Los Angeles rookie goalie Calvin Peterson earned his first NHL shutout and rookie forward Matt Luff scored his first goal, leading the Kings to a 2-0 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Monday night.

Jordan Geist scored 18 of his season-high 21 points in the second half, and the Missouri Tigers used a late run to pull away from Oregon State 69-63 Sunday in the semifinals of the Paradise Jam tournament. Kevin Puryear added 17 points for the Tigers (3-1), who advanced to Monday night's championship game at the University of the Virgin Islands Sports and Fitness Center.

Jared Goff threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Gerald Everett for the go-ahead score with 1:49 to play, and the Los Angeles Rams outlasted the Kansas City Chiefs for a 54-51 victory on Monday night in a high-octane NFL offensive showdown that somehow surpassed the hype.

Local News – Tuesday, November 20th, 2018

An accident happened Sunday morning at 9:12 on Highway O, four miles south of Rolla that took the lives of two Dent County men and two Phelps County men. According to the Highway Patrol report the accident occurred as a southbound 1994 Chevrolet Cavalier, driven by 22 year-old Alonzo C. Moore of Rolla, traveled into the path of a northbound 2015 Nissan Titan, driven by 42 year-old Andrew Knehans of Rolla, where the Chevrolet struck the Nissan. Pronounced deceased at the scene were Alonzo C. Moore along with passengers Andrew T. Theiss of Rolla, Logan K. Barton of Salem and Zachary J. Barton of Salem. Andrew Knehans suffered moderate injuries, while passengers 43 year-old Lainie Knehans suffered serious injuries, 6 year-old Parker Knehans suffered minor injuries and 10 year-old Sophia Knehans also suffered minor injuries. The Knehans were transported by EMS to Phelps County Regional Medical Center. The bodies of Logan and Zachary Barton were transported to James and Gahr Mortuary, while the bodies of Alonzo Moore and Andrew Theiss were transported to Null and Son Funeral Home. The report stated that none of the occupants of the Chevrolet Cavalier were wearing safety restraints at the time of the accident. It also stated that all of the Knehans were wearing safety restraints. The Chevrolet Cavalier was totaled, while the Nissan Titan sustained extensive damage. Both vehicles were removed by C & C Towing. The Highway Patrol was assisted by the Phelps County Sheriff’s Department, Phelps County EMS, and the Rolla Rural Fire Department.

The Salem R-80 Board of education held their regular monthly meeting Thursday, November 15 at 6:00 p.m. After a motion to approve the agenda and consent agenda the board heard from Superintendent John McColloch. McColloch reported on Parent/Teachers conferences and also gave a report on the current construction projects. He reported that the masons have started on the walls of the football field bathrooms and that the HVAC units for the gym are scheduled to be delivered on December 2nd. Both of those projects should be completed by the end of the first semester. McColloch also gave an update regarding the long range facility plan. FFA students Jodie Dean, Nathan Williams, Taylor Smith, Emma Southards, Cecelia Reed, and Easton Ingram gave a report detailing their recent trip to the 91st FFA National Convention. The principals reports was then heard by the board. A motion was then made to approve the auditors report as well as a motion to set board election filing dates for December 11th, 2018 through January 15th, 2019. A motion was then made to move into executive session at 7 p.m. for the purpose of discussing personnel issues.

Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley announced that a Phelps County Grand Jury indicted attorney Brant Shockley with 18 counts involving sexual assaults of four different women. The charged criminal conduct dates back to 2014 and occurred at the Defendant’s home and offices in Phelps County. Shockley was taken into custody Friday. This case is being investigated by the Rolla Police Department, with assistance from the Phelps County Sheriff’s Department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The Attorney General’s Office is prosecuting the case and was appointed special prosecutor because of a conflict at the request of the Phelps County Prosecuting Attorney. The Attorney General and the Rolla Police Department encourage anyone with additional information regarding Mr. Shockley or this case to contact Michael Boll at the Missouri Attorney General’s Office at (573) 644-3068 or Detective Adam Meyer at the Rolla Police Department at (573) 308-1213. Attorney General Hawley reminds the public that the charges against Shockley are allegations and, as in all criminal cases, the defendant is presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty in a court of law.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers open their regular season as they host Plato tonight at the Salem High School Gym. The JV game will begin at 6:00 with the varsity game to follow at 7:15 at the high school gym.

The Missouri Basketball Tigers defeated Kennesaw State Friday. Kevin Puryear scored 17 points, and Missouri pulled ahead in the final two minutes to beat Kennesaw State 55-52 at the Paradise Jam tournament.

The St. Louis Blues defeated the Las Vegas Golden Knights Friday night 4 to 1, then lost Saturday night to the San Jose Sharks by a final score of 4 to 0. The Blues will be at home tonight against the LA Kings.

Missouri Football Tigers defeated Tennessee on Saturday. Drew Lock threw two touchdown passes and Larry Rountree rushed for 135 yards Saturday as Missouri trounced Tennessee 50-17 for its third straight victory. Lock went 21 of 30 for 257 yards and moved into second place on the Southeastern Conference’s career passing yardage list.

The Kansas City Chiefs will take on the LA Rams in Monday night Football tonight. This is a match up of the only two teams in the NFL with 9-1 records.

According to a release form the Dent County Prosecutors office, Judge Kelly Parker presided over the sentencing hearing in Crawford County Thursday of Blake Harrison. Harrison previously had pled guilty to statutory rape in the First degree. Prosecutor Andrew Curley sought 18 years in the Department of Corrections due to the nature of the offense and the age of the victim which was four at the time of the incident. Defense Counsel Chad Picker requested probation as opposed to incarceration due to the defendant’s age at time of offense, which was 17-years of age, as well as at sentencing. At the conclusion of the hearing, the defendant was ordered to serve 15 years in the Department of Corrections and will likely serve at least 74% of his sentence before eligible for parole release.

With the holiday season upon us, people will see the familiar red kettles of the local Dent County Service Unit of the Salvation Army. The famous red kettles will be located at Country Mart, Dollar General and Wal-Mart starting this Wednesday before Thanksgiving, then every Friday and Saturday until Christmas Eve. People will also find numerous counter kettles that are located at various locations throughout the community. The kettles are the primary way that funds are raised to continue to meeting the needs of the less fortunate in our community. Volunteer bell ringers are needed each year to help raise funds. The Salvation Army will continue its dedication to doing the most good not only during the holiday season, but year round. Dent County Service Unit Chairman, Stan Podorski thanks all those who ring the bell for their time this holiday season, and praises everyone for their contributions over the years to help those less fortunate in Dent County. The work done by the Salvation Army could not be accomplished without the generosity of the citizens of Dent County. This year’s goal is $30,000 which will be used throughout the year for those in need. In addition to the red kettles, the Salvation Army is again partnering with Wal-Mart to host the Angel Tree. Dent County residents can adopt an angel off the tree and purchase Christmas gifts for the angel. Angel Tree applications will be taken during the annual Dent County Fire District Toy Drive sign ups on Monday, November 26 and Thursday, November 29 from 3:00-6:00 in the afternoon each day.

Schools, churches, local governments or charitable organizations contemplating a community project that needs funding can apply for a grant from the Meramec Regional Community Foundation (MRCF). For the last seven years, MRCF has awarded grants to further local projects through its community grant program. An estimated six grants of $250 each will be available to nonprofit, 501(c)3 organizations, schools, faith-based organizations and governmental entities looking to address local needs that will enhance the quality of life within the community. 2012 marked the inaugural year for the grant program, and in the last seven years $9,900 in grant funds have been awarded to 40 community projects throughout the region. The grants are made possible through the Meramec Regional Community Foundation Community Grant-making Fund, which was created by a $30,000 donation from Meramec Regional Planning Commission. A portion of the fund’s earnings are distributed each year through grants. Awardees in 2018 included the Crawford County University Extension, CASA of South Central Missouri, Dent County Community Foundation, Art Works on Main Gallery in Owensville, the Ya Yas of Belle and the Caledonia Community Foundation. Applications for the 2019 grant round will be accepted online only until 5 p.m. on Jan. 31, 2019. The Salem Board of Aldermen will be meeting Monday night at 7:00 in the city hall council chambers. After the consent agenda, the board will hear from Parks and Recreation Director Tye Lydon reporting on the Park Board Meeting of November 8th, hear from City Administrator Ray Walden and Mayor Brad Nash. Resolution #5-2018, a resolution providing for the Municipal Election for one west ward Alderman and one east ward Alderman for the City of Salem on April 2nd, 2019, will be introduced and read. Resolution #5-6-2018, a resolution approving the sale of surplus city inventory and personal property deemed obsolete and unusable by the City using Purple Wave as the sale convenience. In new and miscellaneous business, the board will set newly elected officials salaries that will be effective after the municipal election. The meeting will then adjourn. The Board of Aldermen meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will participate in Rolla tomorrow in their kickoff game around noon. The boys will then be off until they face Farmington in Sullivan on Monday, November 26th at 6:00 in the Sullivan FCNB Bank It Challenge Tournament. The game on Monday night, November 26th, can be heard on KSMO.

The St. Louis Blues will be in Las Vegas tonight at 8:30 where they take on the Golden Knights. On Saturday, The Blues will travel to San Jose to face the Sharks at 9:00. Both games can be heard on KSMO Radio. The Blues have lost two straight games.
