Jack Flaherty cruised through six innings, Matt Carpenter hit another homer and the St. Louis Cardinals held on for a 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday. Flaherty, now 5-6 on the year allowed three hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. Carpenter hit a solo home run in the fifth and Jedd Gyorko singled to drive in a run later that inning to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead. Bud Norris retired the side in order with two strikeouts in the ninth for his 21st save. St. Louis took the final two games of the three-game series against Pittsburgh to move past the Pirates into third alone in the National League Central. This is the third straight series win for St. Louis. The Cardinals will start a three game series tonight against Miami beginning at 5:15 on KSMO Radio.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced they have claimed Tyson Ross off waivers from the San Diego Padres, and he will join the team in Miami. Ross was 6-9 with a 4.45 ERA and 107 strikeouts in 22 starts for the Padres.

Rookie Jake Cave hit his first career grand slam and closer Fernando Rodney survived a chaotic ninth inning as the Minnesota Twins beat the Kansas City Royals 6-5 on Sunday. Royals’ starter Danny Duffy (7-10) was roughed him up for six runs in six innings. Lucas Duda and Witt Merrifield each homered for the Royals who open a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs in Kansas City.
