The Salem Cross Country Tigers will be at St. James today at 4:00 at the St. James High School.

Keeping their slim wild-card hopes intact while preventing the Chicago Cubs from clinching their second straight National League Central title, the St. Louis Cardinals hung on for an 8-7 win Tuesday night at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals got home runs from Matt Carpenter, Randall Grichuk, Jedd Gyorko and Tommy Pham. St. Louis remained 2 1/2 games behind Colorado for the NL’s second wild-card spot. The Cards and Cubs will play again tonight at 5:10 on KSMO Radio.

Jason Vargas claimed his 18th victory, and Whit Merrifield scored a run and drove in a run as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Detroit Tigers 2-1 on Tuesday night. Vargas (18-10) gave up one run on five hits over six innings, throwing 54 strikes in 82 pitches. He walked one and struck out three. The Detroit Tigers will be in Kansas City tonight.
