Obituaries – Tuesday, November 27th, 2018
Funeral services for Richard Carden of Steelville, age 84, will be held today at 12:00 noon at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held from 11:00 this morning until service time. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.
Funeral services for Nina Dale (Chambers) Plank of Salem, age 103, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Salem Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be held from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the second Baptist Church.
Memorial services for Steve Garafola of Salem, age 56, will be at a later date in Bloomington, Illinois. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of Salem.

An accident occurred Sunday morning at 12:56 in Dent County on Highway 32, about eight miles east of Licking. According to the highway patrol report, a 2011 Ford Focus, driven by 74-year old Paul Davis of Willow Springs, traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck an embankment. Davis suffered moderate injuries and was transported by the Texas County Ambulance to Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston. The Ford sustained total damage and was towed by Jaus of Houston. Davis was not wearing a safety restraint at the time of the accident.
The Dent County Fire Protection District Toy Drive and the Salvation Army Angel Tree signups will be held TODAY and Thursday, November 29th from 3:00 to 6:00 in the afternoon at the Dent County Fire Station. Requirements are that children must be between the ages of newborn to 12 years, they must live with the parent/guardian who is signing the child up, and must reside in Dent County. Parents need to bring proof that they meet these requirements. This can be a print out from Division of Family Services. If financial aid is not received, parents can bring a letter from the school the child attends stating that the children live with that parent and the grade they are in. In addition, proof of residency can be presented in the form of a utility bill, a voter registration card or something similar. People can donate gently used toys in very good condition or brand new toys. They can be dropped off during normal business hours at the Dent County Fire Station or the front office of the KSMO Studios. Monetary donations may also be accepted at both locations. If you are unable to drop off toys, volunteers can pick them up if necessary provided enough notice is given. Parents or guardians may pickup the toys and the Angel Tree donations on Monday, December 19th beginning from 9:00 in the morning until 4:00 in the afternoon Dent County Fire Station. Preliminary data from the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) shows that deer hunters in Missouri harvested a near-record 199,427 deer during the November portion of fall firearms deer season, November 10th through the 20th. Of the 199,427 deer harvested, 102,930 were antlered bucks, 19,924 were button bucks, and 76,573 were does. Top harvest counties were Franklin with 4,021 deer checked, Howell with 3,858, and Callaway with 3,695. Dent County accounted for 1,378 antlered bucks, 330 button bucks and 1,181 does for a total of 2,889 total deer harvested. Last year hunters checked 192,797 deer during the 2017 November portion of firearms deer season. The recent-record season was 2012 with 204,668 deer harvested. For current ongoing preliminary harvest totals by season, county, and type of deer, and harvest summary from past years visit the MDC website. MDC reported eight firearms-related hunting incidents during the November portion of firearms deer season of which three involved fatalities — two of which occurred incidental to hunting while at hunting camps and one self-inflicted incident while in the field. Of the five non-fatal incidents, four were self-inflicted and the fifth occurred when the shooter struck a victim while swinging on game. Deer hunting in Missouri continues with archery deer hunting season through January 15th, 2019. Lastly, the alternative methods portion will run December 22nd through January 1st, 2019.
Dent County Prosecuting Attorney Andrew Curley has released information on the following cases ruled on in court on November 19th by Judge Kelly Parker. Julia Henson pled guilty to possession of heroin and suboxone. With no prior criminal history, Henson received a suspended sentence with 5 years probation involving drug treatment, among numerous other terms of probation. Austin Carter pled guilty to the possession of methamphetamine and received 7 years suspended imposition of sentence with 5 years probation and parole as requested by the State. Shawn Smith pled guilty to three counts of distribution of a controlled substance. Smith was sentenced to 15 years in the Division of Corrections under Section 559.115 as recommended by the sentencing assessment report and by the State. Leonard Eplin pled guilty to distribution, unlawful possession of a firearm, and possession of a controlled substance in a county jail. Eplin was sentenced to 12 years in the Department of Corrections due to prior felony criminal history as requested by the State.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers are seeded 7th and will play Waynesville Tuesday night at 6:00 at the Sullivan high School in the FCNB Bank-It Championship. In an earlier bracket released that was incorrect, it had Salem playing tonight. The Tigers will face the Tigers prior to the Sullivan – Potosi game Tuesday night. Salem is 0-1 on the year going into the game. You can hear the contest on KSMO Radio beginning with Tiger Talk and Coach Conrad Prugh at about 5:40 Tuesday afternoon.
In his final home game, Missouri quarterback Drew Lock rushed for two touchdowns and threw for two more as the Tigers beat Arkansas 38-0 on a damp and dreary Friday. Lock completed 16 of 25 passes for 221 yards, surpassing the 3,000-yard mark for the third straight season. Emanuel Hall caught both touchdown passes and finished with six receptions for 153 yards. Larry Rountree rushed 29 times for 119 yards to exceed 1,000 yards for the season. The Tigers finished the regular season with an 8-4 overall record and 4-4 in the Southeastern Conference. The Tigers are bowl eligible and will be attending their second straight bowl game and their 11th in the last 14 years. The bowl selections will be made next Sunday.
Patrik Laine scored five goals Saturday night to lead the Winnipeg Jets’ to an 8-4 victory at St. Louis. David Perron, Vladimir Tarasenko, Ryan O’Reilly and Pat Maroon scored for St. Louis who was coming off an impressive 6-2 win over Nashville Friday night. Ryan O’Reilly, Brayden Schenn and Alex Pietrangelo finished with a goal and an assist in that game. The Blues have lost four of their last five games and are 1-2 under new Coach Craig Berube. The Blues will be at Detroit Wednesday night to start a three game road trip.

The Salem Lady Tigers opened up their season with a home contest against the Plato Lady Eagles on Monday night. A back and forth first quarter saw Salem take a 14-11 lead after one, but the Lady Tigers would take control in the second quarter to lead by twenty at halftime. Salem’s lead swelled to as much as thirty points with the Lady Tigers winning by a final score of 84-67. Taylor Norris lead the Tigers scoring with 27 points. Madison Woolf added 15 for the Lady Tigers.
Dean Wade scored 21 points, and No. 12 Kansas State defeated Missouri 82-67 Monday night in the championship game of the Paradise Jam tournament. Jordan Geist had 24 points, Xavier Pinson added 12 and Mark Smith 11 for the Tigers who are 3 and 2 on the year.

The Salem Board of Aldermen met Monday evening at 7:00 in the city hall council chambers. After the consent agenda, the board heard from Parks and Recreation Director Tye Lydon who reported on the Park Board Meeting of November 8th. City Administrator Ray Walden then reported that media was presented information pertaining to snow routes in the City. He said that the City makes every effort to work with vehicle owners when they have left vehicles in the snow routes. Walden also noted that the City Offices would be closed November 22nd and 23rd for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Resolution #5-2018, a resolution providing for the Municipal Election for one west ward Alderman and one east ward Alderman for the City of Salem on April 2nd, 2019, was introduced and read. The Resolution passed 4-0. Resolution #6-2018, a resolution approving the sale of surplus city inventory and personal property deemed obsolete and unusable by the City using Purple Wave as the sale convenience was introduced and read, and was approved 4-0. In new and miscellaneous business, the board voted 4-0 to keep the salaries of newly elected officials the same at $400.00 a month after the municipal election. The meeting was then adjourned.
The Dent County Sheriffs department has released some reports. On Friday October 26th, deputies conducted a traffic stop near the 3000 block of North Highway 19. The driver, a 45 year-old Rolla man, was arrested for driving while suspended. He was taken to the Dent County Jail, fingerprinted, issued summons and released. Later that day, deputies responded to the 3000 block of Highway 32 West for a report of an abandoned four-wheeler. During the course of the investigation the four-wheeler was discovered to be stolen from Houston Missouri. The vehicle was returned to the owner. On Friday November 2nd, deputies conducted a traffic stop on Tower Street. During the course of the traffic stop, a 34 year-old Salem man was arrested for failure to register as a sex offender. He was taken to the Dent County Sheriff’s Office. On Sunday November 4th, deputies responded to the area of Highway H and Highway C for a report of a domestic disturbance. During the course of the investigation, a 41 year-old Salem man was arrested for domestic assault in the 4th degree. He was taken to the Dent County Jail, issued a summons and released. On Monday November 5h, deputies conducted a traffic stop on Highway P. During the course of the traffic stop, a 53 year-old Salem man was arrested for unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while revoked or suspended, hindering prosecution of a felony and possession of a controlled substance. The man was taken to the Dent County Sheriff’s Department and incarcerated. Then on Thursday November 8th, deputies conducted a traffic stop near the 100 block of County Road 6690. During the course of the traffic stop, a 32 year-old male was arrested for a warrant through probation and parole. The man was transported to the Dent County Sheriff’s Office and incarcerated. On Friday November 9th, deputies conducted a traffic stop near the 1000 block of County Road 5070. During the course of the traffic stop, a 32 year- old Salem man was arrested for driving while revoked/suspended 2nd or subsequent offense. The man was transported to the Dent County jail, issued summons and released. And finally on Monday November 12th, deputies traveled to the 500 block of East Roosevelt Street for a warrant check. During the course of the investigation, a 37 year-old Salem man was arrested on Dent County warrants. The man was transported to the Dent County Jail and incarcerated.
The Salvation Army Angel Tree signups for the Angel Tree will be November 26th and November 29th from 3:30 to 5:30 pm at the Dent County Fire Station. The Angel Tree is for children 12-years and under and you must bring proof of number of children in your household.
