The Salem Board of Aldermen met Monday night at the City Hall Council Chambers. At the meeting, the board discussed bids for an excavator for the cemetery. After a discussion about a Kubota and a John Deere Bobcat, the board postponed making a decision until they can find out if they could lease a machine for three months on a trial basis. The board did approve the bid from Heavin Motors to replace the 5.4 liter engine and transmission in a 2006 F-250 truck for $6,183.56, and approved the bid for a Zero Turn Mower from Heritage Tractor in Rolla for $7,493.73. Both of the items were for the Water and Sewer Department. For the police department, the board approved the purchase of a 2018 Dodge Charger from Lou Fusz Ford for the state bid of $23,638.00 that will replace a 2014 Dodge Charger with 49,500 miles; and they approved the purchase of a 2019 Ford Explorer from Dave Sinclair Ford for $29,554 that will replace a 2010 Ford Explorer with 68,500 miles. No bids were received for a Zero Turn Mower for the Park and Recreation Department and that will be rebid, while the board did approve the bid from Flight Light, Inc. for a new rotating beacon at the airport for $3,978.00. The board also discussed the purchase of light and heavy duty truck diagnostic scanning tools for the city shop. After a long discussion, the board approved the motion to go with the NAPA Auto Parts bid of $4,869.00 with the contingency that they demonstrate the tool in the near future to show that it meets the needs of the city. Code Enforcement Officer Jared Brown explained the nuisance procedures that have to be done before action can be taken on a person’s property and he recommends that an Administrative Fee be added for nuisance abatements. City Attorney William Camm Seay said that may not be legal and that will have to be discussed when the ordinances are to be updated to see if it is possible. City Administrator Ray Walden said the Salem Community Center@The Armory had 5,790 persons utilizing their services in July, and a Visioning Tool Kit that came from the Drury University students will be reviewed by a follow-up committee at a meeting to determine if some recommendations from the Visioning sessions need to be brought back before the board. Walden also said the roof project has been completed on the City Hall Auditorium and the Auditorium Committee will be meeting to discuss ceiling options. Mayor Brad Nash asked Parks and Recreation Director Tye Lydon about the tennis court lights and Lydon told him they had been repaired along with a dusk-to-dawn light at the basketball court. The board approved Resolution 3-2018 that adopted the Dent County Multi-Jurisdictional Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan, approved Bill #3995 to vacate an undeveloped portion of South Oak Street between East Hunt Street and East Franklin Avenue, and approved Bill #3996 to approve the re-subdivision of the city property at 400, 402, 500 and 502 North Water Street. The board approved changing the meeting dates in September to accommodate the Missouri Municipal League meeting in the middle of the month as well as the Labor Day Holiday. The only meeting in September will be on Monday, the 10th at 7:00 with the next meeting on Monday, October 1st. The board then went into closed session to discuss personnel.
The Salem Police Department has released the following reports for July 28th through 30th. On Saturday morning the 28th at approximately 12:40, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 1100 block of West Franklin Street in reference to a stolen animal. The Investigation Of the report revealed a black and white pit bull valued at $50.00 was taken from the residence. The report is under investigation. Just a few minutes later at approximately 12:56, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. This investigation led to the arrest of a 36-year old male of Salem for possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. The suspect was incarcerated pending a warrant application. On Sunday, July 29th at approximately 8:00 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 200 block of Independence Drive in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed a person or persons unknown took plants, yard ornaments and lights valued at $75.00. The report is under investigation. On Monday the 30th at approximately 2:03 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 500 block of South Washington Street in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed a person or persons unknown took tools valued at $400.00 from the back of a truck. The report is under investigation. That same night at approximately 8:10, an officer was dispatched to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 23-year old male of Cuba, Missouri for stealing merchandise valued at $100.15. The suspect was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Matt Carpenter hit a tiebreaking homer for the second consecutive night, and the St. Louis Cardinals won their fourth series in a row Wednesday by beating Miami, 7-1. John Gant (4-4) pitched six innings and allowed one run and Cardinal pitching shut down 21 consecutive Marlins. Yadier Molina homered and drove in three runs in the game. The Cardinals will have today off before they begin a series with the Royals this weekend starting Friday night.
Royals’ hurler Heath Fillmyer held the Chicago Cubs to just three hits over seven innings, and Adalberto Mondesi homered and drove in three runs as the Kansas City Royals pounded the Cubs, 9-0 to salvage the final game of the three game series. The Royals will be off today before starting the series with the Cardinals Friday night at Kaufmann Stadium.

A Primary Election was held Tuesday to determine who will run for offices for their respective parties in the November General Election. In some cases, the election determined who will take office in January. Those offices include the Dent County Presiding Commissioner race, Public Administrator race and Dent County Collector race. A total of 4,022 votes were cast which is 40.65% of the registered voters. Only the contested races are presented and the results presented are unofficial.

Chris McElvy, Dent County Sheriff’s Office Jail Administrator, was named 2018 Jail Administrator of the Year at the annual jail administrators’ conference held recently. McElvy was nominated by Dent County Sheriff Bob Wells. She has been in the Jail Administrator since January of 2017. McElvy’s law enforcement career began in Perry County in 1998.

Registration for the City of Salem Youth Flag Football Program for 1st through 6th graders is going on now through August 24th at the Salem Community Center @ The Armory during regular business hours. There is a $25.00 registration fee per child during regular registration. Games will be played Saturdays starting on September 29th and going through October 20th. A Summers’ End Kids Free Fishing Day will be held this Saturday at Montauk State Park. Fishing tags are free for children ages 15 and under on this day only to fish in Montauk State Park. Kids must wear a children’s free fishing tag that can be picked up at the lodge on Friday evening after 7 p.m. or anytime on Saturday. The tags are required for kids fishing on this day. Kids can fish anywhere inside the park; no designated fishing area will be set aside. Adults must have daily trout tag to assist children fishing. For more information, call (573) 548-2201.
Streaking Matt Carpenter, who just won his second Player of the Week Award for last week, hit his 30th home run, a tiebreaking drive in the eighth inning that lifted the St. Louis Cardinals over the Miami Marlins 3-2 on Tuesday night. Carpenter connected for the fourth time in five games and increased his career high for home runs. He also extended his streak of reaching base safely to 26 games, the longest active string in the majors. Paul DeJong hit a tying, two-run homer in the seventh for the Cardinals and Miles Mikolas (12-3) pitched seven innings, allowing two runs and five hits. The Cardinals go for their fourth straight series win starting at 5:15 tonight on KSMO Radio.
Mike Montgomery allowed five hits over six-plus innings, David Bote drove in a career-high three runs and the Chicago Cubs beat the Kansas City Royals 5-0 Tuesday night. The Royals have lost six straight and are 14-43 since May 30th. The Cubs and Royals finish up their series tonight.

The Dent County Commissioners met Monday morning at the courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said it was too dry to grade in his district so brush will be cut on Dent County Roads 2400, 2410, 4110 and 4120. He stated materials would be added to county road 6610 and a man would be going to Springfield to get oil for chip and seal repair. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said materials would be added and grading done on Dent County Roads 4370 and 5300 while only grading would be done on county road 5290. He indicated brush would be cut on county road 4430 and a man was going to Jefferson City to get parts for a backhoe. The backhoe has a blown hose and the wrong hose was sent to the shop for the repair. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended the CCAM board meeting held at Echo Bluff State Park last Tuesday through Thursday to plan for the annual training in February. He said about 45 commissioners were there and some even brought their families to enjoy the new facility. Skiles said it was one of the best meetings they have ever had and the service was excellent. Skiles also wanted to remind everyone that it is very dry and please be very careful with any type of burning. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said the polls would be open from 6:00 this morning until 7:00 tonight for the Primary election. People will need to bring with them a photo ID to vote. She is also reminding everyone that no electioneering can be done within 25 feet of the polls. Curley also stated she balanced with the collector and assessor on all collections, abatements and add-ons for the month of July which was approved by the commissioners. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
The Dent County Sheriff's office has released some reports. On Saturday, July 27th, deputies responded to a residence on Dent County Road 5120 for a report of a domestic disturbance. It was reported that a 23-year old Salem man had pushed his father-in-law to the ground. He was arrested for Domestic Assault in the 4th Degree, fingerprinted, issued and summons, and released. On Tuesday, July 31st, deputies received a report of someone using movie prop money to purchase items from other individuals. After an investigation, a 19-year old Salem man was arrested for stealing, was fingerprinted, issued a summons, and released. Later that day, deputies conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of Highways 19 and 32. A “consent to search” the vehicle was granted and pills and methamphetamine were located. As a result, a 40-year old female from Pilot Knob was arrested and taken to the Dent County Jail. On Wednesday, August 1st, deputies traveled to a residence in the 3000 block of Route OO to serve an arrest warrant. A 23-year old Salem man with a felony Laclede County warrant was located and arrested. He was taken to the Dent County Jail. Later that same day, deputies responded to the 3000 block of Highway 119 in reference to a domestic disturbance. After an investigation, a 52-year old Salem man was found to be in possession of a baggie of methamphetamine. He was arrested and taken to the Dent County Jail.
