On Friday, September 15th at approximately 10:00 at night, the officers of the Salem Police Department were investigating an incident of property damage that occurred at the Salem City Park on September 8th. During the investigation, the officers learned of two suspects that possibly had involvement in the damage. On Saturday, September 16th, further investigation led to the arrest of a 22-year old male of Licking and a 17-year old male of Salem for causing the damage that had been reported. The two suspects were issued City of Salem summonses to appear in court on November 9th and were released. The Dent County Commissioners met Monday morning at the courthouse for their regular meeting. The District 2 Road Supervisor sat in for Commission Larson who was unable to attend. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported materials would be added and grading done on Dent County Road 5650 which is also known as the Lake Road, while brush will be cut on county road 5130. Purcell went on to say that Ultimate Pavement Material would be used to repair potholes and edging on chip and seal county roads 2400, 6180, 6300 and 6380. Sam Gorman gave the road report for District 2 and said a pipe was going to be put in on Dent County Roads 3330 and 4060, and materials would be hauled to those roads. He also said materials would be added to Dent County Roads 2120 and 3220, and brush was going to be cut on Dent County Road 2550. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported on the External Relations Committee meeting from the MRPC and said invitations and notifications for the MRPC Annual Dinner on October 26th at the Salem Community Center@The Armory were going out in the mail. He went onto report they reviewed the State Legislative priorities they would like to see addressed and sent that out to the MRPC members for their feedback. Skiles said at the regular MRPC meeting that Janie Dunning acting as a consultant for the Missouri Farm Bureau is working with the Missouri Broadband Initiative in trying to meet the challenges of providing broadband Internet access into rural areas. Dunning says their statistics show that 69% of Missouri rural areas do not have broadband and for rural America, that number is 39%. He also said that he recommended the appointment of Gary Brown as an At-Large MRPC Board Member representing for-profit businesses and that was approved. Skiles went on to report that he spoke with CenturyLink representative Lynne Zinsser about the problems at the courthouse with their long distance services. Zinsser asked the county to appoint one person as their contact person and the commission appointed Dent County Clerk Angie Curley as that representative. Skiles said he would be at the MRPC today to review Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District Recycling Grant applications. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley is reminding everyone that if you have NOT received your voter registration card in the mail to please call her office at 729-4144. She said the county has received a number of the voter registration cards back because addresses have changed and you will have to have a good address before elections in 2018. Prosecuting Attorney Andrew Curley brought in the contract for the county purchase of the White property across Rolla Road from the future location of the jail and justice center. The commission approved signing the paperwork and proceeding with the closing. The next meeting of the commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open the public.
The Salem Memorial Hospital Board of Directors will hold their regular board meeting tonight at 6:00 at the hospital library. In the administrator’s report, the board will receive information on the summary of operations for the month of August followed by the Chief of Nursing report. There will also be a report on the Hospital Foundation followed by the auxiliary report. In old business, the board will discuss the Annual Bylaw Review before discussing purchases for the hospital in New Business. The board may then vote to go into closed session. The regular board meeting of the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors will be tonight starting at 6:00 at the hospital library and the meeting is open to the public.
An accident happened at 2:35 Saturday morning in Crawford County about six miles north of Viburnum on Highway 49. According to the highway patrol report, a 2009 Chevy Pickup driven by 21-year old Bryan Black of Cherryville, ran off the left side of the roadway. The Chevy overturned and struck a fence before overturning again. Black suffered minor injuries and was transported by the Iron County EMS to the Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan. Black was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevy was totaled and removed from the scene by Whipperwill Recycling of Davisville.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers three game winning streak came to an end at the hands of Dixon as they were shutout by the score of 3-0. Salem could only muster four hits in the game while striking out 15 times. The Lady Tigers fall to 11-5 on the year and they will host the Willow Springs Lady Bears at 4:30 in the final home game of the season. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio and on ksmoradio.com.
The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers fell to St. Clair Monday night in two straight games: 25-12 and 25-14. The Salem varsity is now 5-8-1 on the year. The JV also lost in two straight games: 25-17 and 25-16. The Lady Tigers will be at Mountain Grove tonight starting at 6:00 with the JV contest in SCA Conference play.
The St. Louis Cardinals open up a three game set with the Cincinnati Reds tonight in the Queen City. You can hear the game on KSMO immediately after Salem Lady Tigers Softball.
The Kansas City Royals will be at Toronto to start a three game series starting tonight.

Funeral services for Sam Purcell of Salem, age 89, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Salem Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be held today from 5:00 to 8:00 PM with a Masonic Service at 7:00 followed by an Eastern Star Service. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salem United Methodist Church.
Funeral services for Roger Dale Gibbs of Salem, age 57, will be Friday at 1:00 at the Salem Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 at the Chapel. Interment will be in the Tune Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Salem Care Center.
A Celebration of Life Service for Ralph Kirkman of Licking, age 99, will be Monday at 11:00 in the morning at First Baptist Church of Licking. A gathering of friends and family will be held Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Fox Chapel. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Fox Funeral Home in Licking.

An accident happened Saturday morning at 11:00 in Washington County on Route A just east of Route T. According to the highway patrol report, 18-year old Austin Poulson of Rolla was driving a 2003 Hyundai Tiburon eastbound when he lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a sharp curve. The Hyundai traveled off the right side of the roads edge and struck a tree. Poulson suffered serious injuries and was transported to the St. Anthony’s Medical Center by the Washington County Ambulance District. Poulson was not wearing a seat restraint and the Hyundai was totaled in the accident. The vehicle was removed from the scene by Elliott’s Towing.
An accident happened at 6:15 Friday morning in Dent County five and a half miles south of Salem on Highway 19. According to the highway patrol report, a southbound 2005 Ford F-150, driven by 29-year old Steven Cahill of Salem, ran off the right side of the roadway. Cahill overcorrected and the truck ran off the left side of the road. The Ford began to overturn when it impacted a fence and came to rest. A passenger, 26-year old Adrian Stacy of Salem, suffered minor injuries and sought his own treatment. According to the report, both occupants were wearing safety restraints. The F-150 was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitakers Towing.
An accident happened Friday afternoon at 1:57 in Phelps County on Route O about a mile south of Rolla. According to the highway patrol report, a 2005 Chevy Blazer driven southbound by 21-yearold Damian Reeves of Rolla, turned into the path of a northbound 2008 Chevy Malibu driven by 20-yaer old Caleb McKinney of Rolla. Damian Reeves suffered moderate injuries in the accident as did 20-year old Anne Menge of Rolla who was a passenger in the Malibu. Suffering minor injuries were the driver of the Malibu, Caleb McKinney and passengers from the Malibu: 17-year old Kayla Wainwright of Rolla and 17-year old Rowena Wallace of Rolla. Reeves, McKinney and Menge were transported by the Phelps County EMS to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center while Wainwright and Wallace were taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by the St. James EMS. The Blazer was totaled in the accident and was removed by Dishman’s Towing of Rolla, while the Malibu had extensive damage and was removed from the scene by C&C Towing of Rolla.
The City of Salem Board of Aldermen will be meeting this evening at the City Hall Council Chambers for the regular meeting starting at 7:00. After the consent agenda, the board will hear from City Administrator Ray Walden about events going on in the city followed by Mayor Brad Nash and his report. In the Introduction and Reading of Bills, Bill #3342 would create an ordinance that would establish the date to initiate the solid waste charges to residential customers under the new contract with WCA Waste Corporation. Mayor Nash will present to the board his recommendation of Gary Brown to replace James Coffman on the Salem Housing Authority Board who has resigned. Brown said he would be honored to accept the position. The Fall-Clean-Up Week will be set for the week of October 9th through the 13th for city WCA customers. The board will go into closed session to discuss real estate before adjourning. The City of Salem Board of Aldermen meeting will be held tonight at 7:00 in the city hall council chambers and the meeting is open to the public.

The Ava Football Bears held Salem to a total of 96 yards in offense and shut out the Tigers by the final score of 45-0. It was the second straight game Salem has been shutout and they have not scored in the last nine quarters of football going back to the 3rd quarter against Houston. Caleb Johnson threw three touchdown passes to Michael Lane and Stephan Copeland ran for 153 yards and two touchdowns for Ava. Salem is now 2-3 on the year and 1-2 in the SCA. They will be home for their Homecoming game this Friday night against Willow Springs.
The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will be at St. Clair tonight to face the Lady Bulldogs. Salem varsity enters the game with a 5-7-1 record. The JV will start play at 6:00 with the varsity games to follow.
The Salem Lady Softball Tigers beat Waynesville Friday afternoon in Waynesville in a “slugfest” as Salem banged out 15 hits with Trista Heavin, Rebekah Kirker, Alexus Woolman and Taylor Bradshaw each having three hits. Nina Howard had two hits for Salem while Waynesville had 12 hits of their own. Heavin and Woolman had home runs in the game but Waynesville also cracked two homers in the contest. Salem is now 11-4 on the year and they will host Dixon today at 4:30 at the Salem City Park.
Signups for the City of Salem Adult Co-Ed Volleyball League for men and women age 18 and over is going on now through October 3rd. Registration is per team with a minimum of three men and three women for $150. You can pickup and return your forms at the Salem Community Center@The Armory at 1200 West Rolla Road. Games will be held every Sunday starting October 15th at the Upper Elementary Gymnasium. Purdue quarterback David Blough completed 22 of 28 pass attempts for 187 yards and a touchdown, and backup Elijah Sindelar added 85 yards and a touchdown on 4-of-6 passing, as the Boilermakers pounded Missouri on Saturday, 35-3. The Tigers offense managed only 203 yards in falling to 1-2 on the year. Missouri will host Auburn this Saturday at Faurot Field in the 4th straight home game to start the season.
Jason Heyward hit a go-ahead single with two outs in the seventh to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 4-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday afternoon to complete the three game series sweep for Chicago and dampen the playoff hopes for the Cardinals. Tyler Lyons took the loss for the Cardinals and drops to 4-1 on the year. Dexter Fowler’s three-run homer tied the game for St. Louis in the 6th inning as they fall six games behind the Cubs in the Central Division Race. The Cards are off today before going to Cincinnati on Tuesday.
Corey Kluber pitched seven scoreless innings and Edwin Encarnacion belted his 36th home run as the Cleveland Indians defeated the Kansas City Royals 3-2 on Sunday at Progressive Field. Royals’ starter Danny Duffy (8-9) took the loss, although he pitched well. Duffy allowed one earned run on one hit in five innings, with eight strikeouts and no walks. Kansas City will be off today.
Two second-half touchdowns from running back Kareem Hunt helped the Chiefs pull away with a 27-20 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs finished with six sacks, including three by defensive lineman Chris Jones who also had an interception on the day. The Chiefs are 2-0 on the young season and they will be in Los Angeles next week to face the Chargers.

Salem Chief of Police Keith Steelman is asking for the public's help in finding the person or persons who committed the vandalism at the Salem City Park. You may be eligible for a reward if you can provide information that would lead to an arrest in the case and all information you provide would be kept confidential. You can call the We Tip Hotline at 1-800-782-7463. Someone knows who did this damage to the City Park, so please come forward. Please pass this message to everyone.
The Dent County Commissioners met Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. At the meeting, Randy League from the Midwest Blue Oval Club presented the commissioners with a plaque thanking them for allowing the club to use the courthouse lawn for the car show held this past weekend that was very successful. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5380 and 5880 while materials would be added and grading done on county road 4210. He went on to say workers would be cutting brush on Dent County Road 6190. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said grading would be done on Dent County Road 5280 while brush would be cut on county road 2450. He indicated workers would be installing a pipe on county road 3220 and would be hauling materials to repair the road after the installation. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles presided over a PHA hearing on Thursday and also attended the External Relations Committee meeting at the MRPC in St. James as well as attended their regular monthly meeting. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said she balanced with the collector and assessor on all collections, abatements and add-ons for the month of August. She said there are still a couple of county offices that are having some long-distance issues with CenturyLink, but they are now dealing directly with them in trying to get those issues corrected. The Commission approved adding a policy amendment to their employee handbook for CERF medical leave. This amendment needed to be made so that employees could be eligible for a $10,000 death benefit through the County Employee’s Retirement Fund if they passed away while on certified medical leave. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and that meeting is open to the public.
Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) now offers an all-online hunter-education course for Missouri residents 16 years or older to provide a more flexible and convenient option to become hunter-education certified. The all-online course includes videos and animation to teach hunter safety, firearm safety, ethics, regulations, and wildlife management. Students will receive a temporary hunter-education certificate once they complete and pass the 60-question final exam with an 80% or higher. Individuals 15 years or younger are still required to complete the blended hunter education course requiring both a knowledge portion and in-person skills session to receive certification. The only Hunter Education Skills Session on the MDC website for this area will be in Bunker at the Bunker High School on Eagle Pride Drive onSaturday, October 14th starting at 8:00. Students should be sure to bring either a completed workbook or a copy of the certificate verifying the completion of the online portion. Also there is a minimum of 9 students required to have the class. If this minimum is not met the class will be cancelled. Currently, there are 42 seats remaining in the class. Missouri’s hunter education course is required for any hunter born on or after January 1, 1967. Hunters who plan to hunt during a Missouri firearms season or are acting as an adult mentor must first complete an approved hunter-education certification program and provide proof of completion unless: 15 years of age or younger and will be hunting with a properly permitted adult mentor 18 or older; born before January 1, 1967. Disability exemption from MDC’s Protection Division for 16 years of age or older and have purchased an apprentice hunter authorization and will be hunting with a property permitted adult mentor 18 or older.
