Sports – Tuesday, March 16th, 2021

Salem High School spring sports is right around the corner as the Salem Varsity Track Tigers will be at St. James on Tuesday, March 23rd starting at 3:00. The Salem Baseball Tigers will play in the Four Rivers Classic next week with their first game at Sikeston on Wednesday, March 24th at 4:30. The SHS Golf Team will be at Mountain View on Monday, March 29th starting at 4:00, while the Salem Tennis team will be at Richland that same afternoon at 4:00.

Nolan Arenado had two hits and three RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals beat Washington Monday afternoon, 4-2. Tyler O’Neal also had two hits for St. Louis. John Gant went 4 2/3rd innings and gave up a two-run homer to Ryan Zimmerman. The Red Birds are 5-5-3 on the spring. The Cardinals will have the day off.

The Kansas City Royals beat the LA Dodgers Sunday night, 8-4 as Bubba Starling blasted a first-inning grand slam. Bobby Witt, Jr. also homered for the Royals on Sunday. Then on Monday, Bubba Starling hit another 1st inning home run driving in two runs and Danny Duffy threw four innings of no-hit ball as the Royals beat San Francisco Monday, 6-1 for their fifth straight win. Salvador Perez had a double and two RBI for the Royals. Kansas City will play the Seattle Mariners tonight in the desert.

The St. Louis Blues game with the Los Angeles Kings Monday night was postponed as the Kings were unable to leave the airport in Denver Colorado due to the heavy snow they received. The game will be made up at a later date. The Blues will be in Los Angeles Wednesday night to face the Kings starting at 8:30 on KSMO Radio.

Sports – Monday, March 15th, 2021

The Missouri Tigers lost to Arkansas Friday night in the second round of the SEC Tournament by the score of 70-64. Missouri was led in scoring by Xavier Pinson with 14 points followed by Dru Smith with 11. On Sunday, the Missouri Tigers were invited to the NCAA Tournament as the 9th seed in the West Division. They will face the #8 seeded Oklahoma Sooners in the 1st round game on March 20th. Missouri is 16-9 on the year.

The St. Louis Cardinals lost to the New York Mets Sunday, 7-5 as the Mets scored five runs in the 5th inning. On Saturday, the Cards beat Miami by the score of 6-4 by scoring three runs in the 9th inning. The Cardinals will play the Washington Nationals this afternoon at noon.

The Kansas City Royals blasted the Chicago Cubs on Saturday, 10-2 as Nick Pratto had two homers for KC as they improve to 10-3 on the spring. That is the best record in the Cactus League. The Royals will play San Francisco today.

The St. Louis Blues lost to the Vegas Golden Knights Friday night in overtime, 5-4 in their fourth straight overtime game. The Blues received goals from Ryan O’Reilly, David Perron, Vladimir Tarasenko and Zach Sanford in that contest. Then Saturday, the Blues lost 5-1 to the Golden Knights for their fourth straight loss. The Blues lone goal was scored by Sammy Blais. The Blues will be in Los Angeles tonight to face the Kings starting at 8:30 on KSMO Radio.

Sports – Friday, March 12th, 2021

The Missouri Tigers defeated the Georgia Bulldogs Thursday night in the SEC Tournament by the score of 73-70. Xavier Pinson scored 17 points to lead the Tigers while Dru Smith and Kobe Brown each added 16 for Missouri. Jeremiah Tilmon also finished with 10 points as Missouri will play Arkansas this evening at 6:00. Missouri is 16-8 on the year.

The St. Louis Cardinals had Thursday off and are scheduled to face Houston this afternoon at 4:55 and Miami tomorrow at 4:55. Each game can be heard on KSMO Radio.

Salvador Perez smacked a two-run homer in the 3rd inning which proved to be the difference as Kansas City beat Milwaukee Thursday, 4-2. The Royals will have today off before facing the Chicago Cubs Saturday afternoon and the Los Angeles Dodgers Sunday night.

The St. Louis Blues will host the Las Vegas Golden Knights tonight and Saturday night at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis. The Blues are currently in 2nd place in the West Division, but only five points separates the top six teams in the division. Sports – Thursday, March 11th, 2021

The Missouri Tigers are seeded 7th in the SEC Tournament. Missouri will play the Georgia Bulldogs tonight. Missouri is 15-8 on the year and 8-8 in the SEC Conference. The game tonight is at 6:00 and can be heard on KSMO radio beginning at 5:30. Should Missouri win, they would play at 6:00 Friday night.

Jack Flaherty pitched into the 4th inning and gave up a two-run homer to Starlin Castro as St. Louis lost to the Washington Nationals Wednesday, 3-2. Tommy Edman had two hits for the Cardinals who earlier in the day lost a “B” game to Washington 1-0. The Cardinals are 2-4-3 in the spring. The Cards will be off today before playing Houston Friday and Miami on Saturday.

Jorge Soler hit his second home run in as many days as Kansas City crushed a total of five homers on the day as they clobbered Cincinnati, 9-3 Wednesday. Ryan O’Hearn, Kyle Isbel, Anderson Miller and Sebastian Rivero all homered on the day, with Rivero finishing with four RBI on the day. The Royals will play Milwaukee Thursday afternoon in the desert.

Sports – Wednesday, March 10th, 2021

The New York Mets scored five runs in the 7th and came from behind to beat the St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday in spring training play, 5-3. Justin Williams hit a homer for the Cards as they fall to 2-3-3 on the spring. They will play Washington this afternoon. The Cards will be off Thursday before playing Houston Friday afternoon and Miami on Saturday afternoon.

The Seattle Mariners jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings and cruised to a 6-3 win over Kansas City Tuesday. The Royals improve to 7-3 this spring. The Royals will play Cincinnati this afternoon and Milwaukee Thursday afternoon in the desert.

Healthy Dent County and the Salem Park and Recreation Department will be hosting a co-ed volleyball tournament at the new Salem Community Center@The Armory gymnasium on Saturday, March 20th at 9:00. The cost is $150 for a six-member team and additional members can be added for $15.00. There must be at least one male or one female per team. Registration for the tournament is going on now and will last through the 17th. You can pickup a form at the Salem Community Center@The Armory or you can register your team online. Tyler O’Neil slugged a three-run double in the 1st inning and Delvin Perez tripled in two runs in a four-run 5th inning, but Cardinal pitching could not hold the lead and the St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins played to a nine-inning 7-7 tie. The Cardinals are 2-2-3 in the spring and play the New York Mets this afternoon.

The Kansas City Royals banged out 13 hits and pummeled the Oakland A’s Monday afternoon, 10-3. The Royals will play Seattle this afternoon in the desert.

Evander Kane’s overtime goal at the 41 second mark gave the San Jose Sharks a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Blues Monday night at San Jose. The Blues had goals from Niko Mikkola and Brayden Schenn as they went 4-0-2 on the West Coast road trip. They will be home to face the Las Vegas Golden Knights this Friday and Saturday nights.

Sports – Monday, March 8th, 2021

Tyler O’Neil slugged a three-run homer to break a 2-2, and then Austin Dean double home three more in the 8th inning which proved to be the margin of victory as St. Louis beat Houston, 8-5 Sunday. The Cardinals are 2-2-2m in the spring and play the Miami Marlins this afternoon.

Kelvi Gutierrez’ two run 9th inning homer topped off a three -run 9th inning rally giving the Kansas City royals a 4-3 win over san Diego Sunday. The Royals are 6-3 and play Oakland this afternoon.

David Perron, Ryan O’Reilly and Nathan Walker all scored in the 1st period Saturday night for St. Louis, but the Los Angeles Kings rallied to tie the game that they won in overtime on a goal by Adriene Kempke. The Blues will play San Jose tonight at 7:30 on KSMO.

The LSU Tigers ruined Senior Day at Missouri Saturday as they beat Mizzou, 86-80. Dru Smith had 17 points followed by Xavier Pinson with 14 and Kobe Brown who had 10 rebounds and 11 points. Missouri is 15-8 on the year and 8-8 in the SEC Conference. They are seeded 7th and will play Georgia Thursday night at 6:00.

Sports – Friday, March 5th, 2021

Houston scored five runs in the 1st and 6th innings en route to a 14-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals Thursday. The Cards had only three hits in the game. The Cardinals will play Houston today and the Washington Nationals this afternoon at 5:00 today. The later game will be on KSMO. The Red Birds will be off Saturday before they play Houston again Sunday afternoon at noon in a game that can be heard on KSMO.

Kansas City came back from a 3-2 deficit to score 1 run in the 7th inning and two more in the 8th inning to beat Cincinnati Thursday night, 5-3. The Royals will play the LA Angels this afternoon in pre-season action. They will also be in action this weekend as they will play San Francisco Saturday afternoon and San Diego on Sunday afternoon.

The St. Louis Blues won their third straight game beating the Anaheim Ducks Wednesday night, 3-2. The Blues had power play goals from Oskar Sunqvist, Zach Sanford and Brayden Schenn. The Blues will be at Los Angeles tonight and Saturday night starting at 8:00. You can hear both games on KSMO Radio.

Dru Smith scored 17 points to lead the Missouri Tigers past the Florida Gators Wednesday night, 72-70. Xavier Pinson and Mitchell Smith each added 14 points for Missouri who finished with five players in double figures. Missouri is 16-7 on the year and are 8-7 in the SEC Conference. Missouri will play LSU Saturday at 1:30 in a makeup game and you can hear it on KSMO Radio. The SEC Conference Tournament will be held next week.

Sports – Thursday, March 4th, 2021

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers season came to an end at the hands of the Lady Comets of Fatima by the score of 55-29. Fatima outscored Salem in the 2nd quarter, 12-1 and 12-7 in the 3rd quarter. Salem was led in scoring by Ashton Bowers with eight points followed by Tatum Hatridge with seven. Salem finishes the season with a 16-10 record.

John Nogowski hit a three-run homer and the St. Louis Cardinals scored three runs in three different innings and then four more in the 8th inning en route to a 14-9 win over the New York Mets. The Cardinals are 1-0-2 during the pre-season. The Cardinals will play the Houston at 5:00 today.

Kansas City scored three runs in the 2nd and 5th innings en route to a seven inning 6-5 win over the Chicago White Sox. The Royals will play Cincinnati tonight at 7:00 in Arizona.

The St. Louis Blues won their third straight game beating the Anaheim Ducks Wednesday night, 3-2. Zach Sanford, Brayden Schenn and Oskar Sundqvist each scored power plays goals in the win. The Blues will be at Los Angeles Friday and Saturday night.

Sports – Wednesday, March 3rd, 2021

The Owensville Dutchmen defeated the Salem Tigers Tuesday night in the 1st round of district play, 64-35. Lucas Morrison scored 11 points as Salem ended the season with a 3-21 record.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will be at Fatima in Westphalia tonight to face the #1 seeded Lady Comets at 6:00. Admission to that game will be $5.00. Masks are not required but they are requested and they do not have a voucher system for admission. Salem enters the game with a 17-9 record and Fatima is 18-7. Zach Sanford had two goals as the St. Louis Blues beat the Anaheim Ducks Monday night, 5-4. The Blues and Ducks will play again tonight at 8:00 on KSMO Radio.

St. Louis and Miami played to a seven-inning scoreless tie on Tuesday. The Cardinals will play the New York Mets today at noon.

The St. Louis Cardinals have released the names of Steve Carlton, Keith Hernandez, Matt Morris, Edgar Renteria and Lee Smith as the five players nominated for possible induction into the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame. Fans can view the Cardinals Hall of Fame ballot and cast their selections online at cardinals.com/HOF. Only the player with the most fan votes after voting concludes on Saturday, April 17th, will be selected to the Cardinals Hall of Fame. He will join the 2020 Class of Tom Herr, John Tudor and Bill White for induction into the Cardinals Hall of Fame during a ceremony on August 21st. The sole member of the 2021 Cardinals Hall of Fame Induction Class will be announced in early May.

The Royals lost the Chicago Cubs, 3-2 Tuesday and will play the Chicago White Sox this afternoon in Arizona starting at 2:00.
