Local News – Friday, December 20th, 2019
The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, both District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell and District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson stated that crews would be out sanding and salting county roads, especially on curves and hills and other slick spots that are shaded most of the time. Purcell also said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 6420. Purcell went on to report that he attended the South Central Missouri Community Action Agency meeting in Winona Tuesday where funds are still available for many of their programs. Purcell says funds are still available for home repairs, weatherization, and the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, better known as LIHEAP. All applicants must meet particular income guidelines for each of the programs available. Renters must have owner approval and owner participation to receive services. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wants to remind those who are interested in the Dent County Assessor’s position after Assessor Tina Whitaker retires on December 31st, need to let the Dent County Commission know of your interest. Stop by the regular meetings on Monday or Thursday from 9:00 until 12:00 noon before the end of the year. Three people have already indicated to the commission of their interest in the position. The commissioners will appoint a person to take over the Assessor’s position to start on January 2nd. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said she would be working on the county budget for 2020. The commissioners also approved by a 3-0 vote to renew the county’s liability insurance and auto insurances through MOPERM for the 2020 year. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
The Salem Police Department has released their report for the month of November. They issued four equipment repair orders, 13 summonses to appear in court, six warning tickets, and nine traffic tickets, plus they also served three fugitive warrants. The Salem Police investigated ten traffic accidents, wrote three property damage reports, seven stealing reports, and one trespassing report. The department investigated three reports of driving while having a license revoked or suspended, one driving while being intoxicated, four possession of a controlled substance reports, and five domestic violence reports. The department was also dispatched for 55 animal calls, 30 ambulance assist calls, 30 well being checks, 10 requests for information, and performed 62 traffic stops for the month. The Salem Police Department received 1155 calls during the month of November and had 113 walk-ins to the station. The department drove 7,181 miles during the month and spent 15 hours in court testifying and eight hours as court bailiff. There were 15 males and seven females arrested in November.
An accident happened at 6:30 Wednesday evening in Dent County on Highway 32 about 14 miles east of Salem. The report from the highway patrol states that a 1997 GMC Jimmy being driven by 19-year old Austin Roark of Salem, was eastbound when the GMC traveled off the right side of the road and struck a tree. Roark was transported by a private vehicle to the Salem Memorial District Hospital for the treatment of moderate injuries. According to the report, Roark was not wearing a safety restraint at the time of the accident. The GMC was totaled in the accident and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing.

Visitation will be from 11:00 this morning until service time at the chapel. Interment will be in the Adams Cemetery. Memorials are suggested the First Baptist Church in St. James.
A funeral mass for Karen Diane (Mullen) Cottrell of Steelville, age 78, will be Saturday morning at 11:00 at the St. Michael Catholic Church in Steelville. Visitation will be today from 3:00 until 7:00. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Leasburg. Memorials are suggested to the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Leasburg or to the Steelville Food Pantry. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home.

Danny Foster scored 17 points and Muluken Pritchett added 12 more as the Rolla Bulldogs outscored Salem, 43-21 in the second half en route to a 74-42 win. Reese Dodson led Salem with 17 points as the Tigers fall to 3-4 on the year. The Tigers will be in Cuba Friday night to face the Wildcats starting with the JV game at 6:00 with the varsity game to follow. You can hear the varsity game on KSMO and online at ksmoradio.com
The Salem Lady Tigers defeated Northwest Thursday night in Sullivan, 54-27 in the consolation semi-final game Thursday night. Madison Woolf had 15 points and Bella Jadwin added 14 more in the win as Salem is now 5-2 on the year. The Lady Tigers will face St. James in the Consolation championship game of the Peoples Bank Classic at 5:30 tonight in Sullivan.
The St. Louis Blues, owners of a four-game win streak, will begin a three game West Coast swing starting in San Jose Saturday night at 9:00. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.
The Missouri Tigers will face the Fightin’ Illini Saturday at 11:30 in their annual “Bragging Rights” game at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis. Missouri has won their last two straight games. You can hear the game on KSMO. Missouri is 6-4 on the year.

The City of Salem has been trying to clean off the roads and are running into vehicles parked on the side streets. If possible, please remove your vehicles from the roadway so that the roads can be treated and cleaned properly that will make travel safer for everyone. Also, there are certain streets within the city limits of Salem that have been designated as emergency “Snow Routes.” These streets shall have priority over other streets for the clearing of snow, ice or other debris: Third Street to the west from Highway 19 to Dilworth Lane, and Third Street to the east from Pershing Avenue to Iron Mountain Road; Fourth Street from Pershing Avenue to McArthur Avenue; Sixth Street (Rolla Road) from McArthur Avenue to Pershing Avenue; Jackson Street to the north from Sixth Street (Rolla Road) to the dead end; Tenth Street from Highway 19 to Walnut Hill Drive; Pershing Avenue from Tenth Street to Highway 32/72 East; Center Street from Highway 19 to Craig Industrial Drive; Carty Street from Highway 32/72 East to Center Street; Craig Industrial Drive from Highway 32/72 to Iron Mountain Road; Babb Lane from Highway 32/72 West to Roosevelt Street; Doss Road south from Highway 32/72 East to the city limits; Roosevelt Street to the east from Highway 19 to Babb Lane and west from Highway 19 to Wines Street; Wines Street from Roosevelt Street to Highway 32/72 West; Missouri Avenue from Highway 32/72 West to Third Street; Park Street from Highway 32/72 West to Sixth Street (Rolla Road); Franklin Street to the west from McArthur Avenue to Highway 72 and to the east from Highway 19 to Pershing Avenue; Dilworth Lane from Route J to Highway 32 West; and Center Street to the west from Missouri Avenue to Dilworth Lane. Remember to remove your vehicle from these routes when an accumulation of ice and snow is expected so that the route can be cleared. Your car or truck could be towed at your expense, or you could be sited for a parking violation.
The Dent County Sheriff’s Office has released the following reports for Wednesday, December 11th. First, a deputy conducted a traffic stop in 1700 block of Highway 32 West. During the course of the traffic stop, a 19-year-old Salem man was arrested for possession of marijuana and/or synthetic cannabinoid of 10 grams or less. The man was transported to the Dent County Sheriff’s Office where he was finger-printed, issued a summons and then released. That same day, deputies traveled to the 1200 block of East Third Street to assist the Missouri Department of Social Services – Children’s Division with an investigation. Upon arrival at a residence, deputies arrested a 25-year-old Salem man, a 28-year-old Salem man, and a 23-year old Salem woman for the possession of a controlled substance. Also arrested during the incident was a 43-year-old Salem man for the possession of a controlled substance and keeping or maintaining a public nuisance. A 55-year-old Salem man was arrested for warrants through Dent County for failure to register as a sex offender and a also a Probation and Parole warrant. All of the subjects were transported to the Dent County Sheriff’s Office Jail and incarcerated. Santa’s Workshop will be held Friday at the Salem Community Center@The Armory from 4:30 to 6:30 where children can come and have pictures with Santa Claus, do crafts, enjoy hot chocolate and more. The event is FREE and open to everyone.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will be in Rolla tonight to face the Bulldogs in makeup games from Tuesday night due to the adverse weather. The Freshman game will be in the practice gym starting at 5:30 with the JV game in the main High School Gym also at 5:30. The varsity game will follow the JV game starting about 7:00. The Salem 7th and 8th grade Boys basketball will be at West Plains tonight to play in the games that were postponed Monday starting at 5:30.
The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers lost to Lady Knights of St. Francis Borgia Wednesday night 48-29. The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will face Northwest in the Consolation bracket of the Peoples Bank Classic at 4:00 this afternoon in Sullivan.
Jake Allen stopped 35 of 36 shots and Braden Schenn and Mackenzie MacEachern scored as the St. Louis Blues beat Edmonton Wednesday night, 2-1. The Blues will hit the road for two games as they will be in San Jose Saturday night at 9:00 and Monday night in Los Angeles starting at 8:30. You can hear both games on KSMO Radio.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Office has released the following incident reports. On Monday, December 2nd, deputies responded to the 5000 block of Route H for a report of a burglary. Upon arrival, deputies discovered that a 30-year-old man was the reported victim of the burglary. The investigation is ongoing. On Wednesday, December 4th, deputies traveled to a residence in the 1400 block of South Washington Street in an attempt to serve an arrest warrant through Dent County. During the course of the incident, a 57-year-old Salem man was arrested and transported to the Dent County Sheriff’s Office Jail where he was incarcerated. That same day a deputy conducted a traffic stop near the Highway 19 and Highway 32 intersection. During the course of the traffic stop, a 25-year-old Rolla woman was arrested for having an active warrant through Boone County. The woman was transported to the Dent County Sheriff’s Office where she later posted bond. The next day, Thursday December 5th, deputies responded to the 3000 block of Route W for the report of a burglary. Upon arrival, deputies discovered that a Salem woman was the reported victim of the burglary. The investigation is ongoing. Finally on Sunday, December 8th, deputies traveled to Forest Service Road 2748 to assist the Conservation and Forest Service with a possible burglary. Deputies arrived and during the course of the investigation they discovered that a 64-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman were the reported victims of the burglary. Suspect information was obtained from the couple and the investigation is ongoing. Salem Chamber of Commerce has announced the Christmas Parade winners. First place commercial exhibit went to The Bank of Salem while the first place non- commercial was won by Salem Church of Christ. Grace Manes took 1st place horsemanship honors. Thank you to everyone who participated for the many wonderful entries. The Chamber has received positive comments all week on the success of the parade. Well done Salem!
The Dent County Service Unit of the Salvation Army wants to thank the citizens of Dent County for adopting all the “angels” from the “Angel Tree” at Wal-Mart this year. These unselfish gestures are what make Dent County so special when it comes to caring for our neighbors.
The Salem Police Department has released the following reports. On Wednesday morning, December 4th, at approximately 8:15, the School Resource Officer was advised that a 15- year-old juvenile female of Salem was in possession of a vape device at school. The investigation of the report led to the detention of the juvenile suspect for possessing a vape device. The juvenile was released to a parent.The report will be forwarded to the Juvenile Office. The next day, Thursday December 5th, at approximately 1:45, the School Resource Officer was advised a student was in possession of a vape device at school. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 17-year-old male of Salem for possession of a vape device under the age of 18. The suspect was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Finally on Sunday afternoon, December 8th, at approximately 2:14 an officer located a 30 year-old male of Salem near Washington and Franklin who had an active arrest warrant from Missouri State Probation and Parole. The suspect was taken into custody on the warrant and incarcerated pending extradition. The Salem Public Library offer “Books on the Run.” This is a delivery and pickup service for homebound residents of Salem as well as local
nursing homes and care facilities. This free program has been a successful partnership between Salem Public Library and Enrichment Services of Dent County for over 20 years! “Books on the Run” conveniently picks up previously checked out materials and delivers new materials on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month.
