Sports – Wednesday, April 16th 2025
The Salem FFA has released results from their recent South Central District competitions in Career Development Events (CDE) and Leadership Development Events (LDE). Konner Headrick place 1st in FFA Creed Speaking and Maggie Hogan was 1st in Advanced Public Speaking. Both Headrick and Hogan will compete in their respective LDE’s during the State FFA Convention April 24th. The CDE results included 2nd Place Ag Sales Team of Dalli Johnson, Grant Case, Jessi Mast and James Heithold, 2nd Place Entomology Team of Makena Faulkner, Neva Trosper, Kaylynn Sites and Charlee Duncan. The Food Science Team of Bea Hovey, Abbi Terrill and Dalli Johnson placed 3rd, the Forestry Team of
Grant Case, James Heithold, and Zoe Cochran placed 6th, and the Poultry Team of Jessi Mast, Dylan Parker, Tayla Schafer, and Alex Lowe place 6th. The Ag Sales, Entomology, Food Science, Forestry, and Poultry teams all qualified for State Competition in Columbia April 24th and 25th. Grant Case, Kacy Chapman, and Torri Schafer will be receiving their State FFA Degrees during the Convention. Competing for State Proficiency Award Honors will be Dalli Johnson in Poultry Production, Grant Case in Wildlife Management and Saylor VanWyk in Ag Mechanics Repair and Design. Congratulations Salem FFA members.
Alaina Norris led the Lady Tigers with three RBIs on two hits as the Salem Lady Tigers Softball team defeated the Licking Lady Wildcats yesterday by a score of 15-10.
The Salem Tiger Boys Tennis team went on the road to defeat the Willow Springs Bears 7-2.
The Salem Tiger Boys Golf team will be at the St. James Tournament today.
The Salem Tiger Baseball team is traveling to Willow Springs today to take on the Bears. The varsity game is set to begin at 4:30 and you can listen to this game live on KSMO 1340 AM & 95.7 FM and audio streaming on KSMO Media.
The St. Louis Blues finished the regular season with a dominant victory over the Utah Hockey Club, 6-1. Brayden Schenn, Pavel Buchnevich, Jimmy Snuggerud, and Zack Bulduc all pick up goals in the first and Jordan Kyrou scored a pair in the third. In this final game, the Blues have clinched a playoff spot.
The St. Louis Cardinals were shut out by the Houston Astros 2-0. They’ll play again this afternoon live on KSMO Radio with coverage to start at 11:20.
The Kansas City Royals fell to the New York Yankees 4-2, they face off again tonight at 6:05.

The Salem Baseball Tigers scored ten runs in the 1st inning and seven more in the 2nd inning enroute to an 18-3 win. Salem only had seven hits, but they were given ten walks and a hit batsman. Kash Howard had two hits and three RBI, Sylis Dubois had a triple, walked three times and drove in three runs, while Hayden Ragsdale and Blake Edwards each had a hit and two RBI. Salem is now 7-2-1 on the year and 3-0 in the SCA Conference. Salem will be at Willow Springs Wednesday afternoon at 4:30.
Khila Smith pitched a five-inning perfect game for Willow Springs and also had three hits, three RBI and scored three times to lead the Lady Bears past Salem, 11-0. Salem falls to 7-6 on the year and 1-2 in the SCA Conference. The Lady Tigers will be at Licking today to face the Lady Wildcats starting at 4:30.
The Salem Tigers Tennis Team will be at Willow Springs today.
The Salem Golf Team will participate in the Cabool Invitational today.
The St. Louis Blues will finish up their regular season schedule tonight against the Utah Hockey Club. You can listen to this game on KSMO Radio on a delay following Cardinals baseball.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers went 2-2 on their recent four-game home stand losing Friday to East Carter by the score of 17-4. East Carter had two homers out of their 16 hits, plus a big eight-run 4th inning propelled by three Salem errors helped seal the fate of the shorthanded Lady Tigers. Raven Gillam had two hits for Salem who fall to 7-5 on the season. The Lady Tigers start a three-game road trip today at Willow Springs at 4:30. Salem is 1-1 in the SCA play.
The Salem Baseball Tigers will host Cabool today at the SHS Baseball Field Complex starting at 4:30. Salem is 2-0 in the SCA Conference and 6-2-1 on the season. Listen to the game on KSMO Radio and video streamed om KSMO Media.
The Salem Tennis Tigers beat Mountain Grove Friday, 7-2 to improve to 4-1 on the year. They’re in Rolla today to face the Bulldogs at 4:00.
The Salem Junior High Boys and Girls Track teams will be at St. James today starting at 3:00.
The St. Louis Blues lost their game versus the Seattle Kraken in overtime, 4-3. Their last game of the regular season is tomorrow versus the Utah Hockey Club at 7:00 in the evening.
The St. Louis Cardinals played a three game series against the Philadelphia Phillies, and took the series 2-1. They play the Houston Astros tonight on KSMO radio, with live coverage starting following Salem Tigers baseball.

Blake Edwards threw a five-inning two hit shutout as the Salem Baseball Tigers won their third straight game beating Houston, 10-0. Edwards finished with nine strikeouts and a walk as Salem banged out nine hits led by Kash Howard with two hits and two RBI and Bryar Bobbitt with two hits and an RBI. Roy Stevens and Hayden Ragsdale each had two-RBI singles in the game as the Tigers go to 6-2-1 on the year and 2-0 in the SCA Conference. Salem will host Cabool Monday afternoon at 4:30. The Salem Lady Softball Tigers scored nine runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to break open a 14-14 game and beat the Cabool Lady Bulldogs Thursday at the Salem City Park, 23-15. The Lady Tigers were led by Alaina Norris with three hits and five RBI, and Bailey Mahurin with three hits and four RBI. Raven Gillam had four hits and two RBI for Salem who improves to improve to 7-4 and are now 1-1 in the SCA Conference. The Lady Tigers will host East Carter today at 4:30 at the Salem City Park Field. At the Salem Tennis Invitational held Wednesday at the Salem City Park, the Salem Tigers won the invitational over Mountain Grove, 13 points to 12 points. JJ Smith and Braiden Gapsch took first individually in doubles. The Tennis Tigers will be at Mountain Grove today at 4:00.
The Salem Golf team participated in the Salem Invitational yesterday and placed second out of six schools with a score of 438, just 27 points behind the overall team winner, St. James. Individual Medalist for Salem include, Aiden Summers (80), Atticus Givens (83), and Daniel Black (83). Salem will next compete at the Cabool Invitational next Tuesday in Cabool.
The St. Louis Cardinals had Thursday off and will host the Philadelphia Phillies this weekend starting tonight right after Salem Lady Tiger Softball on KSMO. On Saturday and Sunday, the Cards and Phillies will tangle starting at 12:20 on and both game scan be heard on KSMO.
Jonathan India’s RBI single tied the game in the 7th inning and Bobby Witt’s sacrifice fly later that inning brought in the go-ahead and eventual game winning run as the Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins Thursday, 3-2. The Royals begin a three-game series in Cleveland tonight.
The St. Louis Blues will be at Seattle Saturday night to face the Kraken starting at 8:30 on KSMO. The Blues are one win away from clinching a playoff spot.

The Salem Tennis team bounced back after their first loss on the season with a victory during the Salem Invitational Tournament yesterday.
The Salem JV Baseball Tigers played their game against St. James on Tuesday and came out swinging scoring six runs in the first inning. After only four innings Salem would force the mercy rule by outsourcing St. James, 18-5. Ryan Halinar led the JV Tigers with three hits and recorded five RBIs during the game.
The Salem Tiger Baseball team will be hosting the Houston Tigers this afternoon at 4:30 and a JV game to follow at 6:00. The Salem Lady Tiger Softball team is hosting the Cabool Lady Bulldogs this afternoon at the Salem City Park. The Lady Tigers have scored for a combined 58 runs in their last three games. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30.
Both the Salem Boys and Girls track and field teams will be competing today at the Mountain Grove Open.
The St. Louis Blues faced off with the Edmonton Oilers late last night, and after a lot of early interruptions in play Ryan Suter scored first on the night to give the Blues the early led. In the second the Oilers netted a pair of goals. Jordan Kyrou responded with a snap shot to tie the game at two early in the third, but at midnight the Blues fell to the Oilers in a close one, 4-3.
The St. Louis Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates needed twelve innings before either team could get on the board, each picking up one run in the inning. For the Cardinals, it was a Jordan Walker single, bringing in Willson Contreras to score. However, in the thirteenth inning a Joey Bart single brought in Alexander Canario to score and handed the Cardinals their seventh loss on the young season with a final score of 2-1.
The Kansas City Royals were shutout by the Minnesota Twins last night by a score of 4-0. The Royals led the series 2-1, game four is this afternoon at 1:10.

Reagan Dubois completed hitting for the cycle with a 5th-inning walk off three-run homer as the Salem Lady Softball Tigers beat the Dixon Lady Bulldogs Tuesday, 20-9. Dubois finished the day with eight RBI with a two-run double, two-run triple, RBI single and the three-run homer. Taylor Fulton and Alexis White had three hits for Salem who improve to 6-4 on the year. They will host Cabool Thursday at 4:30 at the Salem City Park.
Kash Howard went 4-5 with four RBI and Sylis Dubois went 2-3 with four RBI as the Salem Baseball Tigers blasted St. James in six-innings Tuesday, 15-5 that featured a 12-run 5th inning for Salem. Roy Stevens hit his second homer of the year and finished 3 for 4 as Salem finished with 15 hits. Bryar Bobbitt went the distance giving up five runs on five hits to get the win. Salem improves to 5-2-1 on the year and they will host Houston Thursday afternoon at the SHS Baseball Field Complex. Salem is 1-0 in the SCA Conference.
The Salem Tennis Team will host the Salem Invitational today at the Salem City Park.
The Salem JV Track team will be at the Poplar Bluff JV meet today starting at 2:30.
Victor Scott II tripled in two runs and also doubled as the St. Louis Cardinals roughed up Pittsburgh ace Paul Skenes for a career-high five earned runs and six hits on Tuesday in a 5-3 Red Bird victory over the Pirates at PNC Park. Brendon Donovan had two hits and an RBI for the Cardinals who stopped their four-game losing streak. Sonny Gray got the win to go to 2-0 on the year. The Cards and Pirates play the rubber game this morning on KSMO starting at 10:40 with the pre-game show.
The Kansas City Royals played their second of four games versus the Minnesota Twins last night and in a close one the Royals defeated the Twins 2-1. Game three is tonight at 6:40.

Roy Steven’s two-RBI single in the 1st inning proved to be all the Salem Tigers would need as they hung on for a 2-1win Monday over the Ava Bears in SCA Conference play behind the pitching of Blake Edwards, Corby Ball and Roy Stevens. Cayden Moody went 2 for 3 for the Tigers who only had five hits. Salem is 4-2-1 on the year and 1-0 in the SCA Conference. They will be at St. James today at 4:30.
The Salem Lady Softball Tigers and Houston Lady Softball Tigers opened the SCA Conference season with an insane Houston win, 26-21. A 12-run 6th inning for Houston proved to be too much for Salem to come back from. Eight Salem Lady Tigers had two hits in the game and Reagan Dubois had six RBI, but 14 Salem errors led to 15 unearned runs in the loss. Salem had battled back from an 11-2 deficit and led 15-13 after five innings before the 6th inning explosion for Houston. Salem falls to 5-4 and 0-1 in the SCA Conference. The JV Salem Lady Tigers won their game by a score of 14-13. The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will host Dixon this afternoon at the Salem City Park Field starting at 4:30. That game will be on KSMO Radio starting at 4:15 with Tiger Talk and Coach Cody Woody as we hear more about this game as well as today’s contest. The Salem Tennis Team lost to Waynesville Monday 9-0 to fall to 3-1 on the year. Salem will participate in the Salem Invitational Wednesday.

The St. Louis Cardinals dropped the first of a three-game series to Pittsburgh Monday, 8-4. It was the Cardinal’s 4th straight loss. Yohel Pozo and Masyn Winn homered for the Cardinals who will play the Pirates again tonight, joined in progress after Lady Tiger Softball on KSMO Radio.
Michael Lorenzen whiffs three batters in the six innings pitched in his start against the Minnesota Twins Monday, giving up only one run as the Kansas City Royals beat Minnesota, 4-2. Kyle Isbel homered and three hits for the Royals who host Minnesota again tonight with first pitch at 6:40.
Alex Iafallo’s goal in the 3rd period proved to be the difference as the Winnipeg Jets beat the St. Louis Blues Monday, 3-1. Pavel Buchnevich had the only goal for the Blues who saw their 12-game winning streak come to an end. The Blues will be in Edmonton Wednesday night to face the Oilers. The Blues are currently in the top Wildcard spot with four teams still within a mathematical chance of challenging them.

At the time of this publication there are no current Salem High School sports cancellations, however it is likely that Athletic Directors and School Administrators from various schools will be reviewing their facilities this morning to determine the feasibility of playing the following matches. The St. Louis Blues faced the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday and within a minute Zach Bolduc scored the first goal of the night. Jake Neighbours and Pavel Buchnevich would each score and Bolduc would add a second goal before Colorado would even get on the board late in the second. In the third, the game would tighten up but a Robert Thomas wrist shot would prove to be the decisive goal giving the Blues a 5-4 victory. With twelve straight wins, that sets a Blues team record for most in a row. The Pittsburgh Penguins hold the NHL record, with seventeen consecutive wins during the 1992-93 season. The Blues are in Winnipeg tonight to face off against the Jets. The St. Louis Cardinals started a series with the Boston Red Sox on Friday. The Red Sox jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first inning. In the top of the fourth Iván Herrera homered in Nolan Arenado and Alec Burleson. Then in the next inning Brendan Donovan would homer as well, bringing the Cards within one, this would be as close as St. Louis would get as they lost the game 13-9. Saturday’s game was postponed due to rain and set up a double header yesterday. In the first of two games it appeared as though the Cards were on track for a win, distancing themselves from the Red Sox by the top of the eight, 4-2. The Red Sox would battle back in the ninth, getting a walk-in to tie the game and force extra innings where the Red Sox were able to claim a 5-4 victory. In the second game, things would only get worse for the Red Birds, losing the game 18-7 and the series 3-0. The Cardinals are in Pittsburgh today to face the Pirates. The Kansas City Royals played the Baltimore Orioles on Friday and defeated them, on the back of a five run eighth, 8-2. On Saturday, Baltimore would defeat the Royals, 8-1. The lone score by the Royals was thanks to a Bobby Witt Jr sixth inning home run. Yesterday the Royals took the series 2-1, with a 4-1 victory. The Twins will be in Kansas City today for an evening game against the Royals at 6:40.

The Salem Golf Team Tuesday won the Salem Open at the Spring Creek Golf Club shooting a score of 201, beating Cabool by 19 strokes, Mountain Grove by 40 strokes and Viburnum by 58 strokes. Aiden Summers for Salem shot a 44 as did a player from Cabool, but Summers won the individual 1st place medal by winning the three-hole playoff. Daniel Black of Salem shot a 46 and took 3rd place in the tournament. The Salem Golf Tigers will be at Willow Springs on Tuesday, April 8th, for their next match.
The Salem Tiger Tennis Team matches with Houston and Willow Springs scheduled for Thursday were postponed and rescheduled for April 18th. The Tigers will be off until Monday when they host Waynesville at the Salem City Park at 4:00.
The Salem Tiger Baseball game with Potosi was postponed Thursday and no makeup date has been set. The Tigers are scheduled to play at Ava Monday at 4:30. Salem is 3-2-1 on the season.
The Salem Lady Tigers game with Ava Thursday was postponed and no makeup date has been set. The Lady Tigers are scheduled to be at Steelville this afternoon at 4:30, weather permitting. Salem is 5-3 on the year.
The Rolla Classic track meet scheduled for today has been cancelled. No makeup date has been established.
The St. Louis Cardinals will start a three-game series with the Boston Red Sox today starting at 12:15 this afternoon. They will also play Saturday at 2:15 and Sunday evening starting at 5:15. The Cardinals are off to a 4-2 start this season and averaging over 10 hits per game. All three games can be heard on KSMO Radio.
The Kansas City Royals will host Baltimore tonight, Saturday, and Sunday afternoons at Kaufmann Stadium.
The Blues played the Pittsburgh Penguins last night and after three periods the game was all tied up at 4-4. In overtime Robert Thomas scored his first goal on the night to give the Blues their eleventh win in a row by a score of 5-4. The Blues will host Colorado Saturday night at the Enterprise Center. Due to Cardinal baseball, the Blues game will be played on a delayed basis beginning with the pre-game show at 7:00.

The Salem Softball Tigers are scheduled to go on the road to play the Ava Lady Bears today, should the weather allow it, with the Varsity game set to begin at 4:30 and JV to follow.
The Salem Tiger Boys Tennis match scheduled with Potosi was cancelled yesterday due to inclement weather. No reschedule date has been released at this time. Today they are scheduled for a home doubleheader with Willow Springs and Houston. The Houston match will begin first at Noon with Willow Springs to follow at approximately 2:00.
The St. Louis Blues are back on home ice tonight as the Pittsburgh Penguins come to town. The last time the Blues and Penguins played it was March 13th when Pittsburgh defeated St. Louis by a score of 5-3. The Blues have not lost a game since. The St. Louis Cardinals wrapped up their series with the Los Angeles Angels yesterday, the two teams battled back and forth until the bottom of the eighth when the Cards blew the game wide open with a seven run inning, defeating the Angles by a score of 12-5, and taking the series 2-1. Ivan Herrera had himself a day by hitting three home runs and accounted for six runs batted in. The Cardinals next game will be Friday afternoon against the Boston Red Socks. The Kansas City Royals went into extra innings in their game versus the Milwaukee Brewers yesterday afternoon but it was a Brice Turang single that allowed the Brewers’ Oliver Dunn to score, defeating the Royals by a score of 3-2. The Royals have the day off today.
