It was a memorable weekend for the Salem Marching Blue. Saturday in Branson, they took first place in their class and swept all the captions that included Color Guard, Percussion, Visual, General Effect, Winds & Drum Major. In the finals, they took 8th place out of 14 schools and scored 80.9 points! At the Ozark Mountain Marching Festival in Reeds Springs also on Saturday, Salem took 2nd place in their class and took the Percussion Caption. In that final, Salem took 5th out of 14 schools! Salem was also presented the Espirit De Corps award for having the best sportsmanship in Reeds Springs! Congratulations Marching Blue on a great weekend!!

An accident happened Thursday afternoon at 4:17 in Dent County on Dent County Road 4110 about five miles north of Salem that left a man from Salem with serious injuries. According to the highway patrol report, a 2006 Chevy Trailblazer drive westbound by 37-year old Jeremy Harris of Salem, traveled off the right side of the roadway. Harris overcorrected and the Trailblazer went off the left side of the roadway striking utility pole and overturned. Harris was ejected through the driver’s side window and suffered serious injuries. He was taken by a private vehicle to the Salem Memorial District Hospital and then flown to the Mercy Hospital in Springfield by the Phelps Air Ambulance. The Chevy Trailblazer was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitakers Towing.

The City of Salem announced that a City of Salem Planning and Zoning Commission public hearing and meeting will be held tonight at 6:30 to discuss rezoning the property at 701 South Main from being zoned Commercial to Manufacturing or Industrial owned by Gary Fiebelman for a pipe company. The public hearing and meeting are open to the public. Following the Planning and Zoning Commission hearing and meeting, the Board of Aldermen will hold their regular meeting. The board will heard bids for a regulator for the airport lighting. The board will hear a public hearing report from the hearing that was held the prior to the alderman meeting before approving the consent agenda. Gary Brown from the Planning and Zoning Commission will give a report on the meeting of the Commission to discuss the rezoning of the property at 701 South Main. City Administrator Ray Walden will give his report that will feature a CDL differential as well as engineering and surveying for sidewalks and a lighting project. Acting Mayor Haydn Powell, Jr. will give his report followed by the introduction and the reading of bill #3345 that would create an ordinance authorizing the Mayor to sign and execute task order #10 pertaining to an agreement between the City of Salem and CM Archer Group P.C. dated August 4th, 2014 to perform services for the project named “Downtown Streetscape.” In new business, the board will approve invoices over $3,000 before going into closed session to discuss real estate. The regular meeting of the Salem Board of Aldermen will be tonight at 7:00 at the City Hall Council Chambers and the meeting is open to the public.

The Community Blood Center of the Ozarks reminds everyone there will be a blood drive in Salem at the Salem Memorial District Hospital on Friday, October 20th from 9:00 in the morning until 2:00 in the afternoon.
