Sports – Monday, July 15th, 2024
The Cardinals played the Cubs on Friday, had a double header Saturday, and finished the four game series yesterday. The result was a 4-1 series victory for the Cardinals. As of today the Cardinals are just five games behind the Brewers for the National League Central, with a record of 50-46. Their next game will be against the Atlanta Braves this Friday at 6:20 in the evening. You can tune into KSMO Radio 1340 AM, 95.7 FM to listen to this game live.
The Royals played the Red Sox over the weekend and after winning the first game on Friday 6-1, they were shutout on Saturday 5-0. Yesterday afternoon was a close loss with a final score of 4-5. After the All-Star break, the 52-45 Royals will start a three game series against the White Sox on Friday, in Kansas City.
The Major League Baseball All-Star week is currently in full swing, with the Gatorade All-Star Workout Day today, followed up with the T-Mobile Home Run Derby. On Tuesday, there will be the All-Star Red Carpet Show followed by the MLB All-Star Game.

The Cardinals and Royals played a double header yesterday. In their first game, Nolan Arenado got the Cards on the board first with a home run. Then in the bottom of the 3rd Alec Burleson had a homer of his own lifting the Cards up to an early 3-0 lead. In the top of the 5th the Royals tied the game up with a pair of doubles. After that the Royals would take the lead and never look back with a Salvado Perez home run as the Kansas City Royals secured the 6-4 victory. Hours later the Royals and Cards faced off again and once again the Cards would strike first with a Lars Nootbaar home run, giving the Cards a quick 1-0 lead. MJ Melendez immediately respond with a homer of his own, tying up the game, then in the top of the 4th, the Royals would score a pair of runs and never relinquish the lead, going on to sweep the two game series with a 8-5 victory. The Cardinals and Royals game yesterday was rained out and postponed to this afternoon, and with today’s regularly scheduled game already on the books we’ll have a double header! The first game will start at 12:45 this afternoon, and the second later this evening at 6:45. You can tune into both of these games on your hometown radio station KSMO 1340 AM & 95.7 FM.

The St. Louis Cardinals wrapped up their four game series yesterday by shutting out the Washington Nationals 6-0, taking the overall series 3-1. The Cardinals have won or split each series they’ve played since facing the Colorado Rockies on June 6th, and they now head home for a two game face off with the Kansas City Royals who had the day off yesterday. The Royals are entering the game with a 49-43 record while the Cards are at 48-42. Weather may delay the game due to rain and potential thunderstorms expected.

The St. Louis Cardinals had their hands full with the Washington Nationals over the weekend. On Friday Washington got off to a quick 5-0 lead over the Cards but by the top of the 4th St. Louis began to battle back and in the 9th inning they tied up the game. It took two extra innings but the Cards were victorious by the end of the night with a 7-6 score. On Saturday, it was a game to forget, the Nationals went up 9 by the bottom of the 2nd. The Cards would have a 4 run 3rd but it wouldn’t be enough as the final score would result in a 6-14 loss. Yesterday the Cardinals bounced back with a 8-3 red bird winner. The Kansas City Royals faced the Colorado Rockies over the holiday weekend, on Friday Kansas City took the lead early but during the bottom of the 8th the Rockies went up a run and held on for the win, final score 2-4. Then Saturday, the Rockies would continue their winning ways putting down the Royals 1-3, however that would all change as yesterday the Royals had a dominate showing, routing the Rockies with a 10-1 victory. The Royals are off today as they prepare for a Missouri showdown on Tuesday versus the Cardinals.

The St. Louis Cardinals played the Pittsburgh Pirates yesterday, and just like Wednesday’s game, extra innings were needed to determine a winner. The Cardinals would go up by a run early in the 2nd inning with a double by Dylan Carlson. The Pirates respond with a run of their own in the 4th. Five scoreless innings later, the Cardinals would get two runs in the top of the 10th just to see Pittsburgh turn the final moments of the game into a nail-biter, scoring one run in on a sacrifice fly, then almost snuck a ground ball past Masyn Winn. Winn scooped up the ball and flipped it to Nolan Gorman to secure the win for the Cards with a 3-2 score. The Kansas City Royals played their third and final game of the series versus the Tampa Bay Rays last night. In a game with a combined score of 18 runs, the Rays came away with the victory posting a final score of 10-8. The Royals now travel west to visit the Colorado Rockies for a three game series starting this evening at 7:10, then moving onto Saturday night at 8:10, and wrapping up Sunday afternoon at 2:10.

The St. Louis Cardinals played the Pittsburgh Pirates yesterday, and during the top of the 4th inning, Nolan Gorman crushed a grand slam home run giving the Cardinals a commanding 6-0 lead and they went on to beat Pittsburgh, 7-4. Alec Burleson had a two-run homer in the game and Brendan Donovan had three hits. The Cardinals and Pirates play this afternoon at 4:45 on KSMO Radio 1340 AM, 95.7 FM at 4:45.
The Kansas City Royals fell to the Tamp Bay Rays Tuesday night, 5-1. Those two teams play again tonight in Kansas City.
The St. Louis Blues schedule was released yesterday afternoon at 11:00, amid a busy offseason seeing the Blues participating in new player signings and trades. Preseason will begin with the Blues facing the Dallas Stars September 21st, and wrapping up against the Chicago Blackhawks in Milwaukee on October 5th. The upcoming 2024-2025 regular season has the Blues starting with three road games out west against the Seattle Kraken, San Jose Sharks, and Vegas Golden Knights before coming home to their Home Opener, October 15, versus the Minnesota Wild. The St. Louis Cardinals shut out the Cincinnati Reds 2-0 yesterday, finishing up the month of June with a 43-40 record. Notably Lance Lynn threw his 1,000th career strikeout as a Cardinal. The Kansas City Royals took a lead early against the Cleveland Guardians and never looked back on their way to a 6-2 victory yesterday. This wraps up a series the Royals took 3-1. Tuesday the Tampa Bay Rays are coming to Kauffman Stadium. The Royals are currently 5 games behind the lead in the American League Central.

Miles Mikolas gave up nine runs in 4 1/3rd innings as the Cincinnati Reds destroyed the Cardinals Thursday, 11-4. Nolan Arenado hit a two run homer for St. Louis who plays the Reds tonight at 6:20, then on Saturday and Sunday at 12:20 on KSMO Radio.
Back-to-back triples by Kyle Isbel and Maikel Garcia in the 6th inning scored two runs and led Kansas City to a 2-1 win over Cleveland Thursday in Kansas City. The Royals and Guardians continue their series this weekend.
