Sports – Tuesday, May 27th 2025
The St. Louis Cardinals began their three game series against the Baltimore Orioles yesterday afternoon. The Orioles scored five runs before the Cardinals’ Pedro Pagés responded with a two run home run in the top of the fifth. The score would remain unchanged for the remainder of the game as the Orioles took the 5-2 victory. The Cardinals and Orioles will play again this afternoon on KSMO Radio, 1340 AM & 95.7 FM with pregame coverage set to begin at 4:40 and first pitch to follow at 5:35.
The Kansas City Royals hosted the Cincinnati Reds yesterday afternoon and it was all Reds through the first six innings as Cincinnati racked up five runs. A two run Salvador Perez homer got things going for the Royals, followed by a Nick Loftin sacrifice fly out bringing in Maikel Garcia. However the Reds would hold off the late rally, defeating the Royals, 7-4. Game two of the three game series starts tonight at 6:40.

Salem High School has announced the following SCA honors were awarded to the Salem Baseball program. Cayden Moody was selected as a 1st Team Outfielder, while 2nd Team Honors went to Pitcher Blake Edwards, Outfielder Kash Howard, and Infielder Roy Stevens. Catcher Sylis Dubois
was awarded Honorable Mention. Coach Tony Edwards was named Coach of the Year
The Salem Tiger Track & Field Team’s Luke Pryor and Evan Mendenhall qualified to represent the Salem Tigers at the MSHSAA Class 3 State Tournament this past Friday and Saturday. Evan Mendenhall competed in the 400 meter dash where he placed 7th. Luke Pryor competed in the 110 meter hurdles and finished 13th. The Salem High School MSHSAA competitive sports schedule for the 2024-2025 season is now complete.
Coach Jared Patterson’s Summer Boys Basketball Camp will begin soon! Camp will be held Tuesday June 3rd, through June 6th. Grades 3-5 will meet from 3:30 until 4:30, Grades 6-8 will be 4:30 until 6:00, and Grades 9-12 will meet from 6:00 until 8:00. Participants will learn the basic fundamentals of basketball. The fee is $30, which includes a T-Shirt and is due on the first day of camp. For more information call Coach Patterson at 573-247-9972. The St. Louis Cardinals and Arizona Diamondbacks wrapped up their series over the weekend that started on Friday. During Friday’s game the Cardinals scored all four of their runs in the sixth inning and held off a late Diamondback rally, claiming a 4-3 victory. On Saturday it was another close one with the Cardinals coming from behind late in the eighth inning and securing the 6-5 win. Yesterday in a back and forth affair the Red Birds got the sweep with a 4-3 win. The Cardinals start a new series with the Baltimore Orioles that you can listen to live on KSMO Radio this afternoon at 2:05.
The Kansas City Royals were on the road Friday in Minnesota and after an early run batted in during the first, the Royals bats fell silent while the Twins claimed a 3-1 victory. On Saturday the Royals would have a better offensive performance, batting in four runs on eleven hits but Minnesota outpaced Kansas City with five runs on nine hits. Yesterday afternoon the Royals avoided the sweep in extra innings when Maikel Garcia batted in Nick Loftin giving the Royals a 2-1 win. Kansas City is hosting the Cincinnati Reds this afternoon at 3:10.

The Salem Tiger Track & Field Team’s Luke Pryor and Evan Mendenhall qualified to represent Salem at the MSHSAA Class 3 State Tournament beginning today at the Adkins Stadium in Jefferson City. During the Class 3 District 5 Tournament Evan placed second in the 400 meter Dash and Luke Pryor placed third in the 100m Hurdles. Good luck Tigers!
The St. Louis Cardinals are hosting the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight live on KSMO Radio 1340 AM & 95.7 FM with pregame coverage beginning at 6:20 and first pitch at 7:15. They’ll play again on Saturday and Sunday with first pitch at 1:15 and live coverage on KSMO Radio starting at 12:20 in the afternoon.
The Kansas City Royals are traveling up north today to start a three game series with the Minnesota Twins. First pitch will be at 7:10. They’ll follow up with games on Saturday and Sunday at 1:10 in the afternoon.

Aiden Drew Summers of the Salem Tiger Golf Team competed in the MSHSAA Class 3 State Tournament and placed a respectable 33rd place of 92 individual competitors and third among his Freshman peers. Congratulations Aiden!
The St. Louis Cardinals played the Detroit Tigers yesterday afternoon and fell 5-1. A Willson Contreras single allowed Victor Scott II to score in the bottom of the sixth for the Cardinals only run of the game. The Cardinals lose the series 2-1 and have the day off today.
The Kansas City Royals wrapped up their road series versus the San Francisco Giants yesterday afternoon going up 8-2 after five innings and finishing the day with a 8-4 final. They’re heading to the Minnesota on Friday to play the Twins.

The St. Louis Cardinals took on the Detroit Tigers last night in game two of the three game series. The Tigers wasted no time getting on the board in the top of the first with a Kerry Carpenter home run. By the fifth the Cards were trailing 4-0 until Nolan Arenado hit a two run home run. In the next inning Ivan Herrera singled allowing Masyn Winn to come home. Victor Scott II would get home in the seventh on a sacrifice fly but that would be the last run of the night for the Red Birds as they lose a close one, 5-4.The series is now tied at one a piece and they’ll play once again this afternoon live on KSMO Radio 1340 AM & 95.7 FM with coverage starting at 11:20.
The Kansas City Royals took on the San Francisco Giants in another late night matchup yesterday. Drew Waters crossed home plate first in the third and to get the Royals on the board, however the Giants would soon respond scoring three runs that would be just enough to stop the Royals, 3-2. They’ll wrap up the three game series this afternoon with first pitch at 2:45.

The St. Louis Cardinals hosted the top ranked Detroit Tigers last night. Brendan Donovan batted in Lars Nootbaar early on in the bottom of the first to put the Cards on the board first. Then Ivan Herrera would score in the fourth off a wild pitch. Later in the seventh the Cardinals found themselves leading 5-0 when the skies opened up and a thunderstorm delayed the game for about 35 minutes. This did nothing to cool the heat coming off the Cardinals bats as they went on to score six more runs, defeating the Tigers, 11-4. They’ll play again tonight live on KSMO Radio 1340 AM & 95.7 FM with starting at 5:50.
The Kansas City Royals were in San Francisco to face the Giants last night. In the eighth inning a Vinnie Pasquantino home run broke the scoreless game as the Royals went on to defeat the Giants, 3-1. Game two is tonight, with first pitch at 8:45.

Announced Friday before the Salem High School Graduation was this year’s winners of the Tiger and Lady Tiger Awards for the outstanding male and female athletes for the 2024-2025 school year as voted by this year’s coaches. This year’s Tiger Award recipients were Cayden Moody and Reagan Dubois. Congratulations to both on their outstanding athletic achievements!!
Aiden Drew Summers of the Salem Boys Golf Team qualified for Individual play at MSHSAA Class 3 State Tournament and is heading to the Twin Hills Country Club in Joplin to compete today and tomorrow. Good luck Aiden!
The St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Royals played their three game series at Kauffman Stadium starting this past Friday. The Cards would get the first victory in dominant fashion batting in ten runs on thirteen hits all while holding the Royals to just three runs on nine hits. Following up on Saturday, Kansas City would get four hits but fail to turn any of those into runs scored. St. Louis would only have two hits on the night and score the game’s lone run off a Jordan Walker solo home run in the top of the sixth, giving the Cardinals a 2-0 series advantage. Yesterday the Royals would avoid getting sweeped by batting a run in the fourth and seventh inning. For the second straight game the Cardinals only run scored was off a solo home run, this time by Alec Burleson. The Cardinals next game will be at home tonight against the Detroit Tigers at 6:45. JV Meurer pitched a complete game four-hitter and had the game winning two-RBI double in the 5th inning as the St. James Baseball Tigers beat the Salem Baseball Tigers Thursday, 3-1, in the Class 4, District 4 Tournament. Meurer gave up the one earned run on an RBI single by Cayden Moody in the 6th inning as he struck out seven and walked one in getting the win. Blake Edwards went 4 2/3rds inning for Salem and took the loss giving up only one hit, but he walked three and two of those walks scored in the 5th inning. Salem finished the year with a 12-9-1 record and captured a share of the SCA Conference Championship. Congratulations to Coach Tony Edwards and the entire baseball team on a fine season. St. James will face Owensville Monday at St. Clair in the district semi-final.
Salem Lady Tiger Basketball Coach Cody Woody will be holding a Salem Lady Tiger Basketball Camp at the Salem High School Gym on Thursday, May 22nd; Friday, May 23rd, Tuesday, May 27th; and Wednesday, May 28th. The cost for the camp is $30 per athlete and each girl will receive a camp T-shirt. The morning camp for the 6th through 8th grade girls will be held from 8:00 to 10:00 in the morning; and the camp for girls in 9th through the 12th grade will be from 10:00 in the morning until 12:00 noon. Contact Coach Woody at cody.woody@salemr80.org if you have any questions. Girls will sign up and the camp fee is due when they attend the first day of camp at the high school gym.

The Licking Softball Lady Wildcats fell to the West County Lady Bulldogs Tuesday, 9-0, in the Class 2, District 3 Championship game at Potosi Tuesday. Licking finished the season with a 14-11 record. West County will face the Ava Lady Bears in the State quarterfinals for Class 2 Tuesday.
The St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies played in a doubleheader yesterday. In the first game all of the scoring action happened in the seventh when Jordan Walker single allowing Ivan Herrera to run home. The Phillies responded on a pair of singles, each driving in a run to give us the eventual 2-1 final. Going into the second game, both team’s batting would light up the scoreboard, each team would also get a five run inning but it was the Cardinals scoring 14 runs on 19 hits to put away the Phillies, 14-7. The Cardinals have the day off today as they get ready for the Kansas City Royals this Friday.
The Kansas City Royals faced the Houston Astros last night for the final game of a three game series. The Royals got on the board first in the top of the second with a Maikel Garcia solo home run. Kansas City would control the game until the bottom of the eighth when the Astors rallied back with a pair of runs scored, defeating the Royals, 3-4.

It took until the top of the fifth for a scoring run as Freddy Fermin singled on a ground ball allowing Maikel Garcia to score. Houston respond for the Astros in the sixth with a home run and again in the bottom of the ninth, defeating the Royals, 2-1. The Royals and Astros have one more game to play in the series tonight at 7:10 before Kansas City hosts the St. Louis Cardinals Friday evening.
