Matt Carpenter hit a tiebreaking homer for the second consecutive night, and the St. Louis Cardinals won their fourth series in a row Wednesday by beating Miami, 7-1. John Gant (4-4) pitched six innings and allowed one run and Cardinal pitching shut down 21 consecutive Marlins. Yadier Molina homered and drove in three runs in the game. The Cardinals will have today off before they begin a series with the Royals this weekend starting Friday night.

Royals’ hurler Heath Fillmyer held the Chicago Cubs to just three hits over seven innings, and Adalberto Mondesi homered and drove in three runs as the Kansas City Royals pounded the Cubs, 9-0 to salvage the final game of the three game series. The Royals will be off today before starting the series with the Cardinals Friday night at Kaufmann Stadium.
