According to news release received from John McCulloch, superintendent of the Salem R-80 school district, Salem High School assistant volleyball Coach Kristi Steelman has been named interim head volleyball coach and Kristy Bermudez has been named assistant volleyball coach for the remainder of the 2019 season. The release stated that the move was made by the administration who felt the volleyball program needed to move in a different direction of the remainder of the season.
Center Fielder Chloe Bonner’s three-run homer capped off an 11-run 2nd inning as the Salem Tigers blasted the Ava Bears, 16-1 Tuesday at the Salem City Park in three innings to go to 4-1 on the year. Bonner finished with two hits and four RBI while Savannah Manthey had a double and single and drove in five runs in the game. The Salem JV Tigers also won by the score of 4-3 and they are also 4-1 on the year. Salem will play Vienna Thursday at 5:00 at the Salem City Park. The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers lost to Eminence Tuesday night in two straight games: 20-25 and 16-25. The JV Tigers beat the Lady Red Wings in three games as they lost the first game, 20-25, won the second game, 25-14 and won the third game, 15-8. The Lady Varsity Tigers are 0-3 while the JV is 1-1 on the year. The Lady Volleyball Tigers will face West Plains Monday night in Salem starting at 6:00.
Michael Wacha gave up a two-run home run to Nolan Arenado in the 1st inning and the Cardinals only received five hits off of Rockies’ starter Chi Chi Gonzalez in their 2-1 loss Tuesday night. Dakota Hudson will pitch for the Red Birds at Colorado tonight starting at 6:45 on KSMO Radio.
Five homers were hit in total by the end of the second inning as Eloy Jimenez’s first career grand slam was the only homer not of the solo variety in that quintet. Jimenez connected off Royals starter Jakob Junis as Chicago beat the Royals, 7-3. The Royals and White Sox will face each other again on Chicago’s south side tonight.
