Obituaries – Friday, November 19th, 2021
Funeral services for Dallas Truman Hogue formally of Rolla, age 30, will be this afternoon at 1:00 in the Rolla Chapel of the James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be this morning from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Adams Cemetery.
Funeral services for Shirley Louise (Inman) Morton of High Point, Missouri, formerly of Salem, age 87, will be Saturday at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will also be Saturday from 1:00 until service time. Burial will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Second Baptist Church in Salem.
A Celebration of Life for Wilda M. Hoffmann formerly of Rolla, age 92, will be held Saturday afternoon from 1:00 until 3:00 at the Rolla Chapel of the James and Gahr Mortuary.
A Memorial service for Mary Evelyn Clemons of Cape Girardeau, age 90, will be held Sunday afternoon at 1:00 at the First Baptist Church in Van Buren. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
Funeral services for Donald Lue Key, Jr. of Jadwin, age 55, will be held Sunday afternoon at 4:00 in Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 2:00 until service time Sunday.
Funeral services for Ellis Floyd Stewart of Salem, age 73, will be Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be from 10:00 until time of the service. Burial will follow in the Weese Cemetery at a later date.
Funeral services for Erma Lee Abney of Davisville, age 82, will be held Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held Monday evening from 5:00 until 8:00. Interment will be in the Upper Indian Creek Cemetery in Viburnum.
Memorial visitation for Reba Helton, formerly of Salem, age 59, will be held Sunday afternoon, November 28th, from 2:00 until 4:00 in the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Memorial Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society
Memorial services for Harry Cheatham of Salem, age 72, are pending and will be announced at a later date. All the arrangements are under the direction of Wilson Mortuary of Salem.

Registration is going on now for Youth Basketball and Cheerleading at the Salem Community Center@The Armory for those who want to fill out a paper form, or online at the Salem Park and Recreation Facebook page. The programs are open to boys and girls in the 1st through the 6th grade. Registration is $25 for basketball and $35 for cheerleading if you register your child by November 20th. Late registration will be held until November 30th for an additional $10 per child. For more information, call 729-6290.
The Salem Lady Tigers Basketball begin their regular season tonight against Northwest High School starting at 6:00 with the JV game.
The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will be traveling to Dixon High School tonight to face the Bulldogs at 6:00 starting with the JV game. KSMO Media will not be covering the game due to scheduling issues.
Brendon Saad scored two goals and the St. Louis Blues beat San Jose Thursday, 4-1. Robert Thomas and Jordan Kyrou also scored for the Blues who take on the Dallas Stars Saturday night beginning at 6:30 on KSMO.
Kobe Brown scored 13 points as the Missouri Basketball Tigers beat Northern Illinois Thursday, 54-37. They will take on the SMU Sunday evening at 6:30 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.
The Missouri Tigers Football Tigers face Florida in their final regular season home game Saturday at 3:00. Missouri is 5-5 on the year.

The City of Salem is excited to announce it has launched a new text blast service. This service will be used to keep citizens informed on important announcements and updates. Signing up is easy. The Salem Public Library has partnered with Ozark Rivers Solid Wast Management District to collect certain common household batteries for recycling. These types of alkaline batteries may be dropped in the GoRecycle box located the circulation desk. Batteries that will be accepted include D, C, AAA, AA, and 9-volt. The batteries will be recycled into a soil amendment after zinc is extracted from them. The zinc will then be purified and sold to a cosmetic company for use in sunscreen. The Salem Public Library’s involvement in the battery recycling program is strictly as a community service. The library does not receive and financial gain for participation. The library cannot accept Lithium-ion batteries so as those used in cellphones, tablets, or laptops.
The Salem Board of Education will be meeting tonight at 5:00 in closed executive session to discuss personnel before moving into open session at 6:00 in the Salem High School Library. On the consent agenda will be the approval of all previous minutes, approval of bills, and the food service report, followed by the approval of the attendance report, substitution list, and program evaluations. Superintendent Dr. Reed will then give her report to the board followed by principals reports from the Lower Elementary, Upper Elementary, middle school, high school, and the athletic report. New business will include the letting of bids for the gym floor and a consideration of a date for the levy initiative. The board will also consider financing for building projects, set the date for graduation, set the board election filing dates of December 7th through December 28th, and approve SRCSP with no revisions. The open session of the school board meeting tonight is open to the public.
The Dent County Sheriff’s office has released a couple of reports. On Thursday, November 11th, a deputy conducted a traffic stop at Highway 32 East and Route P. As a result of the stop, a 28-year-old Salem woman was arrested for the possession of a controlled substance except for 35 grams of marijuana or synthetic cannabinoid, and the unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. The woman was transported to the Dent County Jail where she was issued a summons, fingerprinted and released. Then on Saturday the 13th, deputies conducted a traffic stop at Dirt Cheap. During the course of the stop, a 37-year-old Salem man was arrested for the unlawful possession of a firearm. The man was transported to the Dent County Jail where he was fingerprinted, issued a summons, and released. An accident happened early Monday morning just after midnight in Phelps County on Route F about two miles east of Highway 72. The report from the highway patrol states that a 2008 Pontiac G6 being driven by 19-year-old Nicholas Taylor of Rolla, was traveling eastbound when he swerved to avoid a deer in the roadway. The Pontiac travelled off the side of the road and struck a tree. Taylor was taken to Phelps Health Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The Pontiac was totaled and removed from the scene by Ron Dishman’s Towing.
An accident happened Tuesday morning around 7:30 in Phelps County on Route J north of Route K. According to the report from the highway patrol, a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer being driven by 26-year-old Miranda Singleton of Beulah, traveled off the left side of the roadway, struck an embankment, and overturned. Singleton, who was not wearing a safety restraint, was flown by Phelps Air to University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia for treatment of Moderate injuries. The Trailblazer was totaled and removed from the scene by a private party.
Preliminary data from the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) has provided harvest numbers for the local area from the opening weekend. In our area, Dent County had 1855 deer checked, Texas harvested 1,814 deer, Crawford County saw 1595 deer taken, 1327 deer were taken in Reynolds County, Texas County had 2382 deer checked and Phelps County saw 1161 deer tagged. The November portion of firearms deer season continues through November 23rd. Missouri’s archery deer and turkey season resumes November 24th through January 15th, 2022. The late youth portion of firearms season runs November 26th through the 28th. The antlerless portion of firearms deer season runs December 4th through the 12th followed by the alternative methods portion December 25th through January 4th. St. Louis Blues lost to the Arizona Coyotes Tuesday night, 3-2. They play tonight at 6:30 against the San Jose Sharks.
The Missouri Tigers will face Northern Illinois tonight at 7:00. The game will not be heard on KSMO due to the Blues’ game. Missouri enters the game with a 1-1 record.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced their coaching staff for the upcoming 2022 season with two new coaches joining their Major League staff and newly-named manager Oli Marmol. New to the team’s coaching staff for 2022 are Bench Coach, and former Cardinals outfielder/infielder Jared “Skip” Schumaker, and Assistant Hitting Coach Turner Ward. Those returning to the team’s Major League coaching staff include Pitching Coach Mike Maddux (5th season with Cardinals), Bullpen Coach Bryan Eversgerd (5th season), Hitting Coach Jeff Albert (3rd season), First Base Coach Stubby Clapp (4th season), Third Base Coach Ron “Pop” Warner (4th season) and Coach Willie McGee (5th season). Also returning for 2022 are Pitching Strategist Dusty Blake (2nd season), Run Production Coach Patrick Elkins (3rd season), Bullpen Catcher/Catching Instructor Jamie Pogue and Bullpen Catcher Kleininger Teran.
Barrett Hayton scored twice to help the Arizona Coyotes earn their second win of the season, 3-2 against the St. Louis Blues at Enterprise Center on Tuesday. The Blues take on the San Jose Sharks Thursday night at 6:30 in a game that can be heard on KSMO.
