. Salem is 14-9 on the year and they will host Houston tonight in SCA play starting at 6:00 with the JV game followed by the varsity game.

The Salem Basketball Tigers played three strong quarters at Ava and led 60-53 before the Bears outscored Salem in the 4th quarter by a 25-8 margin to beat the Tigers, 78-68. Salem was led by Jordan Shults with 26 points while Reese Dotson had 14 points and Dawson Conway netted 10 more. Salem has now lost six straight games and are now 5-16 on the year and 0-4 in the SCA Conference. They will be at Willow Springs tonight in a makeup game starting at 6:00 with the JV game followed by the varsity contest at about 7:15 on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com.

Vladimir Tarasenko completed a hat trick by scoring 16 seconds into overtime, and the St. Louis Blues held off the Nashville Predators 5-4 on Sunday, stretching their winning streak to a season-best six games, sweeping the home and home series. Alex Pietrangelo and Tyler Bozak each scored a goal. Ryan O’Reilly and Jay Bouwmeester had two assists apiece for the Blues. Jake Allen made 40 saves in his first appearance since January 17th as the Blues took their second game in as many days from Nashville, following up a 3-2 win in St. Louis on Saturday where rookie Mackenzie MacEachern got the came winning goal. Vince Dunn and Tarasenko scored for the Blues who are now in the 1st wild card playoff spot. They will host New Jersey Tuesday night.

Wendell Mitchell scored 20 points to help Texas A&M erase a 12-point, second-half deficit and beat Missouri 68-59 on Saturday. Javon Pickett led Missouri with 15 points, and Torrence Watson and Jordan Geist each scored 12. Missouri is now 11-11 on the year and 2-8 in the SEC Conference. They will play Arkansas Tuesday night.

Funeral Mass for Fern “Alline” Finocchiaro of Steelville, age 96, will be this morning at 11:00 at St. Michael Catholic Church in Steelville. The family chose cremation as the final disposition. Funeral services for Cleda L. Shultz of Rolla, age 88, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary Rolla Chapel. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Ozark Cemetery in Houston, Missouri. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Fern McClure Goodwin, of Springfield, age 82, passed away February 9. Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at Fox Funeral Home. Interment will be at Licking Cemetery.

Martha Maddox of Licking, age 62, passed away February 9. Funeral service will be Thursday at 1:00 at Fox Chapel. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 6:00 until 8:00. Interment will be at Licking Cemetery.

Funeral services for Rev. James Donivan Walker of Salem, age 90, will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 at the Lighthouse Assembly Church of Salem. Visitation will held Saturday from noon until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.

The Ozark National Scenic Riverways will soon replace several deteriorating or flood-damaged restroom facilities at various locations in the park. New vault toilets will be installed at Rocky Falls, Shawnee Creek Campground, Buck Hollow Access, and Rymers Access. New water-borne restrooms will be installed in the 200 Loop of the Big Spring Campground and the 400 Loop of the Alley Spring Campground. The new restroom facilities are all constructed of cast concrete and designed for use in flood zones. The existing outdated vault toilets at Buck Hollow, Rymers and Rocky Falls are in very poor condition and were already a high priority to be replaced prior to the 2017 flood. They are scheduled for demolition beginning the week of February 11. Once demolition begins, there will be no restrooms available at those locations until the new facilities are installed. Installation is expected to occur from late February to early March. The new vault toilet at Shawnee Creek Campground will also be installed at that time. Currently, there is no restroom at Shawnee Creek because the previous restroom was destroyed in the 2017 flood. Installation of new water-borne restroom facilities in the Big Spring 200 Loop and Alley Spring 400 Loop is scheduled to occur in late March. The previous restrooms in those locations were destroyed during the 2017 flood. Installation is expected to take approximately one week. Landscaping and construction of sidewalks will occur after facility installation, and is expected to be finished prior to April 15. There will be a Community Blood Center of the Ozarks Blood Drive today at Salem Wood Products off Highway 19 North at 200 Stave Mill Road. The blood drive will be held from 11:00 in the morning until 5:00 in the afternoon. Blood reserves are needed for all “O” and “B” type blood and also “A” negative. You must weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health and bring a picture ID to donate blood.

Jason Stotler will be the guest speaker for the Dent County Historical Society dinner speaker series Tuesday night at 6:00 at the Salem Pizza Inn meeting room. Stotler will tell the story “Death of a Champion,” which is the story of the former Missouri State Champion Short Leaf Pine Tree that once stood in Dent County with bald eagles nesting in its crown. The Salem Lady Tigers traveled to Viburnum to face the Lady Blue Jays on Thursday night. A dominant 21-4 first quarter from Salem would set the the tone for the rest of the night as the Lady Tigers went on to win by the final score of 71-24. They are 14-9 on the year and play Houston Monday night .

TODAY is the last day to enroll in the “Start Smart Soccer Program” at the Salem Community Center@The Armory. The “Start Smart Soccer Program” is a developmentally appropriate introductory soccer program for children from 3 to 5 years of age. The “Start Smart Soccer Program” prepares children and their parents for organized soccer without the threat of competition or the fear of getting hurt. Age appropriate equipment from Franklin Sports and Kwik Goal will be used in teaching kicking, dribbling, trapping, throw-ins and helping the child with their agility. A parent or other adult must be able to attend the six, one-hour sessions with the children. The “Start Smart Soccer Program” will begin March 5th at the Salem Community Center@the Armory at 6:00 in the evening. The cost of the program is $55 and those who sign their children up for the program will receive two soccer balls, four practices cones, a shirt and shin guards. Registration forms for this program are only available at the Salem Community Center@The Armory during normal business hours from 8:00 in the morning until 4:30 in the afternoon. The Missouri Basketball Tigers will host Texas A&M this Saturday afternoon at 4:30. Missouri is 11-10 on the year and 2-7 in the SEC Conference. The game can be heard on KSMO.

Brayden Schenn scored with 59 seconds left in overtime as the St. Louis Blues shutout the Tampa Bay Lightning Thursday, 1-0. Jordan Binnington stopped 32 shots for the shutout. The St. Louis Blues return home tomorrow for the home part of home and home series with the Nashville Predators. The game Saturday will begin at 1:00 while the game on Sunday will be held at 11:30 in Nashville. You can hear both games on KSMO Radio starting at 12:30 with the pre-game show on Saturday with the game only broadcast on Sunday starting at 11:30.

Local News – Thursday, February 7th, 2019

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors met Tuesday evening at the Dent County Fire House. After approval of the consent agenda, the bills for the month of January were reviewed and approved. The budget was also reviewed and it showed the general revenue balance at the end of January of $246,294.72. Fire Chief Brad Nash reported the University of Missouri will hold an Alternative Fuel Vehicle Response class at the fire station with all local fire departments invited to participate. The monthly reimbursement report was presented with a total of 21 calls for the month bringing the year to date total of calls to 36. Fire Chief Nash informed the board all the new heaters had been installed and are now operational. Nash said the heating project is now completed. The next meeting of the Dent County Fire Protection Board of Directors will be held on Tuesday, March 5th at the Dent County Fire House.

The City of Salem and Dent County Economic Development Director Sally Burbridge released her monthly report for the month of January. In her report concerning new economic prospects, an aerospace and food manufacturing business showed interested in Dent County, but the current available space in Salem and Dent County did not match these industries requirements. A couple other prospects were provided with green space properties to see if they meet their needs. Burbridge showed there were two leads for starting a business or locating a building in Salem along with her working with a local company to possibly expand their business. Burbridge said there were a couple of projects that were still active and she continues to work on them. She reported Salem and Dent County now has 14 buildings and 14 land sites listed on the LOIS listings. Burbridge reported on the new City of Salem Facebook Page that was launched on January 22nd. The page will be used to provide daily messages, alerts and reminders along with other pertinent city news. Burbridge is working on an Economic Development Strategic Plan and has developed four chapters. Four more chapters will be worked on at the February workshop that will be held on Thursday, February 28th at 5:30 at a location to be determined. Burbridge continues to attend community functions and other meetings in her efforts to collect local data to be used in creating strategic plans. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) invite Missouri public, private, and home-school students in grades K-8 to help fight litter in the Show-Me State -- and to have creative and educational fun -- by participating in the 2019 "Yes You CAN Make Missouri Litter-Free" trashcan-decorating contest. The annual contest is sponsored by MDC and MoDOT as part of the state's "No MOre Trash!" statewide litter campaign. Schools may submit one entry in each competition category: K-2, 3-5, and 6-8. Entries are judged based on creativity, adherence to contest rules, and effective use of theme and logo. First-place winners from each competition category receive $200 awarded to the sponsoring schools. All first-place winners are then eligible for a grand prize of a trophy and $600 awarded to the sponsoring school. There is no entry fee for the contest. Participating school groups must submit a completed entry form online with up to three photos to nomoretrash.org by Friday, March 15. The City of Salem Youth Soccer League will begin April 1st at Al Brown Park at the multipurpose field for boys and girls ages 14 and under. Regular registration for the program will end THIS FRIDAY at the Salem Community Center at the Armory at 1200 West Rolla Road. The cost is $25 per child. The Healthy Dent County Fitness Center will continue to hold line dancing classes through February Thursday nights from 6:30 to 7:30 and that includes tonight! Everyone is invited to attend! The St. Louis Blues wrap up their five game road trip tonight when they face the Tampa Bay Lightning starting at 6:00 on KSMO Radio. The Blues are 3-1 on this road trip and have won their last three games in a row. They are just one point out of a playoff spot.
