The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. Cheryl Parker, the Dent County Court Advocate from the Russell House in Rolla, was in to ask the commission if she could put a banner up on the courthouse lawn for Domestic Violence Month. She said she would also be placing small purple flags in the ground in honor of those who have suffered domestic abuse in Dent County. This has been done the last few years and the commission approved her request. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said patch grading would be done and materials added on Dent County Road 5610. He said brush would be cut on county road 5400 and two men will be doing chip and seal repairs on Dent County Roads 4220 and 5220. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson reported patch grading would be done on county roads 4430 and 5300 while brush was going to be cut on Dent County Roads 2580, 2610 and 2613. He went on to say two men would be replacing a serpentine belt on Dent County Truck #124 and doing other maintenance, and two men would be installing pipes on Dent County Roads 2510 and 2560. Dent County Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles asked residents in Dent County to refrain from any type of outdoor burning during this extremely dry stretch of weather. He is asking people to please not burn any trash or do any open burning as winds are expected to gust over 20 mph the next couple of days that could lead to a widespread fire quickly. He also is reminding people to be careful when cutting high grass or bushhogging where a spark could set fields on fire. The commission was expecting a visit from Steve Davis from Shive-Hattery on the jail and justice center project. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
The Salem Board of Aldermen met Monday in the City Hall Council Chambers. The board approved a bid from C&E Auto Sales of $24,788 for a pickup for the street department, approved a $10,009.04 bid from Roberts Judson Company of Salem for materials to replace the roof on the Salem Police Department, and approved the recommendation of the Salem Park and Recreation Board to enter into contract negotiations with Westport Pools, Inc for the renovation and repair of the Alice Lou Craig Municipal Pool. After the consent agenda, Salem Parks and Recreation Director Tye Lydon gave his report from the Park and Recreation Board meetings held last week. This included program updates on Flag Football that begins this Saturday, and the Youth Basketball Program that will begin on December 2nd. Signups will begin soon for children 3-12 years of age for $25 per child. He also went over the numerous improvements made including new trash dispensers, new and refurbished picnic tables at all the parks, the repaired teetor-totter at Midyett Park, new benches at the Salem Tennis Courts, the basketball court being painted Carolina Blue, the main pavilion being painted blue and the chimney cleaned. He also said new equipment is going into the park restrooms including new louvered metal doors, soap dispensers, towel dispensers, grab bars and an exhaust fan. He said the new splash pad will be installed on April 16, 2018 by My Splash Pad and the board approved the donation of a new concrete box with ledges for the skateboard park that was donated by the Salem Skateboarders. City Administrator Ray Walden thanked everyone for attending the ribbon cutting of Billy’s Playground at the City Park, and stated the electronics and tire collection in Salem Saturday went well. He said he attended an MPUA meeting where they discussed concerns about cyber security of utility systems. Walden said the City Administrative Offices would be closed on Monday, October 9th for Columbus Day. The board approved Bill #3343 to establish a policy for net metering in the City of Salem, and approved Bill #3344 that allows the mayor to enter into a contract with Westport Pools, Inc. for professional consulting services for the repair and renovation of the Alice Lou Craig Municipal Pool. Mayor Brad Nash then appointed Harold Tubbs to the airport board and the aldermen approved his recommendation before the board went into closed session.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers Varsity lost in two straight games to Plato Monday night by the scores of 25-14 and 25-11. The JV won their match in two straight games winning 25-17 and 25-21. Salem will be at Houston tonight at 6:00 to face the Lady Tigers. The JV game will be first followed by the varsity match.
The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will be at Sullivan tomorrow at 4:30 to face the St. James Lady Tigers in the first round the Class 3, District 9 Tournament. Salem enters the game with a 13-10 record. Admission to the game this year is $5.00 for everyone six years of age and above. The game can be heard on KSMO Radio, online at ksmoradio.com and on Fidelity Local 6.
The Kansas City Chiefs remained the NFL’s only unbeaten team, with rookie kicker Harrison Butker’s third field goal of the game lifting K.C. to a 29-20 win over the Washington Redskins. Butker, making his NFL debut, connected on a 43-yard field goal with four seconds remaining, breaking a 20-20 tie. Linebacker Justin Houston returned a fumble for a 13-yard touchdown on the last play of the game to account for the final margin. Rookie Kareem Hunt powered Kansas City with 101 yards rushing on 21 carries. Alex Smith completed 27 of 37 passes for 293 yards and one touchdown. The Chiefs will be at Houston Sunday night.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department has released some reports. On September 25th, deputies spoke with an individual at the Dent County Sheriff’s Office in reference to a stolen gun. The gun was a Smith and Weston Model 686 six shot revolver. It is stainless steel with a six inch barrel and wooden grips. The gun was taken from a residence on County Road 2403 and was last seen in January. The report is still under investigation. On September 26th, deputies conducted an investigation at a residence in the 2000 block of Route H. While inside the residence, deputies located a 35-year old Licking man that had seven warrants for his arrest. He was taken into custody and was later extradited to Texas County. On Wednesday, September 27th, deputies conducted a traffic stop on South Sligo Street near West Gibbs. As a result of the stop, a 35-year old Salem woman was arrested for driving without a valid license. She was fingerprinted, issued a summons to appear in court and released. That same day, deputies responded to the 1000 block of County Road 6090 in reference to a burglary. It was reported that an electric grinder and chainsaw were stolen from an abandoned house on the property. This report is still under investigation.Also on the 27th, deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 3000 block of Dent County Road 4110. During the course of the stop, it was discovered that a passenger, a 26-year old Salem woman, had a warrant for her arrest. She was taken into custody and incarcerated in the Dent County Jail. Thursday, September 28th, deputies responded to the 45000 block of Highway 72 in reference to a theft. It was reported that three 14-day old pitbull puppies had been stolen. They are described as a blue and white male, a brindle and white female, and a blue dots male. This report is still under investigation. If anyone has information regarding any ongoing investigation, call the Dent County Sheriff’s Department at 729-3241.
The Salem Board of Aldermen will meet tonight at 7:00 at the City Hall Council Chambers at 7:00. At the meeting, the board will hear bids for a pickup for the street department, bids for a new roof at the Salem Police Department and hear the park board’s recommendation of a firmfrom the request for qualifications for the Alice Craig Municipal Pool. After the consent agenda, the board will receive a report for Park and Recreation Director Tye Lydon from the two Park Board meetings held last week, hear from City Administrator Ray Walden and also Mayor Brad Nash. In the introduction and reading of bills, the board will hear about Bill #3343 that would create an ordinance for the city to adopt a new metering service policy; and about Bill #3344 that would authorize the mayor to execute an agreement between the City of Salem and Westport Pools, Inc for professional consulting services for repairs and renovations to the city pool. The board will also hear from a request from Mayor Nash to make an appointment to the airport board before going into closed session to discuss contracts. The Board of Aldermen meeting tonight is open to the public.

The Salem Football Tigers scored 18 unanswered 4th quarter points taking advantage of three Mountain Grove turnovers and beating the Panthers Friday night, 33-22. Taylor Shipp and Sam Ball each finished with two touchdowns at Cameron Camden hit Lawson Toman on a 33-yard pass for the Salem scoring. Salem will be at Mountain View-Liberty to face the Eagles Friday night in SCA play starting at 7:00.
Signups for the City of Salem Adult Co-Ed Volleyball League for men and women age 18 and over is going on now through TOMORROW. Registration is per team with a minimum of three men and three women for $150. You can pickup and return your forms at the Salem Community Center@The Armory at 1200 West Rolla Road. Games will be held every Sunday starting October 15th at the Upper Elementary Gymnasium. The Salem Lady Softball Tigers went 1-3 in the Rolla Invitational Tournament this past weekend. On Friday, Salem lost to Waynesville 4-0, then lost to Buffalo by an 11-1 score. On Saturday, Salem beat the Rolla Lady Bulldogs, 15-0 and then lost to Pacific, 8-7. The Lady Tigers stand at the end of the regular season at 13-10 on the year. They are seeded 5th in the Class 3, District 9 Tournament that will be held in Sullivan. Salem will play St. James on Wednesday at 4:30. Admission to the game this year is $5.00 for everyone six years of age and above.
Aaron Wilkerson retired the first 17 batters he faced Sunday as the Milwaukee Brewers bounced the St. Louis Cardinals 6-1 at Busch Stadium. Wilkerson (1-0), making his second big league start, lost his perfect game on a pinch-hit single by Jose Martinez in the sixth. Randal Grichuk’s solo homer in the seventh spoiled the shutout. Jack Flaherty (0-2) took the loss for the Cardinals, who wound up 83-79. Flaherty worked five innings, yielding five hits and four runs with a pair of walks and five strikeouts. A crowd of 44,787 attended the game, bringing St. Louis’ season attendance to 3,447,937 which is the second-highest in the majors.
The Washington Capitals scored two goals in the 3rd period and came back to beat the St. Louis Blues in the final pre-season game for both teams, 4-3. The Blues got goals from Dmitri Jaskin, Brayden Schenn and Wade Megan. St. Louis will open up their season at Pittsburgh Wednesday night at 6:30 on KSMO.
The Arizona Diamondbacks go into the wild card game against the Colorado Rockies Wednesday on a high note after pounding Kansas City in the final regular season game, 14-2 at Kaufmann Stadium. Eric Hosmer homered for the Royals who finished the year at 80-82.

This Sunday, new general sales tax rates go into effect that will be affecting business in Salem and in Dent County. The new sales tax rate for the City of Salem will be 8.350%, and the new rate for business in the county will be 6.475%. These rates changed with the passage of the two propositions to fund build and maintain a new jail. The new food sales tax will be 5.35% in the city and 3.475% in the county. For other pertinent information about the changes in the tax rates of if you have not received notification from the state, contact the Missouri Department of Revenue at 573-751-2836 to get more information. Remember, if you have a business that collects sales taxes, these changes need to be made to your cash registers to update the sales tax to start Sunday. You may need to contact your software company if they set up the rates for you on your machine.
The Dent County Commission met Thursday morning at the courthouse. Wade Jadwin was in to ask about an update on the status of getting county road 5080 chip and sealed. District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said the priority in his district is to take care of the existing roads before any new roads are considered. Purcell did say Dent County Road 5080 was at top of the priority list when it comes to adding a new chip and seal road. In the road report, Commissioner Purcell said patch grading would be done and materials added to Dent County Road 5610 that completes that Title 2 Project. He said a man would be going to Springfield to get oil for chip and seal repair while another man would be replacing or repairing road signs that have been damaged or stolen. The worst area according to Purcell is the intersection of Highway 19 and county road 5510. If anyone sees anyone damaging road signs or stealing them, please call the Dent County Sheriff’s Office at 729-3241. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 2510 and 2520. He also said county trucks 122 and 124 were due for service and that will be done, plus men are working on replacing a seal on the backhoe. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles stated he attended the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Executive Board meeting Tuesday where 12 applications were funded for a total of $197,585 for recycling and waste reduction. At 10:00, bids were opened for the installation of new windows on the 3rd floor of the courthouse. Two bids were received: Armin Scheller with Restoration Services of Salem for $6,980.00 and the other from Cahill Construction Company for $10,000. The Commissioners went with the low bid from Restoration Services. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
There will be an electronics and tire collection from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm this Saturday at the City of Salem construction parking lot at the corner of Third Street and Grand Avenue. The collection is for residential items only and you must unload items yourself. There is a $10.00 fee for CRT TVs, CRT computer monitors, flat screen TVs and flat screen computer monitors. Tire fees are $2.00 for passenger tires, $7.50 for truck tires, and $35.00 for tractor tires. There is no charge to drop off your old computers, DVD and CD players, cassette decks, keyboards, printers, cell phones, power tools or anything on a power cord. Some items will not be accepted items like VHS & data tapes, floppy disks, smoke detectors, thermostats, medical waste, gas containers, anything leaking oil or acid, broken ink or toner cartridges, broken CRT TVs or monitors. Residents of Dent, Crawford, Gasconade, Maries, Phelps, Pulaski and Washington Counties are eligible to participate in the collection. Sponsorship of the event is by Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the City of Salem, Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District, and Meramec Regional Planning Commission.
