A Funeral Mass for Leroy E. Kellermann of Salem, age 82, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Visitation will be held Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 at the James and Gahr Salem Chapel with a prayer service to follow visitation at 7:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen.

Funeral services for Anna “LaWanda” Smoot of St. James, age 86, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the First Church of God in St. James. Visitation will at the James and Gahr St. James Chapel Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00. Interment will be at the Howell Memorial Park in Pomona on Friday at 3:00. Memorials may be made to the St. James High School Music Department of the St. James Garden Club.

Funeral arrangements for Keith Knudson of Rolla, age 57, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking. Visitation will be held Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary Chapel of Rolla. Interment will be in the Cavaness Cemetery in Licking.

Memorial visitation for Sally Ann Elwood of Salem, age 61, will be held Saturday from 11:00 to 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. There will be no interment. Memorials may be made to the American Legion Womens Auxiliary.

Funeral services for Ronal “Ronnie” Mason of Viburnum, age 76, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 Friday. Interment will be in the Lower Indian Creek Cemetery in Viburnum. Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church in Viburnum.

Graveside services for Vernon Earl Ray Sr. of Salem, age 70, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Patterson Cemetery and a Celebration of Life at 3:00 at the Wilson Family Center in Salem. Interment will be in the Patterson Cemetery.

The Salem Baseball Tigers home opener on Tuesday was postponed by wet grounds and no makeup date has been set. The Tigers are scheduled to be at Potosi Thursday at 4:30 to face the Trojans.

The Salem Tennis Tigers defeated Richland Monday in their season opening match, 9-0. The JV won as well, 5 matches to 2. The Tennis Team will be back in action on Thursday at home against Willow Springs at 4:00.

Matt Adams for the Cardinals hit a three-run homer in the 4th inning and Lucas Duda of the New York Mets also hit a three-run homer in the 4th inning and that is all the offense there was in the game that ended 3-3 after nine innings. Adam Wainwright got the start for the Cards and went five innings giving up the three runs on four hits. The Cardinals take on Washington this afternoon.

Brandon Moss for the third straight game and also had a double to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 7-4 win over the Chicago White Sox. Nathan Karns pitched six innings and gave up a run in the win. The Royals will play the Texas Rangers this afternoon.

The St. Louis Blues will be in Arizona tonight starting at 8:30 on KSMO to face the Coyotes as they are just five points away from clinching a playoff spot. The Blues trail Nashville for the 3rd place by a point in the standings and currently sit in the 8th and final playoff spot.

On Monday, March 20th, the Dent County Health Center Board of Trustees met at the health center. Administrator Kendra Mobray reported the “Billion Steps Challenge” is nearing completion and Dent County has reported over 65 million steps thus far. The upcoming “Walk, Waddle, or Run 5K” race will begin at 9:00 in the morning Saturday, April 1st from the SBU parking lot. Staff from the Health Center took registrations for the race at the Girl’s Night Out event. ‘Get Fit in Dent County’ placemats are complete and available at the Health Center at no cost. Placemats includes a map of available healthy resources in Dent County such as walking/hiking trails, fresh produce, physical activity, etc. Placemats were handed out at Girl’s Night Out. Influenza activity in Dent County has decreased over the last couple weeks, but they are still receiving reports of confirmed influenza. The nurses at the Health Center encourage individuals to stay home if you have a fever and would also like to remind everyone that hand washing is the most effective way to reduce the spread of illness. Mobray reviewed the Health Center’s Administrative Manual with the Board which they approved. Mobray discussed with the Board the need for an audit for the years 2015 and 2016. The board agreed to an audit by Maloney, Wright & Robbins. Mobray will keep the Board updated as to the progress of the audit. The next regular board meeting date was set for Monday, April 17 at 5:00 p.m. at the Health Center.

The Smile Mobile will be in town today through Friday. They will be parked on the east side of the Salem Community Center @The Armory parking lot. They will be seeing adult patients from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm today and Thursday and from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm on Friday. The Smile Mobile is known for going school to school providing dental care to children for free. In 2014, the Your Community Health Center in Rolla received the Smile Mobile from the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. They received a grant to update and remodel with the goal of not only helping the children in the surrounding communities but the adults as well. They also started a free standing dental clinic located in Rolla. The Smile Mobile and Your Community Health Center help meet the needs of the community by finding affordable ways to keep citizens healthy, as they accept Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance and self pay based on income levels. They also provide services that help those needing assistants to fill out and turn in the proper paper work. If you have a dental need and would like to be seen there are still a few appointment times open this Friday in Salem. To setup an appointment for the Smile Mobile or services at their office, you can contact them at 573-426-6734. If you were unable to make an appointment but still have a dental need walk-ins may be accepted if time is available. The Smile Mobile hopes to be back in Salem this summer to help even more people in the community.

The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams presented the CART sales tax receipt for March in the amount of $51,738.43. According to Williams, the CART receipts are up year-to-date by $5,384.33, which is a 3.39% increase. Williams went on to say that the amount of CART taxes for March of 2016 was $52,091.79. Guthrie Skaggs was in to discuss planned driveway improvements at his home on Dent County Road 5013. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading would be done on Dent County roads 5480, 5440, 6410, 6303 and 6350, while materials would be hauled to county roads 5460, 6435 and 6400. He went on to say that a man was stockpiling three-eighths inch chips for Durapatcher use and brush was being cut on county road 5680. Purcell added that he attended a Tourism Committee meeting Monday where two applications and one reimbursement request were approved. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2010, 3250, 3190, 5320 and 5325, while materials would be added to county roads 4480, 3250 and 3190. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported he attended the GRO Steering Committee meeting Tuesday evening. He said that the group had various projects planned including some downtown landscaping and also the possibility of street lighting upgrades. Skiles said the Internship Program has ten students enrolled for the 1 to 2 hour experience this year. He noted that for next year around 50 students are interested and have signed up. Skiles said that any business with an interest in participating in the program should contact Principal Marty Anderson at the High School or City Administrator Ray Walden. He added that Sherman Odom attended the GRO meeting and explained he has developed a small business incubator with 10 office spaces for rent in the Crossroads Shopping Center. The spaces will provide a desk, high-speed internet as well as file cabinets and should be of benefit for small scale entrepreneurs needing an operational base. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that absentee voting was continuing in her office. The next meeting of the Dent County Commission will be Monday morning in the Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The deck replacement of the bridge over Crooked Creek south of Cherryville on Highway 19 is scheduled to begin on Monday, March 27th. The bridge and road will be closed until early June. Signs will placed that will guide motorists along a detour through the area. MoDOT appreciates the patience of motorists while the work takes place. The Salem Police Department released reports involving assault, shoplifting, property damage and theft. On Tuesday, March 14th at 1:51 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to the Salem High School in reference to an assault. The report revealed a 14-year old male juvenile of Salem had assaulted a 14- year old male juvenile also of Salem. He was detained for assault and released to a parent. The report will be forwarded to the juvenile office. That same afternoon at 3:21, an officer was contacted by a Casey’s General Store employee in reference to shoplifting. The report led to the arrest of a 35-year old Salem male for stealing merchandise valued at $6.79. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. That night at 7:18, an officer was sent to the Mobil Convenience Store located on Highway 19 in reference to a shoplifter. The report led to the arrest of a 35-year old male of Salem for stealing merchandise valued at $1.59. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Wednesday, March 15th at 1:12 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to the Salem High School in reference to property damage. The report revealed an 18-year old male of Salem had slammed a door knocking a hole in the wall while in the office for a conduct issue. The valued of the damage is estimated at approximately $200. He was taken into custody for property damage, issued a summons to appear in court and released. That same afternoon at 1:18, an officer was sent to Classic Joyride on Craig Drive in reference to a theft. The report revealed that someone unknown stole a U-haul two wheel car dolly valued $1,500. The Dent County Extension Council will be conducting a meeting on Monday, March 27th at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory, 1200 West Rolla Road beginning at 5:30 pm. They will be discussing the quorum as well as other topics.

Sports – March 24th, 2017

Jon Arzt pitched a complete game as the Salem Tigers won the makeup game against Cuba yesterday at the Houston Tournament, 4-2. In the second game, Salem scored 11 runs in the 3rd inning en route to a 13-1 win over the Licking Wildcats. Salem is 3-0 in the tournament and will face Houston today at 2:00 in a game moved up in attempt to beat the rain.

Magnus Paajarvi scored a pair of goals to lead the St. Louis Blues to a 4-1 victory Thursday night over the Vancouver Canucks. The victory was the fourth in a row and ninth in 10 games for the Blues who held onto third place in the Central Division. Goalie Jake Allen got the win, his seventh in his last eight games. He allowed a total of 10 goals in those eight games. Kyle Brodziak and Alex Pietrangelo also scored for the Blues who will play the Calgary Flames this Saturday at 5:30 on KSMO.

The St. Louis Cardinals scored runs in the 6th and 7th innings to break open a 3-3 tie and went on to beat the Miami Marlins by the score of 5-3. Adam Wainwright went four innings and gave up three runs although only one was earned. Kolten Wong drove in two runs for the Cardinals while Patrick Wisdom went 2-2 and had an RBI. St. Louis will face Miami this Saturday and Sunday at 11:45 on KSMO Radio.

The Kansas City Royals were off yesterday and they will be back in action today as they will face the Seattle Mariners in Cactus League play.

An accident happened Sunday morning at 10:15 in Phelps County on Route BB about two miles south of St. James that took the lives of a husband and wife from St. James. According to the highway patrol report, a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado driven southbound by 19-year old Thomas Shipman of Ft. Knox, Kentucky, crossed the center line of the roadway. In an effort to avoid the Silverado, 85-year old William Peterman of St. James driving a 2007 GMC Sierra northbound, crossed the centerline as well but both vehicles struck head on. The wife of William Peterman, 80-year old Faith Peterman, was transported by the St. James Ambulance to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead by Dr. Fursa at 11:10 Sunday morning. William Peterman was flown by Mercy Lifeline to the University Hospital in Columbia where he was pronounced dead at 11:57 Sunday morning by Dr. Bartels. Shipman did not report any injuries from the accident. Everyone involved in the accident was wearing seat restraints. Both vehicles were totaled and removed from the scene by Spurgeon’s Towing.

An accident happened Friday afternoon at 2:20 in Maries County on Highway 28 about two miles west of Belle. According to the highway patrol report, a 1998 Chevy Blazer driven eastbound by 27-year old Brandi Chappel of Boss, went off the right side of the roadway and struck a guardrail. Chappel and a passenger in the vehicle, 20-year old Gerald Carroll of Vienna, both suffered minor injuries and was transported to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. Chappell and Carroll were wearing seat restraints when the accident occurred. The Chevy sustained moderate damage wand was removed from the scene by Owen’s Towing.

An accident happened Saturday morning at 11:47 on Highway 63 about 3/10ths of a miles north of Osage County Road 501. According to the highway patrol report, a 2007 Chevy Silverado driven northbound by 58-year old Patricia Lauberth of Freeburg, was slowing to make a right turn into a private drive, when the Chevy was struck from behind by a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven northbound by 45-year old Richard Martin of Rolla. Suffering minor injuries from the Jeep was 35-year old Heather Martin of St. James while Lauberth also suffered minor injuries. Both women refused treatment at the scene and would seek their own medical treatment. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint when the accident happened. The Grand Cherokee was totaled and left at the scene while the Chevy had minor damage was driven from the scene.

The Missouri Department of Conservation and the Conservation Federation of Missouri thank the 4,280 Missouri deer hunters who donated 198,277 pounds of venison to the state’s Share the Harvest program this past deer season. The donated deer meat will help feed hungry Missourians all around the state. The Share the Harvest Program is coordinated by the Missouri Department of Conservation and Conservation Federation of Missouri It works when deer hunters donate their extra venison to participating meat processors throughout the state who grind the deer meat into one-pound packages. The packaged venison is then given to food banks and food pantries for distribution to Missourians in need of food assistance. The Share the Harvest coordinates the efforts of thousands of hunters, more than 100 participating meat processors, numerous local supporting organizations, and about a dozen statewide sponsors. Since the program was started in 1992, Share the Harvest has provided about 3.7 million pounds of lean, healthy venison to help feed hungry Missourians. Processing fees are covered entirely or in part by numerous local sponsors, along with statewide sponsors that include: MDC, CFM, Shelter Insurance, Bass Pro Shops, Missouri Chapter Safari Club International, Missouri Chapter National Wild Turkey Federation, Midway USA Inc., Missouri Food Banks Association, United Bowhunters of Missouri, Missouri Trappers Association, the Missouri Hunter Education Instructors Association, and the Wal-mart Foundation.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tiger’s defense could not slow down Breanna Diestelkamp as she scored 31 points and added 10 rebounds to lead the 6th seeded Owensville Dutchgirls past the 3rd seeded Salem Lady Tigers Saturday at the School of the Osage gymnasium, 56-49. The Lady Tigers offense struggled shooting in the game starting out 0 for 11 from the 3-point stripe in the 1st half. Foul trouble also hampered the Lady Tigers who fell behind 21-18 at halftime and never could get a roll. Salem’s season ends with an 18-8 record.

Logan Woolf was a one-man wrecking crew in the 1st quarter netting 15 points, and with the help of Jakob Happel, those two had 32 of Salem’s first half points and the Tigers led 44-26 at halftime. But Owensville outscored Salem in 2nd half, 40-25, but it was too little too late, as Salem won 69-66 and move on to face the Jeff City Helias Crusaders Tuesday night at 5:30. The St. Louis Cardinals started their spring training games on Saturday and lost in a home run fest to the Maimi Marlins, 8-7 Saturday. On Sunday, the Cardinals had 13 hits and beat Miami, 7-4. Yadier Molina and Eric Fryer each drove in two runs for the Red Birds who will have split squad games with Boston and Washington.

The Kansas City Royals beat the Texas Rangers Saturday in the spring training opener, 7-4, but then lost on Sunday by the score of 6-4. The Royals will be facing Seattle today.

Deandre Burnett scored 28 points, Breein Tyree added 15 and Mississippi beat Missouri 80-77 on Saturday. Frankie Hughes led Missouri with 22 points while Jordan Barnett scored 14. Missouri, who is now 7-21 on the season and 2-14 in the SEC Conference, dropped its 34th straight road game. they will host Texas A&M Tuesday afternoon at 5:30. KSMO will NOT air the game due to the Salem Tigers district basketball game and Blues Hockey.

Artem Anisimov scored with 5:20 left in the third period to lift the Chicago Blackhawks over the St. Louis Blues 4-2 on Sunday night for their fourth straight win and ninth in their last ten. Magnus Paajarvi and Alex Pietrangelo scored for the St. Louis Blues, who played their first game following their bye week and lost their third straight. The Blues will host Edmonton tomorrow night. KSMO will join the broadcast immediately after Salem Tiger Basketball.

On Friday, Blues Center Patrik Berglund agreed to a 5-year, $19.25 million contract extension with the Blues. Berglund has been with the Blues since being drafted by the club in the first round (No. 25 overall) in 2006. The Vasteras, Sweden-native is one of just 16 players to appear in at least nine seasons with the Blues. He has accumulated 286 points, including 145 goals and 141 assists, in 615 regular season games. Berglund has also posted 10 goals and 12 assists in 49 career playoff appearances.

The Dent County Commissioners met Thursday morning for their regular meeting in the Dent County Courthouse. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles was unable to attend so Dent County Clerk Angie Curley appointed Associate Commissioner Gary Larson as Acting Presiding Commissioner. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams was in with the February CART receipts which were $57,273.71. She said the year-to-date receipts are up $5,737.69, which is an increase of 5.39%. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5080, 5085, 5015, 5070, 5630 and 5610, while brush would be cut on county roads 6570 as well as 6575, and materials would be added to county roads 5130 and 5170. He reported that Monday evening he attended the Dent County Tourism Committee meeting where three proposals were reviewed and approved and three requests for reimbursement were approved. Purcell said that on Tuesday he, along with Road Foreman Rusty Chamberlain and crew member Rodney Atkinson met with Forest Service Representatives at the prospective site for the new Cooley Bridge. The group decided where test holes were to be dug to determine location of bedrock to place the bridge foundation on. Purcell went on to say that Tuesday evening he attended the South Central Missouri Community Action Agency (SCMCAA) meeting. The Agency responsibilities include the Headstart and Earlystart Programs, which are funded to serve 680 children in its seven counties. Some of the services provided by the agency include immunizations, physical exams and dental exams. Purcell said the local contact number is (573) 729-3500, plus weatherization and utility assistance needs might be available by calling (573) 325-4255 and ask for Todd. He noted that SCMCAA, which has a 9 million dollar budget, was recently audited and there were no findings or recommendations for changes. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4300, 4040, 2330 and 3330, while brush would be cut on county road 3370, plus two men would be hauling materials to county roads 4353, 2330 and 3130. He re-stated the sign problem that Commissioner Purcell had brought to the forefront at previous meetings. Larson said that during this week one grader operator had reported 9 missing signs and another 6 missing signs in District Two alone. Larson also noted that after rains that if there is a funeral at one of the county cemeteries the Commissioners would like to be notified if the roads to the cemetery need special attention prior to the services. He said they currently try to foresee those needs, however if there is a problem the Commissioners would appreciate notification. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that bills were being approved by the Commissioners and that the last day to register for the April election is March 8th. She also wanted to inform voters that they can go online to find their voting location and obtain a sample ballot. Curley said that one source is the Secretary of State’s website at www.sos.mo.gov. Once on the website click on Elections and Voting, then click on View Candidates and Issues, then click on Voter Outreach and input the voters address. She said that voters could also go to www.salemmo.com, click on Dent County tab, and then click on County Clerk tab. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning in the Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

This month, the Salem Area Arts Council will be hosting their monthly community acoustic jam at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center (ONCRC) in Salem Saturday starting at 6:30 p.m.  Musicians and listeners of all ages and talents and interests are invited. The St. Louis Cardinals spring training games begin tomorrow when they face the Miami Marlins starting at 11:45. Luke Weaver will get the start for the Cardinals Saturday. The Red Birds will also play Sunday at 11:45 against Miami and both games can be heard on KSMO Radio.

The Missouri Tigers will be at Ole Miss Saturday afternoon starting at 2:30. Due to the Salem District Basketball games, the Missouri game will not be heard on KSMO radio. Missouri is 7-20 on the year and 2-13 in the SEC.

The St. Louis Blues will travel to Chicago Sunday to face the Black Hawks starting at 6:00 with the pre-game show on KSMO with the puck dropping at 6:30. The Blues have 67 points and lead Nashville by two points for 3rd place in the Central Division, but the Predators have played one less game than St. Louis.

Funeral services for Gregory Johnson of Lesterville formerly of Salem, age 65 will be held toay at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Crocker Assisted Living for a bench in honor of Greg Johnson.

Funeral services for Verla Emma (Barton) Cookson of Viburnum, age 74, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be today from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Barton Cemetery in Oates.

Memorial services for Twyla Fenton of Ozark, formerly of Salem, age 73, will be held Saturday at 3:00 at the Ozark General Baptist Church in Springfield. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 6:00 at the church. There will be no interment. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
