The FFA Career Development Event teams participated in the Area 13 competitions with two Salem FFA teams taking second place in their respective competition that included the Livestock Team and the Meats Evaluation Team. Daylen Harrison was the highest scorer from Salem on the Livestock Team, taking 3rd overall, while Nate Case was the highest scorer from Salem for the Meats Evaluation Teams, placing 5th overall. The Dairy Cattle Team captured third place out of 12 teams as Lindsay Sutton was the highest scorer coming in 7th place overall. Other Salem teams that participated in the Area 13 competition included the Ag Mechanics Team who took 4th place, the Soils Team coming in 5th place, the FFA Knowledge Team took 7th place and qualified for the competition at district level, the Poultry Team came in 10th place, and the Dairy Foods Team and Forestry Team each came in 11th in their respective competitions. In the individual competitions, Dalton Sanders took 1st place in Extemporaneous Speaking and Kolson Seay took 2nd place in Job Interview. They will also be moving on to the district level competitions as well.

Congratulations to the Salem High School Band under the direction of David Schatz for getting the highest Exemplary 1 rating at the MSHSAA State Festival on Friday, March 23rd. Then on Saturday, March 24th, the Salem High School Band sent 23 students to the MSHSAA District Festival. These students performed in 5 small ensemble and 14 solo events. Congratulations to three soloists: Marina Mitani, Christopher McSwain & Johnathan Stark; and two ensembles: the Snare Trio made up of Austin Merritt, Hayden Gotchal, & Brian Kohut; and the Saxophone Trio comprised off Jaden Dunn, Jacob Stacy, & Marina Mitani for getting Exemplary 1 ratings. These soloists and ensembles will move on to perform at the MSHSAA State Festival on April 27th.

An accident occurred in Dent County Thursday evening at 6:45 on Highway 68 seven miles north of Salem. According to the Highway Patrol Report a 2000 Chevrolet Truck, driven by 69 year-old William Hurley of Salem, ran off the right side of the roadway to avoid striking another vehicle and came to rest in the ditch. Hurley and a passenger, 53 year-old Samuel Bowden of Salem, suffered minor injuries and were both transported to Salem Memorial District Hospital by Salem Ambulance. The report stated that both men were wearing safety restraints at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet sustained minor damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing.

The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of February. During the month, they wrote three equipment repair orders, eight summons to appear in court, five warning tickets, and 14 traffic tickets. The Salem Police Department investigated 18 accidents, two burglaries, one report of a dog bite, one report of domestic assault, five reports of domestic violence, four driving while being intoxicated reports, served one fugitive warrant, three reports of leaving the scene of an accident and one report of a lost or stolen license plate. The department also investigated one report of a missing person, four reports of possession of a controlled substance, one report of possession of drug paraphernalia, two reports of property damage, and one report of resisting or interfering with an arrest, one tampering report, they had eight vehicles towed, had four 96 hour commitments, and nine reports of stealing. The police department received 1,258 calls for service during the month and handled 106 walk-ins to the station. They spent 14 hours in court testifying and 8 hours as court bailiff. The Salem Police Department drove a total of 6,027 miles and arrested 15 males and 10 females during the month of February.

There will be a Replacement Heifer Workshop April 10th at the Bank of Salem Courtesy Room in Salem from 6:30 in the evening until 8:30. Developing replacement heifers is a critical component to the beef business. By attending this workshop, strategies, and the economics of heifer development will be learned. The cost of this workshop is $10 per person, or $15 per farm couple.
