Sports – Monday, April 6th, 2026
The Salem Tiger Tennis Team Thursday traveled to Willow Springs for matches with the Bears, as well as the Houston Tigers. After Willow Springs beat Houston, 8-1 in the first match, the Salem Tennis Tigers played Houston and also beat them, 8-1. In the final match of a full day of tennis, which featured a three-hour rain delay, Salem edged past the Willow Springs Bears, 5-4. The Tigers are 5-0 on the year, and they will be at Waynesville today to face the Tigers starting at 4:00. Waynesville is 5-2 on the year.
The Salem Baseball Tigers will host Ava today in each teams first SCA Conference game of the year at the SHS Baseball Field Complex starting at 4:30. Salem is 2-4 on the year and Ava comes into the game with a 4-4 record. That game can be heard on KSMO Radio (AM 130 and FM 95.7) and video streamed on KSMO Media (ksmoradio.com, the KSMO Stream Facebook Page and KSMO YouTube Page) starting around 4:15 with Tiger Talk and Coach Tony Edwards.
The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will be at Houston today for an SCA Conference game against the Lady Tigers starting at 4:30. Salem enters the game with a 4-3 overall record and 0-1 in the SCA Conference.
The Owensville Middle School Open will be held today for middle school track and field participants from the Dent County Schools. According to the MSHSAA website, the girls competition will be at 4:00 and the boys at a time to be determined.
The Cardinals were able to avoid the sweep in their first series loss of the season against the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers issued the Cardinals their first shutout on Friday, 4-0. Saturday afternoon the Cardinals scored six runs on the day that included a Jordan Walker grand slam home run! However Detroit managed eleven runs on twelve hits for the 11-6 victory over St. Louis. Last night, Iván Herrera’s two-run single in the top of the fifth was the deciding play for the 5-3 Cardinal win. Tonight the Cardinals will be in our nation’s capital to face the Nationals. The game is scheduled to start at 5:45, but you can listen to a delayed broadcast of this game on KSMO Radio, following Salem Tiger Baseball.
The St. Louis Blues were in Denver last night facing the league leading Avalanche. In a very close game throughout, the Blues and Avalanche found themselves tied up at two going into the third period when, with just under three minutes to go, Robert Thomas scored his third goal of the night as the Blues upset the Avalanche 3-2. It won’t be long before these two teams face each other again tomorrow night in St. Louis at 7:00. You can listen to this game on KSMO Radio on a delay following St. Louis Cardinals baseball.

MoDOT has released the following road work planned for the week of today through Sunday within Dent County: On Highway 19, culvert replacement is planned from today through Thursday from Route TT to Route VV in Crawford County. On Route W, pothole patching is planned from today through Wednesday. On Route EE, pothole patching is planned Wednesday and Thursday. Route B at the bridge over Dry Creek remains closed, due to deterioration near one of the supporting structures. Keep in mind that weather conditions may postpone scheduled work. Many projects will include lane closures which could cause delays. Other moving operations such as pothole patching, brush cutting, and pavement repairs continue in various locations. Motorists should travel with care and be alert for slow-moving equipment.
The Sleep in Heavenly Peace, or SHP, Dent County Chapter will be holding its community meeting today from 5:30 to 6:30 in the afternoon at the Salem Armory Walden Conference Room, with discussions including events, needs, and more. Updates from the local chapter can be found on its Facebook page at facebook.com/shpdentco. SHP is an international non-profit 501(C)(3) organization that builds, assembles and delivers new beds to children in need who do not have a bed. Anyone can apply for their child on the SHP website at shpbeds.org. At the top of the page, click “Apply for a Bed.” Volunteers are welcomed from all ages. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reminds Missourians interested in hunting black bear and/or elk in the state this fall that they need to apply for a limited number of hunting permits for each in May. MDC will offer 2,000 permits to harvest up to a maximum of 60 black bears across three MDC black-bear management zones in the southern part of the state during the 2026 Missouri black-bear hunting season, Oct. 17th through Oct. 30th. MDC increased the number of available permits from 600 to 2,000 and increased the harvest quota limit from 40 to 60 bears to expand hunting opportunities. Missouri has an estimated population of about 1,100 bears. Get more information on black-bears and bear hunting in Missouri at mdc.mo.gov/hunting-trapping/species/bear. MDC will again also offer five permits to hunt bull elk in Missouri this fall with at least one permit designated for qualifying landowners who own property in Carter, Reynolds, or Shannon counties and the remaining permits for qualifying residents. MDC has designated the 2026 elk archery portion to run Oct. 17th through Oct. 25th, and the elk firearms portion to run Dec. 12th through Dec. 20th. The Salem Community Garden will host a presentation on Pest Control Thursday night at 6:00 behind the Salem United Methodist at 801 East Scenic Rivers Blvd. Everyone is welcome to attend the presentation event, and you do not have to have a plot to participate. Plots are still available and your first plot is free. Accessible garden beds are also available. Funeral services for Dorothy Shanor will be held at 12:00 noon Saturday in the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 11:00 Saturday morning until service time in the chapel.
Funeral services for Julia Ann Batstone of Salem, age 60, will be held at 11:00 Monday morning at the Salem First Baptist Church. Visitation will be held from 10:00 Monday morning until service time at the church. Burial will be in the Sligo Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Sligo Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.
Funeral Services for James “Jim” Mabe of Steelville, age 66, will be Monday at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.
Funeral service for Eileen Gibson, age 84, of St. James, will be held Monday afternoon at 2:00 in the St. James Chapel of the James & Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be held at the Chapel prior to the service beginning at 1:00. Interment will follow at the St. James Cemetery.

On Tuesday at the Salem Open, the Salem Tiger golf team played very well with all 5 golfers finishing in the top 10. Aiden Summers took 1stplace overall shooting a 38. Other Tigers finished in the top five were Daniel Black who shot a 42 securing 3rd place overall, Brasyn Hampton who shot a 46 capturing 4th place, and Ben Owen who finished with a 47 which was good enough for 5th place overall. The Tigers’ Walker Smith shot a 53 which placed him in 9th place overall. The next meet for Salem will be at Owensville Monday at 3:45.
The Ava Lady Softball Bears batted around in two different innings and beat the Salem Lady Tigers, 14-6. Salem trailed 6-0 at one point, then rallied to close the gap to 7-6 before Ava hit Salem with a five-spot in the 6th inning to break the game open. Bailey Mahurin had two hits and two RBI for Salem while Shaylee Thomas and Alexis White each had two hits and an RBI in the game. The Salem Lady Tigers will be at Houston for an SCA Conference game starting at 4:30 Monday. Salem is 4-3 on the year and 0-1 in the SCA Conference.
The Salem Tigers Baseball game with Potosi Thursday was postponed due to wet grounds and no makeup date has yet been set. The Tigers will host Ava Monday in SCA Conference play beginning at 4:30. Salem will host Ava Monday afternoon at 4:30 at the SHS Baseball Field Complex.
The Rolla Classic Track Meet schedule for today has been postponed. It will be rescheduled at a date yet to be determined.
The St. Louis Cardinals, fresh off a pair of series wins over the Rays and Mets, are heading to Detroit to face the Tigers today. You can listen to this game live on KSMO Radio 1340 AM & 95.7 FM with pregame coverage starting at 11:15 this morning, first pitch will cross home plate just past noon at 12:10. Over the weekend the Cards will wrap up the three game series with another afternoon game tomorrow at 12:10. Game three will be Sunday evening at 6:20. Each of these games will be live on KSMO Radio.
With the playoff window narrowing the St. Louis Blues will have to be almost perfect to enter postseason play. They’ll face the Anaheim Ducks tonight in the Honda Center with puck drop at 9:00. You can listen to the game live on KSMO Radio with the preskate coverage set to begin at 8:30. Sunday night, the Blues will be in Colorado to face the Avalanche, this game will also be on KSMO Radio but it will have a delayed start to follow St. Louis Cardinals Baseball at approximately 9:30.

The Dent County Commission held its meeting Thursday morning at the courthouse. With District Two Commissioner Jimmy Williams absent and crew members out in observance of Good Friday and Easter weekend, road reports from District One Commissioner Keith Green were minimal. Green reported that crew members have been busy grading this week in the conservation area and installing a culvert pipe, around County Road 5150. Meanwhile, Presiding Commissioner Gary Larson reported that he attended the Meramec Regional Community Foundation meeting in St. James, in which several scholarships were disseminated to students. The foundation requested names of businesses in Salem, along with businesses across the region, and will be reaching out to see if the businesses would be willing to donate toward trade scholarships. Bills have been reviewed by commissioners and approved. Curley has balanced with Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams on all monthly accounts for the month of March. The Dent County Clerk’s office will be open on Saturday from 8:00 in the morning to noon for voting. On April 6th, Monday, the courthouse will be open for voting from 8:00 in the morning to 5:00 in the afternoon. On April 7th, Tuesday, voters will have to go to their individual polling locations, and those locations will be open from 6:00 in the morning to 7:00 in the evening. If unsure of where your voting location is, call the Dent County Clerk’s office at 573-729-4144. When voting, please remember to bring your photo ID. Health Department Administrator Zach Moser discussed with commissioners the health fair, which will be from 7:00 in the morning to 1:00 in the afternoon May 1st at the Dent County Health Center. He also shared that there will be an upcoming Awards Gala April 24th, in which awards will be presented and money raised for services at the Dent County Health Center. Moser shared that currently there are three cases of Legionnaires Disease within the county. The next meeting of the commission will be Monday morning at 9:00 in the courthouse, and the meeting is open to the public.
Prosecutor Andrew M. Curley and Sheriff Bob Wells presented to Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams a check in the amount of $469.85 for the sale of firearms in the cases of State v. Michael Munson, State v. Stephen Mock, and State v. Jessica Carnell. These firearms were seized in connection with the arrest and prosecution of each criminal case. The proceeds are to be used for the benefit of Dent County. In addition to the criminal conviction, the seizure and sale of the firearms is authorized by Missouri law as a punishment and deterrent to persons that illegally own/possess/use firearms.
Several community Easter celebrations are planned for this weekend. The Grace Community Church located at 600 Water Street will be hosting a community Easter Egg Hunt this Saturday at 1:00 in the afternoon to 4:00 in the field behind the church. This event is for ages 2 through sixth grade. The First Baptist Church of Salem will be holding its community-wide Easter Egg Hunt this Saturday at 11:00 in the morning, for ages up to third grade. Custard by C-Sue located at 500 East 4th Street will also be holding a free Easter Egg Hunt at 2:00 in the afternoon this Saturday. The Salem Memorial Hospital Board of Directors held its regular meeting Tuesday evening at 7:00 in the Doctor’s Library at the hospital. After approving the agenda and the previous meeting’s minutes, the board discussed bids for a new transit ambulance and box remount. Representatives from Pinnacle Emergency Vehicles and TESCO Specialty Vehicles were present at the meeting. After much deliberation, the board approved the transit ambulance bid from Pinnacle in the amount of $167,820, which includes a three-year/100,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and a five-month lead time. The board also approved the box remount bid from TESCO in the amount of $118,681, which includes a 12-month labor-only warranty and a 90–120 day lead time. Financing for the transit ambulance will go through Pinnacle for 60 months at 4.89% interest, and the box remount will be financed through the Bank of Salem at 6% interest for 60 months. Neither option carries early payoff penalties. Medical staff privileges were approved for providers across six departments, and new privileges were granted to five new providers in Teleradiology, Psychiatry Long-Term Care, and Pathology. Policies and procedures and departmental manuals were approved for Infection Prevention, the Emergency Department, and 340B. The Quality Assurance Performance Improvement Plan for 2026 was also approved. In her report, Chief Executive Officer Brooke Bollman highlighted updates on the hospital’s recruitment efforts, strategic planning, Revenue Cycle, and the potential for service line growth, as well as upcoming hospital events in May. For the month of February, the hospital recorded 55 inpatient and four Swing-bed admissions. There were 1,027 outpatient registrations, 1,319 cardiopulmonary procedures, 564 Emergency Room visits, and 192 ambulance runs; these numbers remained consistent with the previous month. The Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation department collected its first revenue in February, totaling $2,646.00. Swing bed revenue was $75,600.00, approximately $45,000 less than the revenue collected in January. Total operating revenue for February was approximately $2 million. The hospital paid $943,714.94 in salary and fringe benefits and $20,716.12 in marketing, which includes recruitment. Total operating expenses were approximately $1.9 million, for a profit of around $354,000.00. The hospital currently has 31 days of cash on hand. 340B net revenue for February totaled $47,168. Amber Hogan delivered the Chief Nursing Officer’s report, highlighting efforts to transition Long-Term Care (LTC) to an electronic medication records program and to update or replace LTC’s call light system. The hospital continues to prioritize education and training. Several employment openings remain in the Med/Surg, Emergency, EMS, and LTC departments. There were four new hires and four departures in February. During the Quality Improvement and Risk Management report, Kendra Mobray noted that the hospital’s new website is nearing completion and may be ready within a month. The meeting then entered into executive session before adjourning. The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Salem Memorial Hospital Board of Directors is set for April 28th at 7:00 in the Doctor’s Library and is open to the public.

The Salem Baseball JV Tigers beat Owensville Monday at the SHS Field, 7-4. Salem scored five runs in the 2nd inning helping send them to their first win of the year. Dalton Franklin had a hit and two RBI for Salem while Cody Lundy and Will Thomas each singled and drove in a run. Also getting a hit for Salem was Wyatt Clancy, also singled. Then on Tuesday, the JV Tigers fell to the Licking JV Wildcats, 9-5. Ben Land had two hits and an RBI for Salem, while Clancy and Thomas had RBI singles. The Salem JV is 1-1 and are scheduled to play Potosi today.
The Salem Varsity Baseball Tigers are scheduled to host the Potosi Trojans today at 4:30 at the SHS Baseball Complex. Salem enters the game with a 2-4 record, while Potosi is 5-2.

The St. Louis Cardinals wrapped up their three game series against the New York Mets yesterday afternoon. With just a single run scored by each team in the sixth, extra innings were needed to declare a winner. In the eleventh inning the Cards survived a pair of Mets batters with the bases loaded. Masyn Winn’s pop-up single in the bottom of the inning would allow JJ Wetherholt to score and give St. Louis the 2-1 game and series win. The Cardinals are off today before visiting Detroit to face the Tigers on Friday.
The Los Angeles Kings hosted the St. Louis Blues last night as both teams are on the outside of the NHL playoff picture looking in. Robert Thomas hit a deflected shot in the 3rd to tie up the score and force overtime however it was the King’s Trevor Moore who would score the final goal. With the 2-1 loss the Blues will remain on the road and head for Anaheim on Friday to face the Ducks.

Madison Mercer went 4-4, including a two-run homer, and scored four runs as the Salem Lady Tigers beat the Potosi Lady Trojans Tuesday at the Salem City Park Field, 13-6. Shaylee Thomas had an inside-the-park two-run homer, Alexis White had three hits, and Raven Gillam had two hits and three RBI as the Lady Tigers improve to 4-2 on the year. Salem will open SCA Conference play Thursday against the Ava Lady Bears at the Salem City Park starting at 4:30.
The Salem Baseball Tigers fell to the Licking Wildcats Tuesday night, 6-2 at Licking to fall to 2-4 on the year. Salem will take on the Potosi Trojans Thursday at the Salem High School Baseball Field Complex starting at 4:30.
The Salem Tennis Tigers will face the Potosi Trojans this afternoon at the Salem City Park starting at 4:00.
The Salem Golf Team will participate in the Southern Boone Tournament today.
