The Salem High School Coaches have voted on the top male and female athlete for the 2017-2108 year in the 9th through 12th grades. The Lady Tiger Award went to Baylee Bilyeu and the Tiger Award went to Nate Bray. Congratulations!

Michael Wacha lost a no-hit bid in the ninth inning when pinch-hitter Colin Moran led off with a single, as the Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates Sunday, 5-0. Wacha improved to 7-1 on the year as he struck out eight and walked two while mixing his fastball, curve and changeup. Wacha retired the first 13 batters he faced, then walked two hitters in the 5th inning. He has allowed two runs or less in his last nine starts. In the first inning, The Cardinals took advantage of a walk, single and error to load the bases before Marcell Ozuna hit a grand slam on the eighth pitch of the game. The Red Birds added a run in the 8th inning as they took 3 of 4 games from the Pirates, two with walk-off homers in the 9th inning. The Cards are off today.

Matt Olson hit a three-run homer in the eighth as the Oakland Athletics defeated the Kansas City Royals 5-1 on Sunday to win the series. Olson went 5 for 11 with three home runs, eight RBIs and scored five times in the series. The Royals have lost 21 of 31 home games. The Royals begin a series against the LA Angels of Anaheim tonight.

The Royals own five of the first 58 picks in the major league draft, which begins today. The Royals have the 18th, 33rd, 34th, 40th and 58th selections. They gained 1st-round compensation picks for the loss of free agents Lorenzo Cain and Eric Hosmer, plus competitive balance picks. The Royals have been allotted $12,781,900 for signing bonuses, the largest pool in this year’s draft.
