Blake Edwards went the distance for the Salem Baseball Tigers giving up just four hits and a run as the Salem Baseball Tigers captured at least a share of the SCA Conference Championship with a 10-1 win over the Thayer Bobcats on Thursday at the SHS Baseball Field. Edwards also had two of the Salem seven hits in the game. Roy Stevens drove in three runs with a single and sacrifice fly, and Cayden Moody drove in two runs with walks. Salem is 10-6-1 on the year and finish with a 6-1 SCA Conference record. Salem could win the conference outright if the Willow Springs Bears beat the Ava Bears Tuesday. The next game for Salem will be Monday when they play at West Plains starting at 4:30.
JJ Smith and Braiden Gapsch made the Class 1, District 5 All-District team by finishing 4th in the Tennis doubles’ tournament. Blayne Canaday also made the All-District team by finishing 4th in the singles tournament. The Salem Tigers will play Willow Springs in the team district tournament Monday at 4:00 at the Salem Park.
The Salem High School Track and Field teams were in St. James yesterday. The Salem Boys Varsity team took first place overall out of 13 schools, while the girls varsity team took fifth overall out of 14 teams.
The Cincinnati Reds scored nine runs on nine hits including a two-run homer by Jose Trevino which would be all the offense they would need as the beat the St. Louis Cardinals Thursday, 9-1. The Cards only run scored on an error by the Reds. The Cardinals come home to face the New York Mets this weekend with the broadcast starting tonight at 6:20, then starting at 12:20 Saturday and Sunday on KSMO Radio.
Bobby Witt, Jr, had a two-run homer as the Kansas City Royals beat the Tampa Bay Rays Thursday, 8-2. Maikel Garcia had three hits for the Royals who will be in Baltimore to face the Orioles this weekend.
The St. Louis Blues are in a “must win” situation tonight as they host the Winnipeg Jets at 7:00 tonight trailing in the best of seven game series, 3 games to 2 in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The game will be delayed on KSMO until 9:30 after Cards baseball.
