The Ava Bears shut out the Salem Tigers Friday night in high school football action, 39-0. Stephan Copeland scored three touchdowns for the Bears whose defense held the Tigers offense to a total of 130 yards. Salem drops to 2-3 on the year and 1-2 in the SCA. Salem will be at Willow Springs Friday night.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers won the St. James Tournament on a tiebreaker Saturday. Salem beat Newburg, 20-0, then beat St. James, 10-5, and lost to Glendale, 8-3. St. James, Glendale, and Salem all went 2-1 in the tournament, but the Tigers won it on the tiebreaker. Brooke Adams, Alexus Woolman and Chloe Bonner were all named to the All-Tournament Team. Salem is now 6-7 on the year and they will be at Dixon today at 4:30.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will travel to St. Clair tonight at 5:30. Salem is 6-8 going into the non-conference match.

Miles Mikolas won his fourth straight start giving up only two hits in seven innings, Matt Carpenter hit his NL-leading 36th homer and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Francisco Giants 9-2 on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep and remain on track for the NL’s second wild card. The Cardinals start a key three game series tonight against the Milwaukee Brewers beginning at 6:20 on KSMO.

Rookie Brad Keller pitched seven strong innings, Cam Gallagher broke a sixth-inning tie with a two-run single and the Kansas City Royals held on to beat the Detroit Tigers 3-2 on Sunday. The Royals will have the tonight off.

Patrick Mahomes torched San Francisco’s banged-up pass defense by throwing for 314 yards and three touchdowns in a 38-27 victory over the 49ers. Mahomes now has 13 touchdown passes without an interception, breaking the NFL record for TD passes in the first three weeks of a season. The Chiefs will play at Denver next Monday.

The Missouri Tigers lost to Georgia Saturday by the final score of 43-29. Missouri (3-1, 0-1 Southeastern Conference) entered the game ranked seventh nationally in total offense and Drew Lock had 11 touchdown passes. Georgia (4-0, 2-0 SEC) held Lock without a touchdown pass, but yielded 172 yards rushing and four TDs on the ground. Missouri defense could not stop the Bulldog offense. A fumble returned for a touchdown and a blocked punt recovered in the end zone by Georgia proved to be the difference. Missouri is off this Saturday

Sammy Blais scored two goals to lead the Blues past the Columbus Blue Jackets in exhibition play on Sunday afternoon. Ville Husso got his second pre-season win stopping 16 of 17 shots. The Blues are now 3-1 on the pre-season and face Washington Tuesday night.
