Since the program was started in 1992, Share the Harvest has provided nearly 4 million pounds of lean, healthy venison to help feed hungry Missourians. Share the Harvest is coordinated by MDC and CFM. It works by deer hunters donating their extra venison to more than 100 participating meat processors throughout the state who grind the deer meat into ready-to-use packages. The packaged venison is then given to local food banks and food pantries for distribution to Missourians in need of food assistance. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY YOUR WORLD TODAY!!

Today marks the 27th anniversary of the first edition of Your World Today that was published in 1991 that actually had a St. Patrick’s Day green shell. Your World Today was actually born from an idea in the late 1980’s to provide Salem with something daily to read from a conversation between Steve Smith of Smith Sign Company and KSMO”s General Manager Stan Podorski. It took over two years for the idea to become a reality with the help of businesses willing to take a chance on something new. The top story included the results for the opening day at Montauk, the alderman meeting agenda for that evening, some obituaries and sports news. Your World Today was distributed to 18 businesses that first day in Salem. Known also as the “little blue paper,” Your World Today is now available in over 40 locations in Salem, Bunker and at Echo Bluff. Two advertisers from that first edition are still advertising in YWT in the same page locations in the paper: C&E Auto and Roberts-Judson Lumber Company. In 1999, Your World Today was the first media to go online in Dent County allowing people to read the same content in the daily paper on their computers. KSMO Radio wants to thank all those advertisers over the years that have made it possible to continue provide Your World Today to the community absolutely FREE. All of us at KSMO Radio also want to thank everyone who has picked up and read Your World Today in town over the years, or who has read it online. Without you, Your World Today would not be here today!

Tomorrow morning at 6:30 at Montauk State Park, anglers throughout Missouri will be vying for position on the banks for the opening of the catch-and-keep trout fishing at Montauk State Park near Salem awaiting the starting pistol that Salem native Jim Freeman will fire. Similar starts will be held at Bennett Spring State Park near Lebanon, Roaring River State Park near Cassville, and the Maramec Spring Park near St. James. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) operates the trout hatcheries at all four parks. To help predict angler turnout on opening day, hatchery staff rely on permit records going back more than 80 years. Montauk, Bennett Spring, and Roaring River hatchery staff expect crowds of about 2,000 anglers at each location and Maramec Spring staff is planning for a crowd of about 1,000. Based on these predictions, hatchery staff will stock three trout per expected angler on opening day for a total of more than 21,000 fish averaging around a foot in length. The hatcheries will also stock a mix of "lunkers" ranging from three to 10 pounds. Trout anglers will need a daily trout tag to fish in Missouri's trout parks. Daily trout tags can only be purchased at each of the four trout parks. Missouri residents 16 through 64 and nonresidents 16 and older will need a fishing permit in addition to the daily tag. You can buy Missouri fishing permits from numerous vendors around the state, as well as online at mdc.mo.gov/buypermits, or through MDC’s free mobile apps, MO Hunting and MO Fishing. The catch-and-keep season at the trout parks runs through October 31st.
