An accident happened in Phelps County Sunday morning at 8:30 on Highway 63 about a mile south of Rolla that took the life of a man from Rolla. According to the highway patrol report, a 2003 Ford Ranger driven southbound by 55-year old Karl Gabel of Rolla, traveled across the centerline and went off the left side of the roadway where the Ford struck a private drive, impacting a fence and a tree. Gabel was transported by the EMS to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead by Dr. Abusbeth at 9:51. The Ford Ranger was totaled in the accident and removed from the scene by C&C Towing of Rolla. It was unknown if Gabel was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident.

An accident happened in Franklin County Friday night at 11:00 on Iron Hill Road south of Snowdrift Lane. According to the highway patrol report, a 1996 Dodge Dakota driven southbound by 23-year old Jacob Christenson of Steelville, was traveling too fast for a curve in the roadway and the Dakota went off the left side of the roadway. Christenson suffered moderate injuries and was taken by the St. Clair Ambulance to the Mercy Hospital in Washington, Mo. The Dodge Dakota was totaled in the accident and was removed from the scene by Vogelsangs Towing. Christenson was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident.

Congratulations to Jodie Dean, Dalton Sanders, and Braylin Shelton for placing 1st in the South Central District FFA Fall Speaking contests last night. Jodie took First in the Missouri Quarter Horse Association speech, Dalton was First in the Missouri Teach Ag speech and Braylin Shelton captured First in the Missouri Young Farmer / Young Farm Wives speech. They will be competing in the State competition at the organizations state conferences in December and January.

According to Patricia Hall, the Medical Center Director of the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center in Poplar Bluff, the Salem VA Clinic on the campus of the Salem Memorial District Hospital will continue to be open while they are recruiting for new provider as Dr. Harness has decided to leave. The clinic is currently being staffed by Dr. Bhatt, Dr. Dumontier and Nurse Practitioner Ms. Pearson. The physicians and nurse practitioner will be available Wednesday, Thursdays and Fridays at the clinic. Patients can get administrative assistance Monday through Friday. The City of Salem will hold a public workshop over proposed changes to the city sidewalks tonight at 6:00 in the evening at the Salem Community Center@ The Armory. The workshop will cover topics such as a review of the recent sidewalk audit, the TAP grant sidewalk project, the downtown streetscape project as well as a discussion of other sidewalk issues. The workshop will identify the next steps including potential tasks for inclusion in the 2018-19 proposed capital improvement budget. This workshop is open to the public.
