The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their regular meeting this evening at the City Hall Council Chambers located 202 North Washington beginning at 7:00 pm. At a previous meeting in unfinished business, the Board approved a $100 fee if alcohol is to be used during an event at the Salem City Hall Auditorium and the Salem Community Center@The Armory as there were some questions concerning the rental regulations for the buildings. The Salem Community Center @The Armory, who has their own lease agreement, has now been removed form Bill #3320, which includes the fees and regulations concerning the rental of the Old City Hall Building and Auditorium. The bill will be presented to the Board for their approval as this also amends several previous codes. City Administrator Ray Walden will update the Board on various current and future projects followed by a report by Mayor Brad Nash. During the introduction and reading of bills and resolutions, Bill #3326 is an ordinance authorizing filing of applications with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission by the Missouri Joint Municipal Electric Utility Commission (MJMEUC) on behalf of the City of Salem, a member of MJMEUC. In new and miscellaneous business, several years ago the Board voted that the City Clerk could approve liquor licenses without having to go to the Board for approval. City Clerk Mary Happel has found a couple of places in the Code Book that states that the Board must approve these licenses. She is asking for direction from the Board as to how they would like this matter handled in the future and an ordinance would be required to change the Code Book. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open the public.

Missouri landowners and renters can learn about the state’s fencing and boundary laws at sessions offered by University of Missouri Extension. Under a new state law that went into effect last October, livestock owners would not be liable for damage caused by livestock unless found negligent in fencing practices. MU Extension agricultural business specialist Joe Koenen will teach a class on fencing law 6:30 to 9:00 PM tomorrow. in Steelville at the Steelville Telephone Exchange at 61 East Highway 8th. Missouri’s fencing laws are complex, according to Koenen who says Missouri is unique because they have a general fence law and 19 counties have a local fence law. Koenen says it is important for each property owners and renters to understand the unique standards of each. Koenen and other MU Extension specialists will offer insight into fence maintenance for row crop and livestock owners, renters and small-acreage owners to understand their legal and financial responsibilities. The Skype sessions offer participants time for an interactive question-and-answer period. To register for the class or for more information, contact Joe Koenen at 660-947-2705 or koenenj@missouri.edu.
