The Salem Police Department was contacted Tuesday by a local gas station about a device that tracks credit card information that was placed inside the gas pumps. The device was later determined to be a credit card skimmer. Someone had installed the skimmer inside of the gas pumps behind the credit card machine. The Salem Police Department was able to take possession of two devices and have them sent for analysis. The investigation into this is ongoing. At this time, the Salem Police is not certain if this was the only time this has happened. They also are not certain if these devices store the information for future use or can transmit the captured credit card information via transmitter. They are asking anyone who has used their credit card at gas stations recently to monitor their credit card accounts and bank statements for unauthorized transactions. If you have questions, contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.
